Stephen L. Turnis
Stephen Lawrence Turnis, 86, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away peacefully at the University of Iowa Hospital on March 2, 2025, surrounded by his family.
A prayer service will be held at 4:00 pm Friday, March 7, 2025 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory followed by visitation until 7:00 pm.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Steve will be 10:30 am Saturday, March 8, 2025, at Church of the Resurrection with Father Phil Gibbs as the Celebrant. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque. Full military honors will be rendered by the American Legion Post #6 and the Iowa Army National Guard.
Born on November 17, 1938, in Monticello, Iowa, he was the son of Raymond Joseph and Mary Florence (White) Turnis. On November 19, 1966, he married Arlene Margaret Weber in St. Donatus.
Steve graduated from Loras Academy before working on the family farm until serving in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963. Following his service, Steve began a long career with United Parcel Service (UPS), where he worked for 32 years until his retirement in 1998.
He found great joy in fishing, gardening, and working on puzzles. He also had a deep devotion to his faith and took pride in making rosaries for friends, family, missions and the military. Above all, he cherished time spent with his loved ones.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Arlene; his four children, Doug (Kate) Turnis of Ankeny, IA, and their children Lucas and Jamison; Ken (Erin) Turnis of North Liberty, IA, and their children, Charlie, Will and Cooper; Michelle (Calvin) Williams of Goodyear, AZ, and their children Mikayla and Trey; and Melissa (Rob) Powell of Buckeye, AZ, and their children Hailey and Lexi.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Tom; his sister Mary Kay Connolly; brothers-in-law Frank Naber and Don Steffensmeier; and his father and mother-in-law, Raymond and Mary Weber.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the University of Iowa Hospital and Dr. Jennifer Mohr and the nurses at Mercy Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
