Jan Helwig-Schrobilgen

Jan Helwig-Schrobilgen, 80, of Dubuque, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at the Hawkeye Care Center in Dubuque surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with glioblastoma.

Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm Wednesday, October 29, 2025 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory in Dubuque.

The Funeral Service for Jan will be 10:00 am Thursday, October 30, 2025, at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Dubuque, with Pastor Karla Wildberger officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery in Dubuque.

Jan was born April 13, 1945, in Monroe, WI, the daughter of Walter and Mildred Golackson Meier. Jan was a devoted and loving wife, mother, sister, and friend whose kindness and selflessness touched many lives. She was a 1962 graduate of South Wayne High School.

She was first married to Gerald Lehnherr, with whom she shared 28 years of marriage and three children. Though they later divorced, they remained connected through their family. She later married Harold Helwig and, after his passing in 2007, Dennis House until his death in 2018. On March 21, 2020, she married Dale Schrobilgen, with whom she shared love, laughter, and companionship.

She worked and retired from Thrivent Financial, where she worked for twenty-four years. Before that she held several jobs, including Woldenberg’s retail.

Jan enjoyed reading, tending her garden, traveling, and spending time with her family. She was a volunteer for Open Closet and was a member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church.  She was active in her church as a greeter and served on committees such as the senior group and prayer chain. She was a true warrior, having bravely battled breast cancer twice before facing glioblastoma over the past year and a half. Through every challenge, she met life with courage, faith, and grace. She cherished time with her family and friends, creating wonderful memories together.

Survivors include her husband, Dale; two sons, Tom (Sue) Lehnherr of Blanchardville, WI, and Brian (Diane) Lehnherr of Belmont, WI; one daughter, Kathy (David Jones) Lehnherr of Wales, WI; five grandchildren, Mandi (Nick Tringali) Lehnherr, Danielle (Robert) D’Amato, Josh Schmitter, Kamryn Schmitter, and Cole (Katie) Lehnherr; three great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Thea, and Frankie; one brother, Jim (Connie) Meier of South Wayne, WI; several step-children and step-grandchildren, whom she loved very much; and many nieces and nephews who held a special place in her heart.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Gerald Meier and Gene Golackson, and her previous husbands, Gerald Lehnherr, Harold Helwig, and Dennis House.

A memorial has been established for Lord of Life Lutheran Church.

Jan’s family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Pastor Karla and Jan’s church family, the staff at Hawkeye Care Center, Hospice of Dubuque, Dr. Howard and the Oncology team at UW Hospital in Madison for their exceptional care, compassion, and support.
