Carolyn A. Bruns
Carolyn A. (Hammerand) Bruns, 76, of Zwingle, Iowa, passed away on Thursday morning, February 20, 2025, at home.
Carolyn Arlene Hammerand was born on December 4, 1948 at Dr. Swift’s Hospital in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Arnie Louis and Bernice Caroline (Oberman) Hammerand. She met the love of her life square dancing on Valentines Day 1964, Robert M. Bruns. They dated all through her high school years. Carolyn graduated from Delwood Community High School in May of 1967. They were married at the First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa on June 4, 1967.
Carolyn and Robert lived in Zwingle, buying their farm in 1970. She joined Harmony United Church of Christ, where she was a leader of Women’s Fellowship, Secretary of the Church Council and had served as a Sunday school teacher.
While Bob was driving semi, Carolyn stayed home and did the farming along with raising their four children, Aaron, Mary, Robert, and Arnie. Carolyn was very proud of her farming and would stand in her fields admiring her hard work. She was a member of the Codfish Hollow Saddle Club where she barrel raced and participated in parades. She loved to cook and taught her three boys how to cook. She also loved to garden and canned her own food. She also loved to crochet, embroidery, and sewing clothes for her and Mary. She enjoyed watching baseball, especially the Cubs and Cardinals and would often exchange phone calls with her son Aaron when her Cubs were winning. Carolyn enjoyed WWE wrestling, and was a fan of football with her favorite teams being the Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings.
Carolyn’s legacy is carried on by her loving family, who will forever cherish her memory. She is survived by her husband, Robert Bruns of Zwingle, IA; sons, Aaron Isaac and his wife Elizabeth (Clark) Bruns and their daughters Ava Bernice and Emily Erinn Bruns; Robert Martin II and his wife Molly Bruns and their son Aidan Michael Bruns; and Arnie Fredrick Cort and his wife Jennifer (Vorwald) Bruns. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her daughter Mary Elizabeth Bruns who passed away on July 2, 2013.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11 A.M., Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held prior to the funeral from 9:30 to 11 A.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Andrew, Iowa Cemetery.
