Rachel L. Berning

Rachel L. (Sutter) Berning, 30, of rural Hazel Green, WI, passed away at 3:40 p.m. on Friday, May 26, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, Iowa City, IA, after a two year battle with breast cancer.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 1, 2023, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in East Dubuque, with Fr. Dennis Vargas officiating.  Burial will be in the East Dubuque Cemetery.

Family and friends may call from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 31st. at St. Mary’s Church (170 Montgomery Ave.) in East Dubuque and from 9:15 – 10:15 a.m. on Thursday at the church.  There will be a Parish Prayer Service at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the church. The Miller Funeral Home of East Dubuque is serving the family.

Rachel was born on August 21, 1992, in Dubuque, IA, the daughter of Mark R. and Jane M. (Reynolds) Sutter. She was a graduate of East Dubuque High School, the class of 2010. Rachel also received an Associate’s Degree from NICC, Peosta, IA.

She was employed as a Customer Service Specialist at Packers Chemical, Kieler, WI, for the past 10 years.

Rachel was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart Tim R. Berning on September 12, 2015 at St. Mary’s Church, East Dubuque.

Her greatest joy in life was being a wife and mother. She also enjoyed being a big sister, spending time with her family and friends, traveling, shopping, going to concerts, trips to the casino, watching movies and boat rides on the Mississippi River.

Surviving is her husband, Tim; her daughter, Harper; her parents, Mark (Vicky) Sutter and Jane (Scott) Schauer both of East Dubuque; her in-laws, Gary and Deb (Bussan) Berning of Menominee; siblings, Jonathan and Colin Sutter; step-siblings, Brett Davidson, Justin Schauer, Jaimie Stark, and Jason Schauer; her sibling in-laws, Becky (Scott) Bradley, Jeff Berning (Brianne), Andy Berning (Brooke), and Michael Berning (Liz); maternal grandparents, Bill and Virginia Reynolds; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Joseph and Eileen (Martelle) Sutter.

Rachel’s family would like to thank the tri-state community for all their love and support the past two years.

In lieu of flowers, a Rachel Berning memorial fund has been established for Harper’s future educational expenses.
