Michael “Mike” Smyth, 85, of Dubuque, died Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at his home.

A prayer service will be held at 4:00 pm on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory, followed by visitation until 7:00 pm.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Michael will be at 10:30 am on Monday, August 10, 2026, at Holy Spirit Parish – Holy Ghost Catholic Church, with Father Jacob Francois as the Celebrant.  Entombment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque.

Michael was born September 13, 1940, in Dubuque, IA, the son of Frank and Lillian Ann Meyers Smyth. On April 11, 1964, he married Sandra Lee Obershaw in Dubuque.

He was a 1959 graduate of Loras Academy in Dubuque and served in the National Guard.

Mike was a Tool Maker – Supervisor for John Deere Dubuque Works for 34 years and also owned and operated Mike’s Motorcycle Maintenance.

Mike was a devoted member of Holy Spirit Parish – Holy Ghost Catholic Church, where he served as a lector and usher, helped with maintenance projects, and served on the parish school board. He was an active member of God’s Country Motorcycle Club, the Asbury Snow Hawks Snowmobile Club, the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), the Tri-State Motorcycle Club, and the Corvette Club. A talented small-engine mechanic, Mike enjoyed repairing engines in his spare time. He loved the open road, especially on cross-country motorcycle trips, and could often be found attending Corvette and antique car shows.

Survivors include his wife, Sandy; one daughter, Pam (Charles) Stierman of Dubuque; one granddaughter, Cynthia (Dusty) Thomas; and one nephew, Joshua (Christine) Smyth.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Ronald Smyth, and his father- and mother-in-law.

A memorial has been established.

Mike’s family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff at Hospice of Dubuque and their wonderful friends, neighbors, and everyone who offered prayers, support, visits, and acts of kindness throughout Mike’s illness. Your love and generosity have been a source of comfort and will not be forgotten.
