William Charles Mitchell, 83, of Peosta, died Saturday, August 15, 2026, at MercyOne Medical Center in Clinton, IA.

Visitation will be from 1:00 pm until 1:45 pm on Thursday, August 20, 2026 at St. Peter Lutheran Church.

The Funeral Service for William will be at 2:00 pm on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at St. Peter Lutheran Church with Nichole Robson officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis.

William was born April 14, 1943, in St. Paul, MN, the son of John and Verna (Sackreiter) Mitchell. On September 6, 1969, he married Elaine Swanson in Minneapolis, MN. She preceded him in death on January 29, 2026.

He received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Minnesota. He served in the United States Air Force from 1961until 1963. William spent his working career as an Electrical Engineer for Alliant Energy.

Bill was a member of the Dubuque Optimist Club, Dubuque County Republican Party, and St. Peter Lutheran Church. He cherished traveling with his wife, creating lasting memories on their journeys together. Together, they visited every U.S. state, all Canadian provinces, except the Northwest Territories, much of South America, excluding Argentina and Chile, and every continent except Asia and Antarctica. Bill also enjoyed taking special individual trips with each of his children. He was never in a hurry and believed in giving people his time, attention, and a listening ear. He loved a long drive and never took a shortcut, always enjoying the journey as much as the destination. He especially enjoyed cruising, woodworking, and camping in the Boundary Waters, where he could spend time in the outdoors and appreciate the simple pleasures of life.

Survivors include three children, David Mitchell of Dubuque, Thomas (Alexa) Mitchell of Dubuque, and Eryn (Jason) Dietzenbach of Ames, IA; eight grandchildren, Robert J. Kohl, Grant, Kaya, Zander, and Drew Dietzenbach, Winston, Elaina, Theo Mitchell; sister, Jan (Bob) Gundershaug; brother-in-law, Roger (Joan) Swanson,; and several nieces and nephews.

William was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and brother-in-law, Robert (Nancy) Swanson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in William’s name to Heifer International.
