Roann Marie Leitner, age 86, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on Monday August 17, 2026, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics following a brief illness.  To celebrate Roann’s life, family and friends may visit from 9:00 a.m. until 10:15 a.m., on Thursday, August 20,2026, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1701 Rhomberg Avenue.  Funeral services will be held immediately following visitation at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday at the church.  Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.  Behr Funeral Home is assisting Roann’s family.

Roann was born July 20, 1940, in Dubuque, the daughter of Joseph and Greta Schiessl. She married Harry Leitner on Sept. 16, 1961, at St. Mary’s Church in Dubuque, and they were blessed with four children and an abundance of cherished memories.
Harry preceded her in death on Sept. 23, 2019.

Roann was a very active member of Holy Trinity, serving as a eucharistic minister, and brought joy to her community and her cherished neighbors with an ever-present smile, a quick wit and a kind and supportive demeanor. She always insisted, “Everything is going to be OK” – a reassurance that all of those who knew and loved her can use during this difficult time.

Roann is survived by her children, Dolores “Dee” (Hank) Koester, of Dubuque; Jim (Maggie) Leitner, of Dubuque; and Kevin (Maria) Leitner, of Chicago; four grandchildren, Amanda Koester (Christine Pezzulo), Alyssa Koester, Gabby Leitner and Bailey Leitner; great-grandchildren, Tatum Pezzulo-Koester and Tanner Pezzulo-Koester; siblings Bob (Linda) Schiessl, of Lincoln, Neb.; John (Jackie) Schiessl, of Ridgefield, Wash.; Martha (Dave) Olson, of Hot Springs Village, Ark.; Mary (Denny) Healy, of Eldridge, Iowa; Carol (Tom) Smith, of Dubuque; and Jan (Tony) George, of Sherrill, Iowa; her sisters-in-law, Carol Tietjen, of Davenport, Iowa; and Darlene Kaufmann, of Dubuque; along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, neighbors and her long-time walking buddy, Lil Stumpf.

Roann was also preceded in death by her parents; her in-laws Harold and Mary (Roepsch) Leitner; her daughter, Diane Leitner; and her brothers-in-law, Dick Tietjen and Arnie Kaufmann.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Roann’s name.
