James “Jim” W. Huff, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2026, surrounded by his family.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Bread of Life Presbyterian Church 2155 University Ave Dubuque, IA. A funeral service will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd, is assisting the family.

He was born on March 11, 1938, in Prairie du Chien, WI, and lived a life marked by dedication to his family, his work, his community, and service to others.

Jim graduated from Madison Central High School in May 1955 and went on to attend the University of Wisconsin, graduating in 1961 with a degree in metallurgical engineering. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1956 to 1961. He completed his MBA from Drake University in 1979.

On August 29, 1959, Jim married the love of his life, Sue Strand. Together, they built a loving family and shared more than 67 years of marriage. Jim was the proud father of Steven (Teresa) Huff and Catherine (Mike) Van Paemel. His family was his greatest joy, and he took great pride in watching his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren compete in swimming, playing the violin and cello in orchestra and all other activities.

He is survived by his grandchildren, Jesse (Jarika) Huff, Jordan (Deidre) Huff, Connor (Annika) Huff, Gabrielle, and Elizabeth Van Paemel; and his great-grandchildren, Tryggve, Niyah, and Darbi. He was also eagerly anticipating the arrival of another great-grandchild, due in October 2026.

Jim was deeply committed to his community and believed in giving his time and talents to help others. He served on the Dubuque Community School Board and was honored to serve as President. He was also involved with the Colts Drum & Bugle Corps, Mt. Pleasant Retirement Home, and the Salvation Army. His faith was an important part of his life, and he served on the Session of Westminster Presbyterian Church, (Bread of Life). Through these many organizations and causes, Jim quietly and faithfully made a difference in the lives of others.

Jim’s professional life was one of remarkable dedication. He worked at John Deere Dubuque Works from 1961 until 1992. After retiring from John Deere, Jim agreed to a six-month consulting position with Dubuque Stamp. True to his work ethic and commitment, that six-month position continued for almost 30 years, lasting until August 2026.

In Jim’s spare time, he enjoyed reading historical biographies and mysteries. He loved tinkering in his garden and puttering on the computer. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His family is grateful that Jim’s final moments were peaceful and that he was surrounded by those he loved.
