Stephen “Steve” Butt, 77, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away peacefully at home on September 22, 2026, surrounded by his family.

Friends and family may visit from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Monday, September 28, 2026, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road. A funeral service will be held at 5:00 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Ken Bickel officiating.

Steve was born August 16, 1949, the son of James “Jim” Butt and Jane (Pauly) Butt. Steve grew up in a flower shop and became a gifted floral designer who had an amazing eye and talent for creating breathtaking floral arrangements. Steve started his career early working for his father at Butt’s Florist in 1958. In 1989, following Jim Butt’s retirement, Steve assumed Butt’s Florist with his wife, Sue, and sister, Patti, until selling the business and retiring in 2016.

During his time, he mentored many aspiring designers on the design and mechanics of floral design. Steve always worked hard and when nearing retirement, he and Sue started the renovation and revitalization of property that eventually became their home at 233 and 241 Main Street in Dubuque, where he commissioned the “Dude,” a metal sculpture overlooking the 2nd and Main Street intersection and a floral mural honoring the life of Iowan botanist, educator, and preservationist, Ada Hayden.

Steve loved his children and his grandchildren very deeply and nothing brought him more joy than the presence of children and being with his family. Steve enjoyed music, tinkering around the house, and spending time outdoors and boating on the Mississippi River and exploring Tuna Beach.

Steve is survived by his loving wife, Sue (Greenfield) Butt; his children James “JD” (Sandy) Butt, Andi (Bronson) Shavitz and Erica (Dave Curtis) Butt; grandchildren Charlie Butt, Kate Butt, Hayden Shavitz, Sienna Shavitz, Finley Curtis and Willow Curtis; and his sister Patti Schroeder.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings in infancy Debbie and Jeff Butt.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to Hospice of Dubuque, friends, family, neighbors, and to all of those who helped and supported Steve during his struggle with Alzheimer’s.
