David Harris

The family of David Harris is deeply saddened to share that he passed unexpectedly at the age of 80 on Sunday, July 5, 2026. He was born in Nashville, TN to David Walker Sr. and Joyce Glenda (Muse) Harris on January 4, 1946. He grew up all over the Midwest and spent the last 40 years of his life in Dubuque, IA. His early career experiences inspired him to pursue a profession in social work and helping others.

He began his decades-long career in public service in Madison and Richland Center, WI, working for non-profit housing agencies. He then relocated with his wife and first son to Dubuque, where he worked for the City Housing Department to provide his local community with affordable and safe access to resources and housing. After his initial retirement, he returned to his roots, dedicating his time working for the non-profit CHI, renovating homes in the historic Washington neighborhood for first-time homeowners. He had a particular talent for connecting people and resources to accomplish shared goals. David believed strongly in protecting equal rights and opportunities in his community.

He is survived by his wife, Becky, and his sons Lucas (Ashley) Harris of Robbinsdale, MN and Griffen (Monica) Harris of St. Charles, IL.

David spent 37 years maintaining and improving their 1899 farmstead where he and Becky raised their two sons. He took great pride in his sons and their accomplishments, and joyously welcomed into the family two wonderful daughters-in-law.

At home, there would always be music playing, often jazz, blues, or classic rock. He was an avid history buff and sought to understand the background of a place or person. His book collection grew over the years to include a wide variety of topics, often focusing on the trials and tribulations of historical figures and periods. He was endlessly curious about the history of words and figures of speech, and would often share “did you know” factoids with those fortunate to be in his circle. David firmly believed that if a thing was worth doing, it was worth doing right.  He believed deeply in the value of hard work.

Though it came later in life, he discovered a joy of travel and visiting other places, especially the “path less traveled”.

A gathering to celebrate David’s life will be held at a later date for close friends and family. To honor David’s long career in public service, in lieu of flowers, his family requests donations be sent to Dubuque Food Pantry where he served on the Board and volunteered for many years.

Had he had his druthers, this entry would be written with no capital letters.

i carry your heart with me (i carry it in my heart)
i am never without it (anywhere you go)
