Melvin J. Matous

Melvin John Matous Jr., 70, of Dubuque, died on Monday, April 20, 2026, at AdventHealth Tampa in Tampa, FL.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Melvin was born August 20, 1955, in Dubuque, IA, the son of Melvin John Sr. and Mae Belle (Green) Matous. On April 3, 1976, he married Judith Ann Clarke in Dubuque.

He began his working career at Beidler Texaco gas station, followed by Dan Kruse Pontiac, followed by positions at John Deere Dubuque Works, Carpet Shack, and Dubuque Wholesale Carpet. In 1994, he went on to open his own business, Mel’s Flooring Outlet.

Melvin was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and rarely missed an opportunity to cheer them on. He had a lifelong love of sports, especially baseball and softball, and enjoyed both playing and following the game. He also found great enjoyment in bowling and spending time around the poker table with friends. In quieter moments, Melvin took pride in his woodworking projects, creating pieces that reflected his patience, skill, and attention to detail.

Survivors include his wife, Judi Matous of Dubuque; two children, Kristin (Travis) Smith of Dubuque, and Nicholas (Tara) Matous of Dubuque; four grandsons, Dominic, Tyler, Lucas, and Joseph Smith; two sisters, Nancy (Ken) Clayton of Dubuque, and Helen (Ken) Heacock of Dubuque; one brother-in-law, Donald Berg of East Dubuque, IL; and many beloved nieces and nephews

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and one sister, Madonna Berg.
