Lois Jean Black, age 91, of Dubuque, IA, completed her earthly journey on September 18, 2026, at home while surrounded by her loving family.  To honor Lois’ life, a memorial service will be held at Hope Church at a later date.  Burial will be in the Union Cemetery in Hellertown, PA, at a later date.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Lois’ family.

Lois was born on July 29, 1935, in Johnstown, PA, a daughter to Vincent and Florene (Davis) Haney.  She grew up with a determination to help and serve others wherever possible which was a natural fit as a nurse.  After graduating from Armagh High School, Class of ’53, she went into the Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and eventually graduated with the Class of ’56.  She was united in marriage to G. Meade Black, on June 14^th of that same year in Johnstown, PA, and they began their life together chasing the American dream, later raising their two children along the way.  Lois would invest well over 30 years of her working career with both the Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital until 1964, and finally with Easton Hospital in Bethlehem, PA, after her husband was transferred with Bethlehem Steel.  In 2006, Lois moved into retirement and after the passing of her husband, G. Meade, she made her way to Dubuque, IA, to be closer to family. 

In her free-time, Lois never passed up an opportunity to spend a little time at the shore.  The family made regular trips to Sea Isle City, N.J. and Chincoteague, VA, where she kept her crabbing skills up to speed.  Her love for blue crabs was well known with family and friends. Lois also had a green thumb which produced beautiful flower and vegetable gardens. Lois enjoyed traveling with her husband and friends. Later years could find her working on her latest jig-saw puzzle with her daughter and grandchildren.

Lois’ faith life was a driving force in her daily life as well.  Whether she was joining her ladies bible study group for some quality time together in the Word, or studying the Bible on her own time, or even volunteering to assist with any of the church activities which arose; Lois’ devotion was evident and lived out faithfully in her words, thoughts and actions throughout her life.  Thankfully, it is this exact fact that helps us to find peace today after the passing of Lois from our earthly lives.  Her faith in Jesus tells us that she is resting in His presence at this very moment and we only have to wait until our earthly journey is complete in God’s schedule to see her once again, and next time, in absolute perfection free from the sin and brokenness of this world.

Thank you, Lois, for living a full life, leading by example as a wife, mother, grandmother and friend should, and for leaving behind so many precious memories for all who knew and loved you to lean into as we begin to navigate our new reality without your love and light shining among us.  May the Lord bless and keep you safe and secure in His loving arms until we meet again.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, G. Meade Black; her great-granddaughter, Nicole Ann Black; and her brother, Vernon “Butch” (Shirley) Haney.
