Frederick K. Koehler

Frederick K. “Fred” Koehler, 87, of Sherrill, passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2024.  Private funeral services were held. The Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Fred was born March 26, 1936, in Dubuque, son of Dewey and Rose (Loeffelholz) Koehler.  On May 2, 1959, he married Thelma Dausener at Faith United Methodist Church.

Fred served in the Army National Guard.  He worked at John Deere Dubuque works for 30 years, retiring in 1990.

Fred enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, playing cards and bowling.  He was also an avid Cub’s fan.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma of Sherrill; three children, Kim (Jeff) Spoerre of Sherrill, Debra (Roy) Romans of North Liberty, and Steve (Mary Lou) Koehler of Dubuque; seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.  He is also survived by two siblings, Jane Jentz and Bill Koehler.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Viola; a brother in law, Clarence, and his parents.

Rev. Ivan C. Schroder

Rev. Ivan C. Schroder, a devoted servant of the Lord and a cherished member of his community, was called home to glory on January 17, 2024. Born on June 26, 1936, in Rock Island, Illinois, he was a beacon of faith and love throughout his 87 years on this earth. His journey began as the son of Arthur and Rosella May (Kelly) Schroder, and from those early days in the Quad Cities, his light began to shine.

After serving his country with honor in the U.S. Marines, Rev. Ivan found his lifelong love with Glenda Duncan, and was united in marriage on October 16, 1960 in Hartford City, Indiana.  Together they embarked on a path of devotion, raising a family that would grow to include five children, seventeen grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren, with one more blessed soul on the way.  They continue to carry the torch of his legacy. 

Rev. Ivan was a man of deep conviction and education, earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Theology from Indiana Bible College. His calling led him to shepherd flocks in Harrisburg, Illinois, and Clinton, Iowa, before he settled in Maquoketa in 1985 as the beloved Pastor of the Maquoketa United Pentecostal Church/Apostolic Gospel Tabernacle Church. His retirement in 2011 marked the end of a storied career that included not only leading his congregation but also serving as the Sunday School director for camps with United Pentecostal International and operating IGS Office Supply in Maquoketa.

His life was a testament to the joy of the Gospel, and his interests reflected the richness of his character. Rev. Ivan was a man who found solace in the tranquility of fishing, the company of a good book, and the laughter of children. He delighted in reading “Arthur’s Good Manners” to his grandchildren, imparting wisdom, and kindness with every word.  In May of 2016, he was honored and blessed to go on the Quad Cities Honor Flight.

Those left to honor his memory include children, Lisa (Kevin) Lex of Hartford City, IN, Mark (Janice) Schroder of Galloway, OH, Sonya (Jim) Jones of Maquoketa, IA, Dan (Jennifer) Schroder of Huntington, IN, and James (Annie) Schroder of Tipton, IA; 17 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren with one on the way; a brother, Melvin Schroder of DeWitt, IA; sister-in-law, Phyllis Maxwell; and many nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his wife Glenda on November 14, 2020, his parents, 3 sisters, 2 brothers, and a  grandson Lucas Schroder. 

A celebration of his life will be held at 12 P.M., Friday, January 26, 2024, at Faith Community Church in Maquoketa.  Visitation will be held prior to the funeral from 10 A.M. to 12 P.M. at the church.  Burial with military honors will be at Union Cemetery, rural Maquoketa.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to the Apostolic Gospel Tabernacle Church in Maquoketa.

LaVonne M. Ruff

LaVonne Mary Ruff, née Grant, 86, of Bellevue, Iowa, passed away on January 18th, 2024, at home.

Friends and family may visit from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday January 23rd, 2024, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, with a Wake Service to begin at 4:00 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday January 24th, 2024 at 10:30 a.m., at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Key West with Monsignor Thomas Toale officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

LaVonne Mary Grant was born on August 7th, 1937, to Clement Henry Grant and Mary Agnes Pitz Grant. She went to a one room schoolhouse near Scales Mounds, Illinois. She graduated from Scaled Mound High School in 1955.

