Nicholas Distler

Nicholas Distler, age 46, of Scales Mound, IL, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday December 13, 2025 leaving behind a lot of love, laughter, and stories we’ll be telling for years. He was a son, father, brother, a friend, and someone who showed up in his own way for the people he cared about.

Nick was born February 1, 1979, in Dubuque IA, the son of Diane (Self) and Ron Distler. He was a 1997 graduate of Scales Mound High School.

Growing up in the small town of Scales Mound, Nick never traveled too far from home, and when he did leave, the road led him back to Scales Mound. Nick loved farming and was always eager to get the crops planted each spring, even if it was two weeks too early.  The long days, hard work, and completing harvest season were things he truly valued and carried with him throughout his life.

He  was co-owner of MD Lawncare where he loved mowing grass, and long days outdoors. Nick was also the Guilford Road Commissioner, where he took pride in keeping the roads well cared for and the simple satisfaction of a job well done. Cold weather, however, was never his favorite. Nick much preferred the warmth of the growing season than winter weather.

Nick helped coach his son’s youth basketball team and watched that team grow into one of the most successful teams in Scales Mound School history.

Nick had a secret talent for baking chocolate chip cookies, and they were always his dish to pass for every family event. Somehow, they were always perfectly baked and tasted better than the last batch. But he would never share his recipe, when asked he would say the secret ingredient was “Love”.

Nick is survived by his three children, Derrick, Levi and Austin Distler; his parents; Diane (Elton) Self, Ron (Elizabeth Randall) Distler, brother Nathan (Danielle) Distler; sister Melissa (Chris) Wachter; Step-brother Jacob Randall, Step-sister; Bethany Randall, former wife, Melissa Distler, and his nieces and nephews; Ella & Rori Distler, Lilli Valentino, Ian & Anna Wachter and Lyla Randall.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bill and Priscilla Edge, John & Deloris Distler,  Uncle; Johnny Distler and Aunt; Donna West.

Though his passing was unexpected, the impact he made will not be forgotten. He will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered.

Family and friends may call from 1:30 p.m. – 4:15 p.m., with service to follow at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at the Miller & Steinke Funeral Home, in Scales Mound.
