Urban J. Manternach

Urban Joseph Manternach, 84, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at River Bend Retirement Community in Cascade.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday April 3rd, 2024 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road Dubuque, where a wake service will be at 3:45 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 4th, at St. Matthias Catholic Church in Cascade with Fr. Mark Osterhaus officiating. Additional visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. Thursday at the church.  The burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque.

Urban was born December 2, 1939 to Clem and Mary (Gudenkauf) Manternach in Cascade, Iowa.  He received his education from the former St. Mary’s School in Cascade.  He was united in marriage to his high-school sweetheart, Linda McGovern, daughter of George and Ella (Brun) McGovern on October 21, 1961 at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Cascade, Iowa.  Together they had four children.

Urban spent the majority of his career employed by John Deere Dubuque Works until he retired.  He served several years on the Board of Directors for DuTrac Community Credit Union.  He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus in Dubuque.  He was a loving father and grandfather that cherished spending time with his loved ones at all the family gatherings from Holidays to Sunday dinners. He really enjoyed the trips to Las Vegas with his brothers and the occasional glass of Crown Royal.  Urban spent a lot of his free time, after retirement, at the Q Casino where all the staff knew him by name.

He is survived by his spouse, Linda Manternach of Dubuque, Iowa; four children, Beth (Paul) Hayungs of Eldridge, Chris (Donna) Manternach, of Dubuque, Nina (Tom) Siegworth of Dubuque, Dede (Jason) McDermott of Peosta; twelve grandchildren, Sarah (Ryan) Hackbarth , Emily (Brad) Meyer, Kayla (Brian) Price, Adam Manternach, Chad Manternach, Sam (Katie) McDermott, Anthony (Tabitha) Siegworth, Rachel (Sean Flynn) McDermott, Rebecca McDermott, Alex Hayungs, Nathan Siegworth, and Anna McDermott; seven great-grandchildren;  four siblings, Phil (Nikki) Manternach of Cascade, Donna Reisberg of Dyersville, Marilyn (Steve) Skahill of East Dubuque, IL., Carol Dolan of Dubuque; brothers and sisters-in-law, Pat McQuillen of Cascade, Lois Manternach of Worthington and in-laws from the McGovern family, Sr. Ann McGovern, Joan (Gerry) Otting, Betty Leibold, Bob (Cheryl) McGovern.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Delores McQuillen and Lloyd Manternach; brother and sister in-laws Ellen Manternach, Pete Dolan, Don Reisberg, Buddy (Georgine) McGovern,  Jackie (Buddy) Trumm, Donna (Merlyn) Reinke, Louie Leibold, Faith (Bob) Kelly, Tommy McGovern, Marie (Ken) Green.

The family would like to thank the River Bend nurses and staff, as well as, the staff from the Hospice of Dubuque for all their care, love and support.

Pamela J. Burns

Pamela J. Burns, 76, of Zwingle, Iowa, passed away on March 27, 2024, peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family.

Friends and family may visit from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday April 2, 2024, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, with a Wake Service starting at 3:45 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday April 3, at Holy Family Catholic Church New Melleray, 16318 Holy Family Lane, with Monsignor Thomas Toale officiating. Burial will follow in the church’s cemetery.

Pamela was born on September 20, 1947, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Francis and Esther (Wachendorf) Frick. She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School class of 1965. She was united in marriage to her husband, Terrence F. Burns, on February 17, 1973, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dubuque. She worked for Collin’s Radio in Cedar Rapids.

Pamela’s greatest pride and joy was her family. She was incredibly proud of her granddaughters and was happy to meet her great granddaughter. Her family will always remember her love. Pamela is survived by her husband Terry, daughter Kristi Kramer, granddaughters Brianna (Jack) Nelson of Peosta and Alexis Kramer of Dyersville, great granddaughter Violet Nelson, and brothers Jim Frick, Tom (Michele) Frick, and Jeff Frick.

She was preceded in death by her parents Francis and Esther, parents-in-law Jerry and Adele Burns, sister Ivadell (Bill) Brehm, and brother Dave (Sue) Frick.

Francis A. Marshall

Francis A. “Frank” Marshall, 74, of Bernard, Iowa formerly of Dubuque passed away on March 24, 2024, at home surrounded by his loved ones.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 5, 2024, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at the funeral home with Deacon David Roth officiating.

Frank was born on May 4, 1949, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Alvin and Verna (Hingtgen) Marshall. He married Jean Carner on December 10, 1968, in East Dubuque, IL.

Frank was an equipment operator for 39 years for the City of Dubuque. He was an avid bowler, enjoyed playing euchre and fishing with the kids.

