Kay A. Greenwood, also known as Mugsy to her family, gained entrance into the Kingdom of God on Thursday, October 12, 2023. To celebrate Kay’s life we will have visitation and funeral services at the Word of Life Church, 4450 Dodge Street, with visitation on Friday, October 20, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m., and funeral services starting promptly thereafter with Pastor Loren Hirschy officiating.  Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens.  Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street is assisting the family.

Kay was born on March 24, 1941, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Lyman and Violet (Gratton) Jones.

She graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy in 1959.  She met her husband Jerry at the Melody Mill Ballroom where she gained the nick name Kitty Jones when she got up to sing with the band. He instantly became smitten and they married two years later at Holy Ghost Church in Dubuque, Iowa on February 4, 1961.  They danced thru 62 anniversaries together, even winning a few contests. They had a full and loving marriage.

Kay loved to clean.  She worked as a matron for many years for the school system, including Jefferson  and Lincoln Schools, Dr. Nemmers and Dr. Meester’s offices, and Finley Hospital.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents, her infant son, Jeffrey, her brother, Gary, a sister, Carol, and a brother-in-law, Virgil Rans.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry, her children, Steven (Meg) Greenwood, Kurt (Nancy) Greenwood and Renee (Jeffrey) Speaker. Grandchildren, Roger, Kyle (Natalie), Hope, Tessa, Emily, Brandon, Kaitlyn. Great grandchild, Cameron. Her brother, Allen (Lois) Jones, her sisters, Sandy (Gary) Welborn, Jane (Jerry) Gilbert, and Karen Rans, and many nieces and nephews.

Kay’s family would like to thank the nurses and staff of both Ennoble and Caring Initiatives Hospice for all of the outstanding care they provided for Kay.
