Maurelia Kennedy
Maurelia Kennedy, lovingly known as “Mimi,” passed away peacefully on August 30, 2025, at the Grand Meadows Care Center in Asbury, Iowa, following a short battle with pneumonia. She was 95.
Born on April 18, 1930, in East Dubuque, Illinois, Mimi was the daughter of Rosalia (Thole) and Dennis Kennedy. She grew up with a deep appreciation for family, community, and the simple joys of life.
Mimi held various jobs throughout her lifetime, but she found true joy in her time teaching at the Montessori school. Surrounded by children, she shared her warmth, patience, and playful spirit—qualities that made her especially beloved by her students and their families. An avid walker, Mimi was a familiar and friendly face to many as she strolled countless miles through town, rain or shine. Her daily walks were more than a routine – they were a reflection of her independence.
Mimi is survived by her sister Doris Hart of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister Alice Overhouse and brother-in-law Ray Overhouse; her brother Ken and sister-in-law Jean (Peterson) Kennedy; and her brother-in-law Clarence Hart. She was well loved by her many nieces and nephews
A funeral Mass will be held in her honor on Thursday, September 4th at 11:00 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in East Dubuque, Illinois, with Fr. Bosco Aruldoss officiating. Burial will be in East Dubuque Cemetery.
A very special thank you to all family, friends and neighbors who helped Mimi over the years, especially John and Mary, Gina and Pat, Kathy, Karen, John O., Bill, Daisy, Bernie, Christianna (Heal to Thrive), Elizabeth (In Home Personal Services), Hospice of Dubuque and Christa Weber ARNP.
