Doris J. Hazer

Doris Jeanne Hazer, 80, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at home under the care of Hospice of Jackson County.

Doris Jeanne Flenker was born on August 8, 1944 in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Woodrow “Woody” and Florence Francis (Pfoeltner) Flenker.  She was a 1962 graduate of Maquoketa High School.  On July 10, 1965, she married the love of her life, Harlan Joseph Hazer, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Otter Creek, Iowa. Together, they welcomed three sons into the world, creating a family that would be her pride and joy.

Doris’s professional life was marked by her dedication to the community’s youngest members. She began her career nurturing children at Sunshine Daycare and Preschool in Maquoketa. She also had a love of history which led her to working at the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium, and Mathias Ham House Museum, both in Dubuque.

Beyond her work, Doris was an active member of the Coronado Car Club, where she indulged her love for classic automobiles, and was well-known by her Volkswagen Beetle Convertible. She also enjoyed the friendship of the Otter Creek Bunco Club which she was a proud member of for 47 years.  She especially loved her family and no family gathering was complete without her famous mac’n’cheese and cookie dough.

Doris’s legacy is carried on by her loving family, who will forever cherish her memory. She is survived by her sons, Brian (Jen) Hazer of Bernard, IA, and Dave (Kim) Hazer of Maquoketa, IA; her adored grandchildren, Morgan, Colton, Kailie (fiancé Ryne Daum), and Faith Hazer; her sister, Darlene Cook of Maquoketa, IA; in-laws, Al Hazer of ID, and Mary Kay Flenker of Maquoketa, IA; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Woody and Florence Flenker; her beloved husband, Harlan Hazer; her son, John Hazer; her brothers, Roger Flenker and Richard “Dick” Flenker; and in-laws, Allan Cook and Lois Hazer.

A gathering of family and friends celebrating her life will be held on Monday, February 24, 2025, from 1 to 3 P.M. in “The Bistro” at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. A private burial will be held at a later date at St. Lawrence Cemetery, Otter Creek, Iowa. Cremation rites have been accorded.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a Doris Jeanne Hazer memorial fund has been established.

The family would like to especially thank the staff of Hospice of Jackson County.
