Terry was born November 24, 1940, in Dubuque, son of Robert and Pauline (Rutledge) Fortmann. He was in the last graduating class of Loras Academy (’59).
After graduating from high school, he started his career in retail, working for many years for Roshek’s and Stampfer’s as a buyer and culminating as general manager. He later went into real estate, as one of the partner owners of Dubuque Partners Realty, affiliated with Iowa Realty. He was the past president of the Dubuque Realtor’s Association.
Terry was a past member of Dubuque Optimist, Knights of Columbus and was a scout leader.
Terry enjoyed a great game of euchre, volleyball and golf. He was quite the competitor and was always up for a game with family and friends. He also was an almost lifelong bowler, with a weekly team sponsored by Happy’s Place. He was a tremendous fan of the Green Bay Packers and Boston Celtics, as well as a recent fan of Iowa Women’s Basketball.
He was a longtime member of Resurrection Church, and enjoyed finding ways to support the community through raffle sales, parish counsel and fellowship with parishioners.
His greatest compliment is that he is a wonderful husband, loving father and a good man.
Terry is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Ida Fortmann of Dubuque; three children, Kristie (Pat) Doser of Solon, Beth (Steve Holzhueter) Ofstein of Ankeny; and Keith (Dana) Fortmann of St. Louis; and seven grandchildren, Jacob (Shonay Joe) Doser; Brett, Conrad and Sydney (Noah Christiensen) Ofstein; and Alex (Jordan) Fortmann-Tennison, Sam and Grace Fortmann.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandmother, Agnes Grady, and his brother, Robert “Bobby” Jr. Memorial gifts may be sent to Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Funeral Home and Crematory as they assist the family through this difficult time.