LaVonne met her true love when she was 16 at Moonlite Gardens. Remigius Ruff and LaVonne married December 31st, 1956. Remigius was in the United Stated Army for two years. Together they had three children: Steven J. Ruff Sr., Debra Jean Ruff, and Jeffrey Clement Ruff. Sadly, Debra passed away on September 17th, 2012.

LaVonne loved to cook. Her husband said she could make a meal out of nothing. She loved to watch western movies, Gunsmoke, and anything with John Wayne and Audie Murphy. She liked to watch and listen to anything Elvis. LaVonne was also very proud of her military family.

LaVonne is survived by her children Steven Ruff and Jeffrey Ruff, 9 grandchildren Amanda Jean Burnett, Melissa Ruff Keleher, Ricky Allen Burnett, Shaun Joseph Ruff, Adam Michael Burnett, David Lee Ruff, Robert Karl Burnett, Steven Joseph Ruff Jr., and Amber Ruff Ishmeal, 16 great grandchildren Erik, Faith, Korben, Cole, and Savannah Burnett, Nathan, Nolan, and Adalyn Keleher, Ryder, Tucker, Cheyanne, Issabella, and Makenna Ruff, and Carter and Tripp Ishmeal, one great-great-grandchild Olivia Piper Burnett, brother Clem J. Grant, and sister Pamela (Bruce) Marie Grant Vangondon.

She was preceded in death by her husband Remigius on November 11th, 2004, daughter Debra Jean Burnett, three brothers Clement “Merlin” Grant, Patrick Donald Grant, and Robert Orland Grant, grandparents Patrick and Anna (McDermott) Grant and John B. and Anna (Peters) Pitz.

She wants to give thanks to Jeffrey for all he did for her, especially taking her out to eat and doctor’s appointments, and for all of his patience. She sends her love to her grandchildren for all being there for her.

Robert J. Connolly

Robert J. “Bob” Connolly, 65, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clincs following a brief illness.

Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 22, 2024, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a wake service will be at 3:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at St. Joseph Key West Church with Msgr. Thomas Toale officiating. Additional visitation starting at 9:00a.m. will be held at the church on Tuesday. The burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Bob was born on August 30, 1958, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Cletus and Geri (Hayes) Connolly. He graduated in 1976 from Dubuque Senior High School and attended Iowa State University.

He worked for Rainbo Tire, Frommelt Industries/Rite Hite and was self-employed on the family farm.

He is survived by his mother Geri Connolly; sisters: Cathy McCullough, Diane (Randy) Pancratz and Susan Connolly; brothers: Mike (Karen) Connolly and Bill (Kim) Connolly. Nephews: Keith (Eileen) Connolly, Brian (Emily) Connolly, Matt (Roselyn) Connolly, Ryan McCullough, Dan McCullough, Ben Pancratz (Bryana Pfeiler), Nick Connolly and Dalton Connolly. Nieces: Molly McCullough, Kelly Pancratz, Anna Pancratz (Austin Moyer) and Jenna Pancratz and 5 great-nieces. Aunts: Rose (Bob) Carr and Margaret Hayes; along with many cousins, friends and his beloved dog, Zoey

He was preceded in death by his father Cletus Connolly; brothers-in-law: Mike McCullough and Leo Pancratz along with his grandparents and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

The family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses at Unity Point Finley in Dubuque and to the Neurology ICU at the University of Iowa Hospital for their wonderful care, also Pat Leonard and his staff at Leonard Funeral Home for their kindness and compassion.

Dr. Dale L. Lonning

Dr. Dale L. Lonning, age 52, of Dubuque, IA, completed his earthly journey on January 15, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics while surrounded by his loving family.  To honor Dale’s life, a private service is being held at Grand View Methodist Church.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Dale’s family.

Dale was born on November 22, 1971, in Waukon, IA, the youngest son of Frank and Revelyn (Robey) Lonning.  He was raised with a strong work ethic and a kind and generous spirit. Dale earned his Bachelor’s degree from Simpson College and completed his Doctorate in Chiropractic at Palmer College before he and his wife, Danielle Heck-Lonning, moved to Dubuque to begin their careers and start a family.  Danielle was sadly called home ahead of Dale on April 12, 2019 – If there is any peace to be found it’s simply that he and Danielle are now reunited again for all of eternity.

