Roger W. Gross

Roger W. Gross, 77, of Dubuque, IA, passed away on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at his daughter’s home, Sue Voss of rural Galena, IL.

Family and friends may call from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 16th at the Miller Funeral Home in East Dubuque, IL, where military honors will be accorded by members of the Dubuque Marine Corps League at 6:30 p.m. A visitation will also be held on Tuesday, June 17th from 9:30 – 10:15 a.m. at the Galena Bible Church, where funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the East Dubuque Cemetery.

Roger was born on October 18, 1947, in Dubuque, IA, the son of Ralph and Gertrude (Boxler) Gross.  He was a graduate of Dubuque Senior High School, the class of 1965. Roger was united in marriage to Patricia Hoftender on April 17, 1971, at St. Mary’s Church in East Dubuque.

He was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force serving during the Vietnam War and was formerly employed at Union-Hoermann Press as a pressman retiring after 40 years of service. Roger was a member of the Pressman Union, Local # 120.

Roger loved gardening, traveling, attending the local car shows and tinkering with his cars. He looked forward to the yearly trip to Gays Mills, WI with his family and spoiling his grandchildren.

Surviving is his wife, Pat; two daughters, Brenda (Terry) Stowers of Dubuque, IA, and Sue (Terry) Voss of Galena, IL; 11 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren; his siblings, Donald (Nancy) Gross of St. Donatus, IA, and Janet Brehm of Dubuque, IA, in-laws, LeRoy Hoftender of East Dubuque, Rosemary (Hubert) Brimeyer, Jr. of Dubuque, IA, Vince “Jiggs” Hoftender of East Dubuque, Shirley (Rick) Gassman of Dubuque, and Gerald “Moe” (Linda) Hoftender and sister-in-law, Deanna Hoftender both of East Dubuque and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Gertrude, two sons-in-law, DJ. Elliott and Todd Molzof, two half-brothers, Louie and Izzy Miller.

Pat and family wish to send a special thank you to Dr. Brian Sullivan and the nurses and staff at Hospice of Dubuque for the wonderful care provided for Roger.

A Roger Gross memorial fund has been established.