He is survived by his wife Jean; children: Bobbie (Jerry) Hogge of Hopkin, IA, Frank Marshall Jr. of Bernard-Leisure Lake, IA, Richard (Selina) Marshall of Bernard-Leisure Lake, IA, Penney (Jim) Walker of Vincennes, IN, Heather (Mike) Mast of Manchester, and Carla (Scott) Steiert of Bernard-Leisure Lake, IA. 20 grandchildren: 27 great grandchildren. His siblings: Diane Colson of Linden, WI, Patricia Marshall-Scales, of Richland Center, WI, Pam Schmitt of Dubuque, Richard (Sara) Watson of Belews Creek, NC, Roxanne (Ron) Kinsella of Dubuque, Kevin Marshall of St. Donatus and Jimmie (Carolyn Stierman) Marshall of LaMotte.  Along with many nieces, nephews, aunts and in-laws.

Frank was preceded by his parents; stepmother, Shirley; 2 grandchildren, Mikey Mast & Hannah Marshall; siblings, Dale Marshall, Gregory Watson, and Carol Jean Marshall.

In lieu of flowers a Frank Marshall memorial fund will be established.

Bernice E. Thole

Bernice E. Thole, 95, of Dyersville, Iowa died Friday, March 29, 2024, at her home surrounded by family.

Visitation will be held 2 – 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville.  Visitation will continue from 9 – 10:30 a.m., at Kramer Funeral Home prior to funeral services.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 4, 2024, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, Iowa with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Chris Podhajsky will officiate with Rev. Douglas Loecke concelebrating.

Bernice was born April 13, 1928, in Holy Cross, Iowa the daughter of Anthony and Ottillia (Loecke) Hellmann.  She married Charles “Chuck” Thole on September 7, 1948 in Holy Cross, Iowa. They owned and operated their farm near Petersburg for 42 years and were members of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. They were members of the Delaware County Pork Producers and were 4H Leaders. Bernice baked and decorated wedding cakes for 35 years. She always was proud that she made all her cakes from scratch, not using mixes. She designed and made a special birthday cake for every grandchild growing up until the age of 12. She taught cake decorating classes for a few years at Western Dubuque, sharing her talent.

After Bernice and Chuck retired, they moved to Dyersville. She retired from cake decorating, selling her mixers, ovens, and equipment to a local baker. Charles and Bernice became involved with volunteering their time with the Food Pantry, serving for over 20 years. In 1995, they were nominated and honored with an award of appreciation by Governor Branstad at the Iowa Capitol. They were members of St. Francis Xavier Basilica church where they donated time to help wherever it was needed. Charles preceded her in death on December 23, 1996.

Bernice continued her volunteering at the Food Pantry as well as working in church each week, cleaning, setting up for mass, laundry, sewing needs, and as she would say, “Whatever needed to be done.”

She worked with the Layette group making and packing layettes for newborns and later quilted with the ladies. She designed and pieced over 50 military quilts while working at the Layette. She was a member of the Mercy Auxiliary for many years as well. Sewing, quilting, and baking were her favorite hobbies. She made a special quilt for all of her children and grandchildren as a wedding heirloom gift to treasure, and a baby quilt for all of her great-grandchildren when they were born.

In 2008, the Dyersville Chamber honored her with the Woman of the Year award for her volunteer work in the community. Her number one priority was her Faith and Family. Her devotion to her husband and family was evident in all she did. She will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her 5 children: Madonna (Charles) Wilhelm, Nancy (Gary) Mensen, Ronald (Susan) Thole all of Dyersville, Robert (DeAnn) Thole of Carlile, Wyoming, Gary (Christine) Thole of Grove, Oklahoma; 17 grandchildren; 31great-grandchildren; siblings:  Charles (Mary) Hellmann of Holy Cross, Cletus (Correne) Hellmann of Ryan, Eileen (Ed) Prier of Dyersville; a sister-in-law, Eileen Hellmann of Ryan.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles in 1996, son, Daniel (in infancy); granddaughter, Tiffany Jo Mensen; siblings: Germaine (John) Langel, Ambrose Hellmann, Delores (Dave) Putz; and several in-laws.

As a family, we are grateful for the loving care, friendship, and compassion she received from family and friends. Bernice’s family would also like to express their heartfelt appreciation for the staff of Hospice of Dubuque, especially Kris O., Nicole, Morgan, and Buffy. We thank you for the comfort you gave our mother and to us in her final days.

Robert F. Brehm

Robert F. Brehm, 83, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on March 26, 2024, peacefully at home.

Private family services will be held with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road is assisting the family.