Dale took great pride in his work, but he also appreciated that to experience true joy in this life, there must be balance.  His generosity made the world a better place and his sense of humor could brighten any room.  In his free-time, Dale looked forward to football season and was always ready to watch his Hawkeye’s play.  Dale was gifted with a strong intellect which afforded him the ability to recall endless facts on a wide array of subjects at a moment’s notice.  If there was ever a perfect member to be present on any trivia team, Dale would have always been the ringer.  It’s difficult to imagine moving forward without Dale and Danielle walking among us.  Our hearts could not possibly be heavier and more broken than we find them today, but we pray that we will find peace in time in the abundance of wonderful memories he leaves behind.

Jerome A. Hefel

Jerome A. “Jerry” Hefel, 84, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on January 17, 2024, at MercyOne Medical Center.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Ghost Church. A Funeral Mass will be held at 12:00 p.m. with Fr. Steve Garner officiating. A private burial will be held at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, Dubuque, Iowa is assisting the family.

He married the love of his life Sharon Weig on May 13, 1961, at Holy Ghost Church, Dubuque, IA.

Jerry was a devoted lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs and Green Bay Packers. He also enjoyed following the Iowa Hawkeyes.   For many years, Jerry participated in league bowling at Riverside Bowl.  He also coached for several years for Dubuque Independent League baseball and was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1992.

Jerry was loved and adored by his family. He was known for his fun-loving spirit and playful sense of humor. He was a very caring and kind person and very involved with his family. He was a faithful follower of his sports teams and enjoyed watching the games with his family and attending Cubs games when possible. He would enjoy the occasional trip to the local casino and rarely turned down a meal dining out at restaurants. Jerry will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Jerry is survived by four children: Steve (Diane) Hefel and Jack (Michele) Hefel of Peosta, IA, Julie (Steve) DeWitt and Bill (Maneka) of Dubuque, IA. Grandchildren: Linsey Petrousek, Abbie Hefel, Nikki Vondra, Megan Timmerman, Jared and Alex Hefel, and Erik Hefel. Step-grandchildren Kristal Kruse, Alena and Jaylen. Great-grandchildren Rosemarie Peterousk, Lucy, Henry, Oliver and Theo Vondra, and Benson and Baylor Timmerman. Step great-grandchildren Caleb and Alice Rumple. Three siblings: Marilyn (Mike) Nitz of Rancho Palace Verde, CA, Donna Reid of Rockford, IL and Grace Green of Ulathe, KS. Brothers-in-law, Daniel (Vee) Weig, Dennis (Lori) Weig and Andy LuGrain of Dubuque and many nieces and nephews.

Jerry was preceded in death by his loving wife Sharon; his parents, George and Emma Hefel; sister Irene Haupt; brothers Kenneth, Lyle and Richard Hefel; parents-in-law James and Marcella Weig; sisters-in-law Donna Hefel, Mary LuGrain and Janice Weig; brothers-in-law Keith Reid, Mike Green, and Larry Haupt.

Mary C. Zapf

Mary Catherine Zapf of Dubuque Iowa passed away on January 17th, 2024, at Harmony Nursing Home in Dubuque, Iowa.

A Memorial Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 27th, 2024, at St. Columbkille Catholic Church with Fr. David Schatz officiating. Private burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in East Dubuque, IL. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, Dubuque, Iowa is assisting the family.

Mary Catherine was born March 11, 1937 to Elvira I. (Maire) and Herbert J. Zapf.  She attended grade school at St Mary’s in East Dubuque and high school at Immaculate Conception Academy in Dubuque.

She received her RN degree at St Anthony’s Hospital School of Nursing in Rock Island, Il (2 years).  She attended Iowa Methodist Medical Center Powell 3 in Des Moines, Iowa for substance abuse counselor training and Carlson College of Massage Therapy in Anamosa, Iowa.

She joined the United States Air Force in 1964 and served as a nurse for 8 years stationed in Turkey,  Japan and various air force hospitals in the United States.  After her Air Force service Mary Catherine worked at Xavier Hospital in Dubuque.

