Janice M. Baresel

Janice M. Baresel, 87, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, April 3, 2025, at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus, in Davenport, Iowa.

Janice Marie Ostert was born on April 7, 1937 in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Henry R. and Maudie M. (Ralston) Ostert.  Her early education took place in Monmouth schools before her family moved to Andrew, where she graduated from Andrew High School. It was in Maquoketa that Janice married the love of her life, William E. “Bill” Baresel, on July 14, 1957. Together, they welcomed four children into the world: Jerry, Pam, Brenda, and Jodi.

Before settling into her role as a devoted wife and mother, Janice worked at the local dime store in downtown Maquoketa. She also worked alongside her husband Bill at Hoffman Eggs and Clinton Engines, both in Maquoketa.

Janice’s interests were as grounded and nurturing as her personality. She found solace and joy in the great outdoors, whether she was fishing, camping, gardening, or mushrooming. These activities not only brought Janice peace but also provided cherished memories with her family and friends.

Those left to honor her memory include her children, Jerry (and fiancé Lori Palmer) Baresel of Andrew, IA, Pam Burckart of Maquoketa, IA, and Brenda (Ken) Tranel of Cuba City, WI; a son-in-law, Rodney Dodds of Spragueville, IA; 6 grandchildren, Crystal, Cayla, Chad, Brandon, Alisha and Andrew; 2 great-grandchildren, Claire and Camden; a sister Phyllis Brinker of Maquoketa, IA; sisters-in-law, Joan Ostert of Maquoketa, IA, and Zulma “Sue” Ostert of Maquoketa, IA; and a brother-in-law, Jim Baresel of Camanche, IA.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband William “Bill” on November 10, 2022, daughter Jodi Dodds, brothers Dwayne, Darrell and Charlie Ostert, and a son-in-law Bruce Heuer.

A celebration of her life will be held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, April 10, 2025, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.  Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 P.M., Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.  Burial will be at the Bridgeport Cemetery, rural Maquoketa, Iowa.
