Kevin “Bacon” Brandel, 66, of Durango, died Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, October 4, 2026 at the Riverfront Pavilion in Eagle Point Park from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.

Kevin was born September 22, 1959, in Dubuque, IA, the son of Harold and Virginia (Waldbillig) Brandel.

He graduated from Hempstead High School.

Kevin worked building bridges and lastly worked for Anderson Windows.

He enjoyed being outdoors, especially hunting with his dogs, fishing, and riding his motorcycle. Known as “Mr. Fix-It,” Kevin was always willing to lend a hand and could fix just about anything. His family will miss his tradition for calling on their birthdays and singing to them.

Survivors include his Fiancée of 16 years, Joan Lindsay of Durango; Joan’s two sons, Evan and Nick Lindsay; her two grandchildren, Bella and Brandtley; three siblings, Pam Smothers, Steve (Donna) Brandel, and Kim Knutson all of Dubuque;seven nieces and nephews, David (Mickie) Henkels, Dan (Sarah) Henkels, Mandy (Dave) DeMuth, Katie, Jen, and Jess Knutson, and Kyle (Megan) Knutson; 11 great-nieces and nephews; and his extra special hunting partners, Buddy, Zeke, and Cooper.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers-in-law, Richard Knutson and Steven Smothers, two nephews, Jeremy and Jacob Knutson, and one niece, Tina Henkels.

Kevin’s family would like to thank the staff in the Mercy ER Department, Finley Hospital, Paramount Ambulance, the University of Iowa MICU doctors and nurses, especially his two nurse angels, Audrey and Emily for their care and support. A specially thank you to his hunting and fishing friends, Victor, Jeff, and Steve for all of the great memories they made with him.
