Harlan R. Pfohl, 92, of Dubuque, died Monday, August 3, 2026, at Grand Meadows in Asbury.

A prayer service will be held at 4:00 pm, Thursday, August 6, 2026, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory, followed by visitation until 8:00 pm.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Harlan will be 10:30 am Friday, August 7, 2026, at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Sherrill with Father Phil Gibbs as the Celebrant.  Burial will be in SS Peter and Paul Cemetery in Sherrill. Full military honors will be rendered by the American Legion Post #6.

Harlan “Sonny” was born March 11, 1934, in Sherrill, IA, the son of Roy J. and Viola C. (Kintzle) Pfohl. He was born and raised on the family’s Century Farm, where he developed a lifelong love of farming. The farm has remained in the family for more than 113 years, and Harlan took great pride in carrying on that legacy until his retirement. In addition to farming, he also worked at the Dubuque Packing Company and Celotex.

He proudly served his country in the United States Army as a medic stationed in Germany from 1956 to 1958. Shortly after returning home from the Army, Harlan met the love of his life, Janet (Murray) Healey, at Melody Mill. They were united in marriage on November 14, 1959, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dubuque and were blessed with 66 years together. Harlan loved to dance, and it was fitting that a night on the dance floor led him to the love of his life.

A faithful member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, he enjoyed watching NASCAR and wrestling and was a familiar face at the local stock car races every Sunday. Above all, his greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Janet; seven children, Debbie (Gary) Osthoff of Dubuque, Cindy (Ron) Hill of Maquoketa, James Healey of Dubuque, Kathy (Dave) Berns of Cedar Falls, John (Judy) Pfohl of Dubuque, Michael (Nicena) Pfohl of Sherrill, and Thomas (Marilyn) Pfohl of Dubuque, IA; 29 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and two more on the way; in-laws, Alan Murray, Mike (Jill) Murray, Shirley (Dennis) Barger, all of Cedar Rapids, and Pat (Dave) Hefel of Sherrill; and numerous nieces, nephews, and Godchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two grandsons, Jason A. Schmitt and Nicholas Pfohl; two step-grandsons, Aaron Osthoff and Tyson Hill; one great-grandson, Colten Bisping; one brother, Robert Pfohl; two sisters, Audrey (Melvin) Oberfoell and Carol (Merlin) Anthony; his father- and mother-in-law, Raymond and Clara (Smith) Murray; and in-laws, Richard (Dorothy) Murray, Gerry Murray, and Mary Anne (Galen) Stickley.

A memorial has been established for Dubuque County Right to Life.

Harlan’s family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff at Grand Meadows and Hospice of Dubuque for the compassionate care and kindness they provided. They would also like to thank Dr. Runde and Dr. Harvey for their care and support.
