Richard A. Rekemeyer

Richard A. Rekemeyer, 80, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at Mercy One Genesis East Campus, Davenport, Iowa.

Rich was born April 9, 1946, in Bennett, Iowa, to Jack and Alverna (Goettsch) Rekemeyer.  He grew up on a farm outside of Davenport and graduated from Central High School in 1965.  Richard proudly served his country in the United States Army and was stationed in Fort Hood, TX.   Following his service, Richard was united in marriage to Janet Beck in Galena, IL on May 6, 1971.

Rich worked for many years building and testing guns at the Rock Island Arsenal in Rock Island, Illinois.  He later worked at Rasmussen’s in Maquoketa, worked in construction for Ostwinkle Construction, was a supervisor at D.A.C. in Maquoketa, before retiring as a dump truck driver for Seven Hills Paving.

Richard was an avid outdoorsman.  He loved all hunting, but especially deer hunting.  He would go on daily deer runs, where he would drive his favorite gravel roads and count all the deer and wildlife he saw.  Rich also enjoyed trout fishing, taking his granddaughters, Maddy and Abby, to teach them the skills and patience to catch fish.  He also enjoyed bird watching and in later years feeding the pigeons while visiting his sister in Arizona.  Rich enjoyed grilling, collecting arrowheads and buying rough turquoise stones and having them made into jewelry for his loved ones.  He enjoyed playing cards with his family.

Rich was a very kind, loving and giving man who would help anyone at any time with anything.  Rich lived by the motto “think love” and this was apparent by his loving, patient nature. In his later years Rich enjoyed traveling to Arizona to visit his sister and her family.  His favorite pastime there was to go to the desert and collect spines from the dead saguaro cacti and make walking sticks.  Richard was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Maquoketa.

Those left to honor his memory include his daughters Whitney (Nick) Meyer of Maquoketa, IA, and Annette Green of Idaho; his son Jason Rekemeyer of Maquoketa; sister Peggy (Renee) Mejia of Mesa, Arizona; his nephew and hunting buddy Mike Rekemeyer of Davenport; seven grandchildren and seven great – grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jan, and his identical twin brother Ron Rekemeyer.

At Peace Cremation Services were provided by the Carson Celebration of Life Center.  A celebration of life gathering will be held at a later date.
