Joni Kubesh, 74, of Peosta, died Friday, June 26, 2026, at her home following a brief and intense battle with cancer.
A prayer service will be held at 3:30 pm Tuesday, June 30, 2026 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory followed by visitation until 7:00 pm.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Joni will be 10:30 am Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at Church of the Resurrection with Father Phil Gibbs as the Celebrant. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery in Dubuque.
Joni was born May 6, 1952, in Decorah, IA, the daughter of Marvin and Marcella Phillips Soukup. On October 23, 1971, she married John Kubesh at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, IA. He passed away on July 20, 2015.
She was a 1970 graduate of South Winneshiek High School in Calmar, IA.
Joni began her career with Wm. C. Brown in 1976, and remained with the company through its various transitions, ultimately retiring from Quad Graphics in 2012 after 36 years of dedicated service. After the loss of her husband, she returned to work part-time at Carlisle Ryan Digital Printing, enjoying both the social connections and the chance to stay engaged.
She loved spending time outdoors. Whether it meant doing her own lawn work, going for long walks, or the occasional game of golf, she embraced an active lifestyle. However, she was just as happy binge-watching Netflix, especially during the winter months. She treasured many friendships and was known for her kindness and thoughtfulness, always keeping in touch with a text, a handwritten card, or a lunch date. She also found joy in sharing inspirational quotes, funny jokes, and cheerful GIFs, always finding little ways to brighten someone’s day or bring a smile to their face. With her warm smile, cheerful personality, and impeccable sense of style, she was a light in every room and always took pride in looking her best. After losing John, her faithful dog, Indy, became a constant source of comfort and unconditional love. Indy’s passing just before last Christmas was another profound loss for her. Above all, she loved her family with all her heart. Being a mom and grandma was her greatest joy.
Survivors include one daughter, Shelby (Brian) White of Peosta; one granddaughter, Allison (Jake Rheingans) White of Asbury; one grandson, Tyler White of Peosta; two sisters, Connie Arens of Calmar and Janice (Russ) Turner of Oelwein; three brothers, Marvin (Mary) Soukup, Jr. of Calmar, Dale Soukup of Marion, Doug (Betty) Soukup of Calmar; several sisters- and brothers-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, her father- and mother-in-law, Robert and Iona Kubesh, and one sister-in-law, Mary Jo Novak.
A memorial has been established.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the nurses and staff on the 4th floor at MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center, her entire medical team, especially Dr. Engelman and Dr. Rodriguez, and the nurses and staff at Hospice of Dubuque for their compassionate care and support. They are especially thankful for the overwhelming amount of love and support from family and friends during these last twelve days.
