Laurence R. Sloman

Laurence R. “Larry” Sloman, age 87, of Dubuque, passed away at 3:26 p.m., on Monday, June 1, 2026, at Luther Manor surrounded by his loving family.  To celebrate Larry’s life, family and friends may visit from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street.  Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Thursday at Behr Funeral Home, with Deacon David Roth officiating.  Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery, Dubuque, with Military Honors accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League.

Larry was born on October 13, 1938, in Iowa City, son of Dorothy Brose.

He attended Dubuque Senior High School before joining the U.S. Marine Corps in October 1955.  Larry served his country for 3 years until October 1958.  Following his service he returned to Dubuque where he was introduced to a young friend of the family, Patricia Hesselman.  Larry moved to California and took a job with Republic Aviation for a few years. He returned to Dubuque and took a job at Jaeger Hardware and re-connected with Pat.  They were married on August 3, 1963 at St. Mary’s Church in Dubuque.  Larry worked for the Dubuque Packing Company for over 23 years until his retirement in 1983.  He then worked in the automotive industry in Dubuque at Sears Automotive, Tires Plus and delivering for auto parts stores in the area.  Larry had several other odd jobs to stay busy.
Aside from Larry’s family, his passion was the Dubuque Marine Corps League.  He joined in 1969 and has held several positions and leadership roles.  He was elected twice as the Detachment Commandant and maintained his role as the Master of Ceremonies for the Marine Corps Birthday Ball for 40 years until his retirement in 2015 due to his health.

Those left to cherish Larry’s memory include

his wife of 63 years, Pat Sloman, Dubuque, IA;

his son, Chris (Diane) Sloman, Dubuque, IA;

his daughter, Angie (Rich) Schmaltz, West Des Moines, IA;

6 grandchildren: Kim (Jared) Irish, Bob Sloman, Caitlin Tedford, Hannah (Alex) Smith, Morgan (Matt) Olsen and Madeline (Sam) Glancy;

7 great-grandchildren, Mason, McKinley, Kit, Rory, Hadley, Declan and Maeve;

his brother, John (Ann) Meyer, Eau Claire, WI.

Larry was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy (Harold) Meyer and twin great-grandchildren, Luka and Ira Smith.

Larry’s family would like to thank the staffs of Luther Manor and Hospice of Dubuque for their kindness and compassion over the last few years.