Some know Mary Catherine as “the Wild Woman”.  She loved being around children.  She loved nature, especially walks in the woods, being by the river, seeing the changing colors of autumn leaves.

She enjoyed sledding, swimming and arranging flowers.  She also enjoyed giving and receiving cards for every occasion.  Mary Catherine was rich in friends and will be remembered for her kindness and for the sound of her laughter.

Mary Catherine is survived by cousins, nephews, and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Dubuque Arboretum and to Hospice of Dubuque.

Donna J. Less

Donna J. Less, 69, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on November 16th, 2023, at Luther Manor Communities – Hillcrest.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Happy’s Place in Dubuque from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on January 27th, 2024. Private family burial will be in St. John Cemetery in Placid, Iowa. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, is assisting the family.

Donna was born on January 19th, 1954, in Balltown, Iowa, daughter of John Henry & Rita W. (Schmidt) Pothoff. She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School and was united in marriage to Allan Less in 1980 at St. Anthony’s Church in Dubuque. She worked at Frommelts and RiteHite, cutting and sewing.

Donna is survived by her two sons Keith (Michelle Burgin) and Anthony Less, grandchildren Isabella and Isack, and siblings Eileen Atchison, Ron (Betty) Pothoff, Al (Katie) Pothoff, Frank (Jayne) Pothoff, Jan Grady, and Sandy (Kevin) Ehlers all of Dubuque.

She was preceded in death by her husband Allan in 2011, her parents, and two brothers-in-law Danny Atchison and Jim Grady.

Dr. Brenda A. McKinney

Dr. Brenda Ann McKinney, 70, of Galena, IL, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Wednesday, January 17, 2024. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM on Thursday, January 25, 2024, at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena where friends may call after 11 AM until the time of service. Burial will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Galena. The family invites all those who knew and loved Brenda to join them in celebrating her life.

She was born December 13, 1953, in Taylorville, IL, the daughter of Willis “Mac” and Ann (Kennedy) McKinney. Brenda led a remarkable life filled with accomplishments and cherished memories. She attended elementary school in Mount Auburn, later High School in both Galena and Stockton, and continued her education at Highland Community College, Northern Illinois University, and Aurora University. Brenda dedicated 34 years of her career to education. Teaching English and literature, coaching volleyball, and directing school and community plays at the Junior High and High School in Stockton. Her passion for teaching led her to pursue a Doctorate in Education. She later shared her knowledge and expertise at the University of Dubuque.

After retiring, Brenda found fulfillment as the Activity Director at Bell Tower Senior Home in East Dubuque. She treasured spending time with her family, and friends, as well as fulfilling her wanderlust by exploring various “bucket list” vacation spots and traveling. Brenda enjoyed going to garage sales and finding “treasures.” Her warm and caring nature made her a beloved friend to many, and she will be dearly missed by all who knew her. She will forever be remembered for her kindness, intelligence, sense of humor, and vibrant spirit. Brenda never met a stranger. She enjoyed attending both the Methodist and Catholic churches. Her faith provided her with strength and comfort during challenging times. Brenda Ann McKinney’s memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew her.

She is survived by her siblings, Brice (Cheryl), Bruce, Brad (Connie), and Bridget (Vito), and her honorary family, Nancy Miller, Myra, Lance, Kent, and Naomi Hasselblad, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a wide circle of close and wonderful friends.

Brenda was preceded in death by her parents, nephew, Matt McKinney, and her sister-in-law, Brenda Joyce McKinney, along with many dear friends.

A special thank you to all the caregivers for their loving and compassionate care of Brenda, and to those who were able to visit Brenda these past 4 months. Instead of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Dubuque in her memory. We will never forget her great smile, infectious laugh, hugs, wonderful stories, zest for life, and love for Jesus. Brenda always felt blessed and was thankful for her family, friends, and church. We are all better people because of Brenda. May we always remember Brenda’s spirit and never forget to give that extra TIGHT hug, followed by a hearty laugh.

