Marvin M. Franzen
Marvin Matthew Franzen, 81, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at home.
Marvin Matthew Franzen was born on September 8, 1944, in Jackson County, Iowa, to Mathias “Math” and Mary Evenlyn (Dwyer) Franzen. He graduated from Richland Township Country School. On January 6, 1968, he was united in marriage to Barbara L. Ponder in Maquoketa, Iowa, and together they built a life centered on family, hard work, and lasting devotion. To this union, two children were born, Marty and Marlene.
Marvin began working at the age of 13 for Arnold Stamp on the Stamp farm and lived with Arnold until he was married. He continued working for Arnold and Arnold’s family for 45 years, a testament to his loyalty, and work ethic. At the same time, he worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad out of Clinton, Iowa, for more than 30 years as a car man. He later worked for Clinton Engines in Maquoketa and then as a welder for Giese Sheet Metals in Dubuque, Iowa. Marvin also served as an assistant for Dr. Yanda, worked for Dr. Risius at Risius Vet Clinic, and later worked for Dr. Mike Slattery and the Maquoketa Livestock Sale Barn. Through all of these years, he remained a dependable and respected man who took pride in doing every job well.
Marvin was also generous with his time and knowledge, especially when it came to helping others get started. He helped his son Marty and his grandson Dustin build their own cow herd and fencing business, teaching them everything he knew along the way. He also enjoyed helping sell sweet corn for his good friend Rich Duhme. His willingness to lend a hand and share his experience left a lasting impression on those around him.
Marvin loved farming and raising cattle, and he found great satisfaction in the simple rhythms of rural life. He enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, mushroom hunting, squirrel hunting, and playing Euchre with family and friends. He was a social butterfly who was happiest in the company of others, and his warm presence and easy conversation made him a welcome friend to many. Above all else, his family was the center of his life, and his most treasured moments were spent with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife of 58 years, Barbara Franzen of Maquoketa, Iowa; his children, Marty (Kim Point) Franzen of Preston, Iowa, and Marlene (Shawn) Flagel of Maquoketa, Iowa; four grandchildren, Brittni (Brad) Bunge, Molly Franzen Anglin, Mel Franzen Anglin, and Dustin Franzen; four great-grandchildren, Brayler, Brecklynn, Briley, and Barrett; his brother, Wayne (Julia) Franzen of Maquoketa, Iowa; his sister, Patricia (Orville) Wagner of Delmar, Iowa; his sisters-in-law, Lois Franzen, Cheryl Franzen, and Marie Franzen; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Vince (Darlene), James (Marletta), Gerald, Leonard, Martin, Butch, JoAnn (Tom) Reider, Anna Marie (Norbert) Wagner, Marcelene (Alan) Eganhouse, Margaret “Rosalie” Franzen, and Rita Hughes.
