Harold D. Shaffer
Harold D. Shaffer, age 70, of Dubuque, passed away at 1:17 p.m., on Monday, February 12, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics.
To honor Harold’s life, family and friends may visit from 2:00 p.m. until 5:45 p.m., on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street. Funeral services will be held at 6:00 p.m., on Wednesday at Behr Funeral Home, with Deacon David Roth officiating.
Harold was born on May 6, 1953, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of William and Edna (Maas) Shaffer.
Harold attended Sacred Heart Grade School and Jefferson Middle School. He was a hard worker and worked in construction until his well earned retirement. He married Suzanne Minnick on April 6, 1974. They would have celebrated their 50th anniversary in a couple months. In his free time Harold enjoyed working outside in his garden and canning his harvest to share with family and friends. He was a self proclaimed “River Rat” who loved boating and fishing on the Mississippi. He also enjoyed camping trips with his family and traveling to Florida. Harold was a good man and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish Harold’s memory include: his wife, Sue Shaffer, Dubuque, IA; his children, Kevin (Shay Helgens) Shaffer, Dubuque, IA, Scott (Jodi) Shaffer, Dunedin, FL, Christopher (Megan Jaeger) Shaffer, Cuba City, WI and Kimberly (Chad) Schroeder, Dubuque, IA; 14 grandchildren, Alexis, Jordan, Hailey, Benjamin, Isabelle, Jasslee, Jasmine, Lilly, Addison, Piper, Parker, Kylie (Leonard Collins), Caleb (Victoria Dieter) and Ashlynn; his great-grandchildren, River and Tatum; a sister-in-law, Rose Shaffer, Dubuque, IA; and in-laws whom he loved dearly, Chuck and Becky, Terry and Candie, Sharon and Tom and Lisa and Joey.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Justin Shaffer; and his siblings, Alice, Irvin, Donald, John “Jack”, Rita, Mary, Lorraine, Leonard, Richard “Dick” , Clarence, William, Shirley and Jim.
Harold’s family would like to thank everyone at UnityPoint Health Finley Hospital and the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics for their professional and compassionate care of Harold and the entire family.