Sr. Theresa Jungers

Sister Theresa (Rita Ann) Jungers, OSF, 85, of Dubuque, died Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at the Clare House in Dubuque.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Clare House Chapel, Mount St. Francis Center at 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 22, 2024. Masks are optional. Guests unable to attend may participate via livestream at: www.youtube.com/dubuquefranciscans. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Theresa was born July 10, 1938  in Hospers, IA, to William and Petronella (Stapenhorst) Jungers.

Theresa entered the Sisters of St. Francis September 3, 1960 and made final profession of vows August 12, 1968. Sister received her master’s degree in reading from Clarke College, Dubuque, IA. She ministered as a teacher in Illinois at North Riverside and Niles. Other missions included Sheldon, Iowa, Mount St. Francis Center, Dubuque, Iowa, and St. Louis, Missouri.

Sister is survived by her sister, Ellen Vortherms; her brothers Arnold ‘Arnie’ (Roberta ‘Bobbi’) Jungers and Daniel (Phyllis) Jungers; a sister-in-law Marlene Jungers; nieces, nephews, and her Franciscan sisters.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Sister Margaret Jungers, OSF; brother, Bernie Jungers, and brother-in-law Sylvester Vortherms.

Rick Becker

Rick Becker, 73, of Peosta, died Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory.

The Funeral Service for Rick will be at 10:30 am on Thursday, January 25, 2024, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory with Rev. Dianne Grace officiating. Burial will be at Linwood Cemetery in Dubuque.

Rick was born April 5, 1950, in Dubuque, IA, the son of William and Pearl (Drexel) Becker. On June 2, 1972, he married Mary Jo Capesius at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in La Motte. She preceded him in death on September 16, 1995. Rick graduated from Senior High School and went on to work at John Deere Dubuque Works for 30 years, retiring in 2001. Rick’s favorite pastimes were golfing, woodworking, and gardening.

Survivors include his daughter, Stacey Becker-Amundson and her two children, Brody and Piper Amundson; two brothers, Randy and Jake Becker; and nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two siblings and one sister-in-law.

Stephanie L. Eline

Stephanie Lynne Eline, 43, of Bettendorf, formerly of Dubuque died Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at Luther Manor Grand Meadows in Asbury following a short illness.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 am until 10:45 am on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at Church of the Resurrection, 4300 Asbury Rd. Dubuque.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Stephanie will be at 11:00 am on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at Church of the Resurrection with Father Phil Gibbs as the Celebrant and Father Dennis Quint as the Concelebrant. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery, Dubuque.

Stephanie was born April 24, 1980, in Dubuque, IA, the daughter of Jeffery John and Janice Mae (Vaske) Bahl. On July 3, 2010, she was united in marriage to James “Jim” Eline in Dubuque. She graduated from Wahlert High School in 1998.

Stephanie was a member of Church of the Resurrection in Dubuque and St. John Vianney in Bettendorf. She loved baking, sunflowers, talking with people, and traveling, especially to the ocean. She and Jim always made sure the kids went on trips with them also.  She loved dolphins and even got to swim with dolphins on her honeymoon.  She loved the colors of the ocean but her favorite color was purple.  She enjoyed her cats Tim and Eric.  Stephanie’s main focus was family. She was an excellent god mother, always kept track of family traditions, knew all of the birthdays, never missed a family function and was always the last to leave. Above all else, she enjoyed being a mom.

Survivors include her husband, Jim Eline of Bettendorf, IA; two children, Leo and Elisabeth Eline; four brothers, Josh (Sara) Bahl of Asbury, IA; Jonathan (Kayla) Bahl of Maquoketa, IA; Justin (Molly) Bahl of Bernard, IA; and Jacob (Nicole) Bahl of Dubuque, IA; 17 nieces and nephews, Shawn, Ryan, and Willa Eline, Emily, Luke, Lindsey, Sam, Harper, Hudson, Jonny, Jetlyn, Lillian, Joseph, Calvin, George, Arthur, and Winston Bahl;  her mother-in-law, Lucia Eline of Littleton, CO; two brothers-in-law, Andrew (Sarah) Eline of Littleton, CO and Christopher Eline of Granby, CO; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; father-in-law, Leonard Eline; her godfather, Terry Bahl; and an uncle, Mark Monaghan.

