William “Bill” Wesenberg, 94, of Dubuque, died Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque with his family by his side.

The Committal Service will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, September 17, 2026 at Mount Calvary Cemetery Chapel, Dubuque where full military honors will be rendered by American Legion Post #6.

William was born February 22, 1932, in Dubuque, IA, the son of Ernest and Marie (Bisanz) Wesenberg. On April 19, 1952, he married Kathleen “Kay” M. Koster in Holy Trinity Catholic Church. She preceded him in death on December 17, 2018.

Bill was a true handyman, working for Turnquist Flooring, the Dubuque Packing Company and Thermolyne.

Bill was a proud United States Navy veteran and was honored to be the oldest-serving Iowan called to active duty during Desert Storm, answering the call at the age of 58. As a firefighter, he felt strongly about serving so that younger service members who had children at home would not have to leave their families. He was a longtime member of American Legion Post #6 and took great pride in his military service.

In his earlier years, Bill enjoyed bowling and was known throughout his life as a very hard worker, often spending much of his time working. When he had the opportunity to slow down, Bill enjoyed spending weekends with his family at his cottage in Bellevue along the river, where he could relax on his pontoon and enjoy the water. He also had a great passion for traveling, especially cruises and all-inclusive vacations. Whether sitting by the beach or relaxing poolside, Bill enjoyed making the most of his time away and creating lasting memories. He also was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed cheering on both the Iowa Hawkeye’s and Iowa State Cyclones, wanting to support his grandchildren that attended each of those schools.

Survivors include two sons, Steven (Linda) Wesenberg and Jeffrey (Sandra) Wesenberg both of Dubuque; four grandchildren, Jenna (C.J.) Krapfl, Alex (Corinne) Wesenberg, Andrea (Aaron) Duggan, and Travis (Sarah) Troy; five great-grandchildren, William  Krapfl, Ashlynn and Jax Duggan, and Maci and Kaiser Troy; one sister, Rosemary Hennessy of Hazel Green, WI; two sisters-in-law, Rita Trentz of Dubuque and Janet Wesenberg of Arvada, CO; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents and his wife, Bill was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Amanda Wesenberg; one brother, John Wesenberg; and brothers-in-law, Bill Trentz and Jim Hennessy.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt Thank You to the nurses and staff at Oak Park Place, Stonehill, and Hospice of Dubuque, especially Jeremiah, for all of the loving and compassionate care they all provided to Bill.
