Robert was born July 15, 1935, in Dubuque, IA, the son of Harold and Margaret Quick Mauer. On August 13, 1960, he married Darlene Ann Pfeiler in Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Dubuque. They enjoyed 62 wonderful years together. She preceded him in death on January 22, 2022.

He was a 1954 graduate of Loras Academy. Following high school, he served his country in the Army Reserves and rose through the NCO ranks.

Bob was a conductor and brakeman for Chicago Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad, where he was affectionately known as “Poopsie” by his coworkers and friends. Bob eventually retired from the Soo Line Railroad in 1995.

Bob and Darlene were avid Chicago Cubs and Green Bay Packer fans and all were invited into their home to celebrate the many wins and losses. He treasured the many hours spent hunting and fishing with his son, Mike, and grandson Jacob. He never missed the chance to enjoy a good brandy and continually told his kids to “Keep the Faith”.

Survivors include his six children, Julie L. (Sidney) Horst of Bellevue, Jeffery R. Mauer of Rochelle, IL, Michelle M. (Edward) Baker of Peosta, IA, Kathy A. (Brian) Dunne of Marion, IA, Vicki S. McIntyre of Asbury,  Michael A. (Renae) Mauer of Sherrill, IA; one brother, Dan (Mary Paul) Mauer of Bellevue; three brothers-in-law, Kenneth (Darlene) Pfeiler of Asbury, Roger (Donna) Pfeiler of Dubuque, and Randy (Diane) Pfeiler of Cedar Rapids, IA; 13 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.

The family would like to give their thanks to Julie of Hospice of Dubuque, Michelle of No Place Like Home and Hawkeye Care Center. A special thank you to his granddaughter, Lisa Jansen, who spent countless hours caring for Bob.
