James R. Spoden

James R. Spoden, 73, of Dyersville and formerly of Worthington, passed away Monday, August 27, 2018, at Finley Hospital in Dubuque surrounded by his family.

Visitation will be held from 3 – 8 pm Friday, August 31, 2018, at Kramer Funeral Home, 750 12th Ave SW in Dyersville. Visitation will continue Saturday from 9 – 10 am at Kramer Funeral Home prior to funeral services. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am. Saturday, September 1, 2018, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville. Rev. Dennis Quint will officiate.

Jim was born December 9, 1944, in Dubuque the son of Peter and Clara (Naumann) Spoden. He graduated from Senior High School where he played basketball. He married Mary L. Hess on February 27, 1965, in Worthington, Iowa. Jim was a CNC Operator at John Deere Dubuque Works for 38 ½ years.

He enjoyed traveling to watch his grandchildren’s activities, camping, golfing and generally having a great time.

Survivors include his wife of 53 ½ years, Mary; two sons: Steve (Ann) Spoden and Scott (Lisa) Spoden, both of Crystal Lake, IL; 5 grandchildren: Tanner, Maxwell, Haley, Maddie and Carter Spoden; siblings: Diane (Jerry) Ball of Florida and Sally Reardon of Dubuque; in-laws: Susan Pomerantz of Clive, IA, Ed (Vanetta) Hess of Worthington and Judy (Virgil) Johnson of Avondale, Ariz., and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his parents-in-law, Ambrose and Kay Hess, an infant son, and a brother, Peter Spoden.
