Joyce A. Coohey

Joyce Ann Coohey, 85, of Dubuque, IA, passed away peacefully at home of natural causes on February 13, 2024.

She will be buried in the Cascade Cemetery near her Mom and Dad.  There will be a celebration of life held at a later date. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road is assisting the family.

Joyce was born on a snowy day, January 8, 1939, on the family farm, in Bernard, IA, to William and Lucille (Kerper) Coohey.

She received her education first in a one room country school in Bernard, then in Fillmore, then graduated from St. Martins High School in Cascade.  Joyce entered the convent with the Sisters of Mercy, RSM.  She then furthered her education by getting her Master’s in art and also a degree in Theology.  She taught in Guttenburg, Independence, Dubuque, Michigan, and St. Paul.

She was a friend to all and was always smiling.  Family was very important to Joyce and would like to be remembered for “helping kids grow.”  Joyce’s philosophy of life was “Be the best person you can and help those around you do the same.”

Survivors include Joyce’s siblings and in-laws, Margie (Steve) Fry of Cuba City, WI, Pat (Carol) Coohey of Asbury, Rose (Denny) Topping, Mike (Sandy) Coohey both of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews.

Joyce was preceded in death by her mom and dad, Bill and Lucille, her two brothers, Jack and Donnie, sister-in-law Velma Coohey, one niece and two nephews.

Joyce’s family would like to thank the neighbors and friends who have stayed in contact for so many years.  A special thank you to Kim for her help throughout all of this.  Also, to the Dubuque Police Department, The Medical Examiner and Leonard Funeral Home for all they have done for our family.
