Born on December 21, 1933, in Dubuque, Iowa, Roger was the youngest of seven children born to Roger F. Kutsch and Helen Hannig.
He attended Nativity School and graduated from Senior High School in 1951, forming lifelong friendships and embracing the values that would guide him throughout his life.
During his senior year, Roger worked at KDTH radio station alongside his sister Gladys and colleagues Gordy Kilgore, Betty Thomas, and Bob Gribbon. He was also a popular DJ, spinning records at local dances and bringing the joy of music to his community.
He served with distinction in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, fulfilling the role of supply clerk reliably managing his battalion’s logistical needs. Notably, he received a Letter of Commendation for his participation in the All-Korea Volleyball Tournament. After returning home, he was employed aboard the Coal Queen under Captain Richards. Later his professional journey took him to John Deere, where he dedicated many years of service as Supervisor of Specification in the catalog department. Over the decades, Roger forged close bonds with colleagues who became lifelong friends. He genuinely enjoyed his work; a particular highlight was the opportunity to work in Germany on a special project-one he recalled with pride and fondness.
Roger’s adventurous spirit led him to help establish the Dubuque Water Ski Club in 1958, where his beloved 1963 Ski Nautique became a fixture on the river. He delighted in pulling skiers, guiding beginner and seasoned skiers alike, and spending countless summers sharing laughter and Old Milwaukee beer with family and friends. Snow skiing was another of Roger’s lifelong passions. He passed on his love for the sport to his children and grandchildren. For many years, Roger served on the Sundown Ski Patrol, offering care and assistance to injured skiers whenever the need arose and helping ensure everyone could enjoy their time on the slopes. Days on the river and ski slopes became cherished memories that reflected Roger’s love for life and his devotion to those around him.
Roger’s life was deeply anchored in faith. As a longtime member of Resurrection Church, he found both solace and inspiration within its community. His devotion led him to serve as a Eucharistic minister, sharing the sacrament and his faith with others. Roger’s faith was not just a private conviction but a guiding force that shaped his relationships and his steadfast dedication to sharing warmth and kindness to everyone he met.
In April 1967, Roger married the love of his life, DeeAnn Zapf. Together, they built a life filled with joy, laughter, and travel-embarking on cruises and bus tours across the globe, sometimes with friends and family, sometimes just the two of them. His greatest pride was his children-Steve, Chris, and Ron-and his grandchildren-Sydney, Allie, Erin, and Nikolas. He celebrated their achievements and cherished their successes.
Roger is survived by his beloved wife DeeAnn; his children Steven (Carmen Sondalle), Christina (Corey Cheney), and Ronald (Kristina Corliss); and grandchildren Sydney, Allie, Erin, and Nikolas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings George (Eleanor) Kutsch, Ralph (Janet) Kutsch, Gladys Walton, Mary (Jim) Earle, Betty (Jim) Hoffmann, and one sibling who passed at birth. He is also fondly remembered by cousins, nieces, and nephews whose lives were truly enriched by his presence, especially his spirited Santa appearances.
I lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Wounded Warrior Project.
Roger will be remembered for his warmth, integrity, and unwavering devotion to family. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