Glen E. Glasgow

Glen E. Glasgow, 62, of East Dubuque, IL, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, January 14, 2024, at Mercy One Dubuque Medical Center.

Visitation will be from 4 – 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 23, 2023, at the Miller Funeral Home in East Dubuque. A celebration of life will be held later.

Glen was born on March 11, 1961, in Trenton, Michigan, the son of Dwight E. and Patricia L. (Burroughs) Glasgow.

Glen was a team leader at Andersen Window and Door Company in Dubuque, where he was set to retire on March 11, 2024. He loved playing cards, especially euchre and cribbage, was an avid football fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Surviving are three children, Rob (Joyce) Jacques of Southgate, MI, Ami (Ted) Hinderman of Hazel Green, WI, and Travis (Samanatha) Glasgow of Galena, IL; seven grandchildren, Ryan, Brooke, Bryli, Piper, Ida, Eli and Liam; a sister, Peggy (Gary) Carpenter of Eagle Rock, MO; four nephews and three nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dwight, and Patricia.

Shirley J. Jahncke

Shirley Jean Jahncke, 96 of Galena, IL passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 14, 2024, at Galena Midwest Senior Care Community Center. The funeral service will be held at 11 AM, Monday, January 22, 2024, at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena. Friends may call from 2 to 4 PM, on Sunday, January 21, 2024, at the Furlong Funeral Chapel. The burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Galena.

She was born May 19, 1927, in Galena, the daughter of George and Gladys (Coates) Herman. Shirley graduated from Galena High School with the class of 1945 and Bayliss Business College in Dubuque in 1946. She was united in marriage to John E. Jahncke on May 20, 1950, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Galena and he preceded her in death on April 2, 1965. Shirley was the oldest living member of the First Presbyterian Church and served as secretary, sang in the choir, and taught Sunday school. Shirley was also a member of the Rebekka Lodge and the VFW Women’s Auxiliary. Her claim to fame was being voted as Galena’s Mardi Gras Queen. But her true calling was working with and teaching special needs children, which she did for 23 years. Shirley’s greatest joy was her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She never hesitated to share with anyone who would listen how proud she was of all of them.

She is survived by her four children, Susan (Robert) Tierney, William (Susan) Jahncke, Jane (Richard) O’Brien, Thomas (Nancy) Jahncke; son-in-law Paul Herbert, ten grandchildren, Ellen and Sally Herbert, Kristy Patterson, Bruce and Katie Jahncke, John, Jake, and Jeff O’Brien, John and Anna Jahncke, and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter Nancy, her son Richard, and her siblings, Robert, Richard, Marcella, Jane, and Kenneth.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Dubuque, especially Becky, and Amber, for their compassion and care for Mom. A very special and heartfelt thank you to the many angels at the Galena Midwest Senior Care Community Center. Words cannot express our gratitude for all the help, compassion, and comfort you provided Mom during her time there. You made her feel loved and cared for and we are eternally grateful.

Sandra J. Schulte

Sandra J. Schulte, age 53, of Waterloo, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday January 13, 2024.  To honor Sandy’s life private family services were held.  Following cremation, burial will be in Linwood Cemetery at a later date.  Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street is assisting Sandy’s family.

Sandy was born on April 5, 1970, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Robert J. and Mary L. (Phillips) Schulte.

Sandy attended Holy Ghost Grade School and Hempstead High School, graduating Class of 1988.  After high school Sandy worked at the Big 10 Mart and as a CNA caring for special needs children.  In the late 90’s she moved to Waterloo where she was employed with the Target Distribution Center in Cedar Falls for 23 years.  She was married to Rick Fourtner in December of 2010, in Waterloo, but sadly he passed away after a battle with cancer.  In her free time Sandy could often be found shooting pool or darts and hitting the open road with Rick on his Harley Davidson.  Sandy liked to travel and often headed out West to Sturgis with Rick.  Sandy, her mom, her sister and her aunts always did a yearly girls trip with their last big trip being to Door County.  She was also an avid Chicago Blackhawks fan.  We are deeply saddened at the loss of Sandy so suddenly.  We will miss her tremendously!
