Jean Buchner

Jean Buchner, a creative and generous soul, passed away on June 4, 2023, in Maquoketa, Iowa. Born on November 30, 1919, in Paw Paw, Michigan, Jean lived a life full of love, art, and adventure.

Jean grew up in Paw Paw, Michigan, and graduated high school there. She then attended and graduated from Stephen’s College in Colombia, Missouri, where she studied art. Her passion for art led her to further her education at the University of Iowa, where she met her future husband, James Carson Buchner. They were married on December 28, 1941, in Paw Paw, Michigan, and were blessed with two children, Lee and Jay.

Throughout her life, Jean was a dedicated housewife and mother. She was also a renowned local artist who generously donated her artwork to various people, charities, and causes. Among the many recipients of her talent were the Jackson County Historical Society and the Peace Pipe Players in Maquoketa, where she devoted much of her time and skills to building sets and painting artwork scenery for numerous plays.

In addition to her artistic talents, Jean was an avid fisherman and hunter, known for her spectacular gardens. Her love for the outdoors and natural beauty was evident in her artwork, which often depicted scenes of nature and wildlife.

Jean is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jay and Kathy Buchner of Jackson, WY; two grandchildren, Ben Buchner, and Chani and her husband Joe Knobe, and their two children, Piper and Jack.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Mary Janette Gilkey Stewart, and a son Lee Buchner.

As we remember Jean Buchner, we celebrate her creativity, generosity, and the positive impact she had on those around her. Her legacy will live on through her family, her artwork, and her contributions to the community.
