Daniel H. Arling, Sr.

Daniel Henry Arling, Sr, 82, passed away at home with his loving family at his side on December 16, 2023.

As Dan has chosen to donate his body to the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine deeded body program, there will only be a private visitation for his family. Graveside services with military honors at Holy Family will be at a later date. A Celebration of Dan’s Life will be announced at a later date.

Dan was born in Dubuque on April 29, 1941 and was especially proud of being a “lifetime Dubuquer”. He was the son of Martin Arling, Sr and Eleanor (nee Mense) Arling, who had arrived in Dubuque in 1935 from their hometown of St Libory, IL., at the behest of Harry Wahlert who was establishing the new Dubuque Packing Company. Martin went on to head the processing of the famous Dubuque Fluer De Lis Ham and upon retiring, passed the leadership to his son, Martin, Jr.  The “Pack” went on to become important work  for many in the Arling family.

Dan graduated from Loras Academy in 1959. He was drafted into the US Army in 1963 and served proudly as an Army Medical-Specialist in Stuttgart-Viangen, Germany, Patch Barracks, 19th Army Med Attachment, 7th Army Headquarters. After his service years, Dan attended Loras College and completed his Accounting degree. His lifetime work was in the meatpacking business and his tax accounting business.

During these years, Dan was introduced to a pretty red haired nurse from Farley, Iowa.  That led to their marriage in 1969, followed by a family of three children and seven grandchildren. Following his retirement in 2005, Dan volunteered to drive his fellow veterans to their Iowa City VA appointments for the following seven years. Dan also volunteered with AARP helping others complete their tax forms, for many years. Traveling  and camping were also favorite activities in Carol and Dan’s retirement years.

Dan was proceeded in death by his parents, Martin, Sr and Eleanor (nee Mense), brothers Martin, Jr and John, and many St Libory aunts, uncles and cousins.

Dan is survived by his wife Carol (Griffin), children Hank (Stephanie), Kate (Dr. Scott) and Peter (Kate), and grandchildren Will, Chase, Gabrielle, Emily, Henry, Grant, and Harrison.

The family requests no flowers, but memorials may be made in Dan’s name to the Dubuque Mission, the Shriner’s Hospital and Hospice of Dubuque.
