Joyce was born September 29, 1934 in Dubuque, the daughter of Willard and Amanda (Rafoth) Magson. She grew up on Greeley St. with her parents and sister Joanne, next to her Grandparents and other Rafoth aunts and uncles. Joyce made lifelong friends in the Broadway neighborhood, where she also met Robert “Bob” B. Kahle, whom she graduated with in the class of 1952 from Senior High School and later married on Feb. 5, 1955 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
Joyce was a determined and intelligent woman who was good at all she put her mind to. In the early years before marriage, she worked in the Research & Development department at Carr Co. while attending the University of Dubuque. Once married, Joyce and Bob worked very hard to build a good life for their family. In addition to working as a full time mother, Joyce always maintained her creativity, her stylishness, and sense of humor. Joyce and Bob enjoyed being active, taking the family camping every weekend in the summer and fall, and playing cards and games with family and friends.
Her hobbies included making ceramics and knitting (afghans, sweaters), much of which she gave away as gifts. Joyce also enjoyed singing in various choirs (like her mother), playing bridge, collecting, and especially acting as a nun in the play “Nunsense”. She enjoyed the Round Robin letters and the longtime friendships with the “girls” who participated in these letters. She always liked to be aware of current events and be a part of what was happening in her little part of the world. Joyce and Bob were fortunate to travel to many places in their lifetime. They lived most of their lives together in Dubuque, but also lived for a time in Cassville WI and Dickeyville, WI.
Surviving Joyce are her children, Michelle Stanisch of West Bend, WI, Lorna (Mike) Laugen of Orange, CA, Tim Kahle of Dubuque, Angie (Mike) Maas of Dubuque, and John (Jane) Kahle of Draper, UT; 12 grandchildren, Ben, Tony (Sara), Matt, Alex, Bianca (Adam), Natalie (Brian), Alicia (Bob), Taylor, Alexi, Ruby (Jordan), Simon, and Lilah; six great grandchildren; sister in law, Sandy Kahle; brother in law, Don (sister in law, Erm) Kahle MD; and brother in law, Larry Seiler; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Robert on June 11, 2015; a daughter, Lisa Ann; her parents; her sister Joanne; and several aunts and uncles, including Ruth and June who were so close to her heart.
A special thank you to the staff at Mercy Medical Center; Dr. Konz and Dr. Whalen.
