Leora Thornhill Bemboom

Leora (Welp) Thornhill Bemboom, 93, of Dubuque, IA, formerly of East Dubuque, IL, peacefully passed away on Wednesday afternoon, May 1, 2024 at Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque surrounded by her loving family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at the Church of the Resurrection in Dubuque, with Rev. Dustin Vu officiating. Entombment will be in the Resurrection Garden Mausoleum at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Family and friends may call from 4 – 7 p.m. on Monday at the Miller Funeral Home in East Dubuque and from 12:45 – 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday at the church.

Leora was born on Friday, June 13, 1930 in East Dubuque, the daughter of Joseph G. and Ida C. (Klaas) Welp. She went to St. Mary’s Grade School in East Dubuque, and graduated from the East Dubuque High School.

Leora married Jesse Thornhill, Jr. on August 2, 1958, they divorced in 1967 and he died on December 28, 2005.

She was a member of Parents Without Partners (PWP) where she met the love of her life, Leo Bemboom.  They were united in marriage on January 15, 1987 in Dubuque.  He preceded her in death on March 21, 1996.

Leora’s last employment was 26 years at W. C. Brown Publishing Co in the bindery and customer service. After retirement in 1992 Leora went to exercise class at Mercy Silver Advantage. In August 2005 JoAnn Scannel & Leora continued the exercise class & eating at the Lifetime Center.

Surviving is her beloved daughter Tina (Thornhill) Timmerman, her wonderful son-in-law Randy Timmerman of Dubuque; her precious grandchildren Megan Timmerman Salvador & her wife Brittany Salvador of McHenry, IL, Malorie Timmerman Jones & her husband Khalen Jones and their children, Mia Lynn & Kohen Parker Jones of Gulf Breeze, FL, Brad Timmerman, wife Leah Martens Timmerman and daughters Laurel Violet and Maren Jo of St. Catherine, IA; her siblings, Glenn (Pat) Welp of East Dubuque, Janet (Lloyd) Berning of Hazel Green, WI, and Joyce (Syl) Langmeier of Cuba City, WI; step-children, Dennis (Judi) Bemboom of Dubuque, Judy (Steve) Wiebenga of Maquoketa, Dale (Cathie) Bemboom of North Buena Vista, & Donald Bemboom; many nieces & nephews as well as step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren, two aunts, Elsie Beitzel of Dickeyville, WI, and JuDea Klaas of Hudson, WI; very special friends, Kim Bemboom and husband Darren DeMoss of Dubuque.

Leora was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Ida, her husband Leo, siblings, Rosita “Rosie” Meyer and Norman Welp, brother-in-law, Richard Meyer, and nephews Joel Meyer and Ronald Welp.

Leora was so well organized that she already had her obituary written. Special thanks to Stonehill and Hospice of Dubuque, especially Sue Houselog and Sarah Fern, for the very special care shown to Leora and her family.
