John F. Cahill

John F. “Jack” Cahill, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at his home in Delmar, Iowa, on April 14, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on December 19, 1935, in DeWitt, Iowa, Jack was the son of Frank J. and Frieda Dora (Brockmiller) Cahill.

Jack grew up in the close-knit community of DeWitt and graduated from Calamus High School. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, receiving an honorable discharge for his dedication and service. On May 11, 1957, Jack married the love of his life, Patricia Ann Kaczinski, in Grand Mound, Iowa. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter, welcoming seven children into the world: Brenda, Julie, Tom, Terry, Dick, Craig, and Tim.

After his military service, Jack returned to his roots in Iowa, where he worked diligently as a farm hand, nurturing the land and livestock. His later years were spent sharing his skills at Spahn and Rose in Charlotte, Iowa, and as a handyman at WALMART in Maquoketa.

A member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Delmar, Jack’s faith was an integral part of his life.  Jack’s love for the outdoors was undeniable. He was a deer hunter and mushroom forager, and camping trips with his family were cherished times. But above all, fishing was Jack’s passion. He spent countless hours on lakes and rivers, often with a family member by his side, sharing his knowledge and love for the sport.  He also was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan, Jack never missed a game, cheering on his team.

Jack’s legacy is carried on by his beloved wife, Patricia Ann Cahill of Delmar, IA; his children, Brenda (Dave) Fitzpatrick of Maquoketa, IA, Julie (Mike) Babcock of Maquoketa, IA, Tom (special friend Connie) Cahill of Maquoketa, IA, Terry Cahill of Delmar, IA, Dick (Tammi) Cahill of Wheatland, IA, Craig (Teresa) Cahill of DeWitt, IA, and Tim (Lois) Cahill of Lisbon, IA. His memory will also be treasured by his 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Peter and James; his sisters, Martha Litty, Mary Luckey, and Cheryl Ezard; and daughters-in-law, Patsy Cahill and Sue Cahill.

A funeral mass celebrating his life will be held at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Delmar, Iowa.  Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 P.M., Monday, April 21, 2025, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa, Iowa.  Burial with military honors will be at St. Pat’s Cemetery, Delmar.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a John F. “Jack” Cahill memorial fund has been established.
