The Mass of Christian Burial for Gert will be at 1:00 pm on Monday, November 4, 2024, at Church of the Resurrection with Father Phil Gibbs as the Celebrant. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery, Dubuque.
Gertrude was born on April 9, 1937, in Dubuque, IA, the daughter of John “Jack” and Cecilia (Irmen) Kass. She graduated from St. Columbkille in 1955. On September 14, 1957, she married the love of her life, Clarence “Buddy” Dietz, in Dubuque. He preceded her in death on August 9, 2024.
Gert worked as an administrative assistant for Dunn & Bradstreet until the kids were born and then she farmed alongside Bud and took care of the pigs in the farrowing house and the nursery.
Gert was a faithful member of the Church of the Resurrection where she was involved in several capacities, such as, helping with funeral luncheons, Rosary Society, and prayer group, just to name a few. She was very generous with her time and loved helping wherever and whenever she could. She also helped plan her high school class reunions.
Gert was not one to be able to sit still, if by chance she was sitting, she was either sewing or scrap booking. She made many bridesmaid dresses, snowmobile suits, among many other alterations for others. She was also an avid gardener and fantastic baker and loved sharing her baked goods with others. Some of her favorite nights were spent playing poker with the card club ladies, or teaching a card game to her grandchildren. She enjoyed spending weekends at the cabin in Buenie and fishing on the Mississippi. Winters were spent in Mission, Texas enjoying the warm weather. She was also proud to have started golfing at the age of 68 and getting a hole in 1! Family was of utmost importance to her, she and Bud loved spending time together. Bud was truly the love of her life, they had a relationship to look up to and an unbreakable bond, this was made even more apparent with Gert passing just 80 days after Bud. They are dancing together again.
Survivors include her four children, Larry (Diane) Dietz of Dubuque; Cheryl (Jeff) Schueller of Dryden, MI; Sandra (Rusty) Bahl of Sherrill; and Susan Heacock of Farley; ten grandchildren, Clint (Kelly) Dietz, Brooke (Aaron) Horkheimer, Clayton (Becky Kluesner) Dietz, Jon (Angela Winer) Dietz, Kristen Dietz, Tanner Bahl, Mataya Bahl, Dylan Heacock, Samantha Heacock, and Dawson (Kaylee Schueller) Heacock; nine great-grandchildren, Owen, Wyatt, Ava, Kaitlyn, Carter, Kayden, Joseph, Josie, and McKinley; one brother, Nick (Al) Kass of Dubuque; and one brother-in-law, Bill Tigges.
Besides her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by two sons, Gary in infancy, and Jerry “Pudge” in 1997; and five siblings, Betty Kass, John (Jean) Kass, Juanita Tigges, Jim Kass, and Mary Kass.
