John L. Widel
John L. Widel, 66, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at his home after a valiant fight against cancer.
John was born June 24, 1959, in Maquoketa, to Lyle and Barbara (Zaruba) Widel. He graduated from Maquoketa High School in 1977. John married LeAnn Rockwell on July 3, 1982.
John’s most recent employment was at Guardian Industries in Dewitt, Iowa, working as a crane operator. Retiring after 17 years in 2022 due to a surgery that put him in remission. John was an avid sports fan, proudly supporting the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Bears and Cubs. Probably his favorite hobby was trying his luck by picking up a couple of lottery tickets to scratch off every time he had the chance. He also enjoyed his daily walks in town along with sitting in his recliner with his granddogs watching a game show or the news.
John is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife LeAnn Widel of Maquoketa; daughters Abby Widel of Eldridge, Iowa, and Lexi (Ian) Ballantine of Davenport, Iowa; brother Dick (Beth) Widel of Maquoketa; sisters Judy Carr of Maquoketa, and Joyce (Rich) Majerus of Sycamore, Illinois; brothers–in–law Loren (Patty) Rockwell and Stacey (Darcie) Rockwell of Maquoketa; his step grandson Liam Ballantine; as well as many nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son Aaron Widel; sister Barbara Sue Miller; brother-in-law Tony Carr; and niece Kara Widel.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at the Eagles Club in Maquoketa. Cremation rites have been accorded. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Jackson County.