Robert was born on July 23, 1940, on the family farm in Durango, Iowa, son of Adam F. and Anna (Stoffel) Brehm. He attended school in Rickardsville, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Janice Winner on October 20, 1962, at St. Columbkille’s Catholic Church in Dubuque, Iowa. He enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson with his motorcycle group.

Robert was briefly employed at the Dubuque Packing Co. before purchasing the family farm. After retiring from farming, he worked at Bernard Livestock. Robert also honorably served his country in the Army National Guard from 1959 to 1965.

He was a hard worker, and the first to lend a helping hand to anyone. Family was his main passion, but a close second was riding his Harley. He was a chocoholic and could be found eating chocolate ice cream in the middle of the night. He was well known in the Rickardsville/Durango community and will be remembered for being a survivor of many death-defying misadventures.

Those left to remember him are his wife Janice; 8 children, Michelle (Duane) Koopman of Newhall, IA; Kelly (Krambeck) of Cedar Rapids, IA; Troy (Tina), Dean (Kat), Dennis (Brenda), Cody, all of Durango, IA; and Melanie (Mike) Fenner of Simpsonville, KY; daughter-in-law Megan Brehm of Dubuque, Iowa. He also had 28 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.

Robert was preceded in death by his son Shane Brehm, parents Adam and Anna, and brothers Lawrence and Clarence Brehm.

Jerry Brown

Jerry Brown, 73 of Monona Iowa passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on March 27 2024 at Gundersen Health System in LaCrosse Wisconsin, from complications of COPD/Emphysema. 

Jerry was born on June 24 1950 to parents, John and Ella (Noble) Brown in Guttenberg Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Monona. Jerry graduated from MFL in 1968. He married Celia Burkhalter in 1971 at St Peters Lutheran Church in Prairie du Chien Wisconsin. To this union two daughters were born, Teresa and Kimberly of whom he was very proud. 

He worked as a mechanic at Lestina Standard, Huinker Chevrolet and Birdnow Chevrolet. Jerry was a true outdoorsman, he loved hunting with his nephews, fishing with his grandchildren and Celia, metal detecting, cutting wood and mushroom hunting. He also liked gardening and mowing his lawn. He loved working on cars, often times helping a complete stranger on the side of the road. To quote him “ It was the right thing to do “. He also loved his Iowa Hawkeyes and everything about Iowa City, including the Stead Family Childrens Hospital where his Grandson was cured of leukemia. Jerry loved watching game shows and working on jigsaw puzzles. He loved going to his grandchildren’s activities and just being with them, Jerry was so very proud of his grandchildren. He is sadly missed by his family and many friends. 

Jerry is survived by his wife of 53 years, Celia Brown; his daughters, Teresa (Jeff) Schlichte and Kimberly (Andy) Lee; grandchildren, Natalie Schlichte, Isaac Lee, Aubrey Schlichte and Caleb Lee; sisters, Judy Benzing and Jan Snitker; sisters-in-law, Carolyn Brown, Jeanne Brown and Linda Burkhalter; brothers-in-law, Marvin Burkhalter and Larry Burkhalter and several nieces and nephews. 

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; mother-in- law, Vera Burkhalter; brothers, Jack Brown and Joel Brown; brothers-in -law, Ronnie Benzing, Rick Snitker and Tony Burkhalter; sisters -in -law, Ellen Burkhalter and Carolyn Burkhalter; nieces, Lynda Burkhalter, Karen (Burkhalter) Bauer, Cathy (Burkhalter) Chicola and great niece, Taylor Nichole Benzing.

A Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Monday, April 1, 2024 at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Monona, Iowa.

A Funeral Service will be at 11:00 am on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona, Iowa with Rev. Erika Lenth as the officiant.

Inurnment will follow at the Monona City Cemetery, Monona, Iowa.

Beverly V. Brandt

Beverly Verneal Brandt, 93, of Galena, IL, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, March 26, 2024, at Midwest Senior Care Center, Galena, surrounded by her wonderful and loving family.

A funeral service will be held at Noon on Thursday, April 4, 2024, at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena where friends may call after 10:00 AM until the time of service. The burial is in Greenwood Cemetery, Galena.

She was born on November 2, 1930, in Elizabeth, IL, the daughter of Benjamin and Carrie (Gugler) Menzemer. Beverly grew up with her four brothers and three sisters on the family farm.

She married Eldon Brandt on July 9, 1949, at the Schapville Zion Lutheran Church, and he preceded her in death on October 29, 1988. They lived on the Brandt family farm until 1960 when they moved to Galena and raised seven children.

Beverly worked at the EATON Corp., Hanover, IL, for thirty years. She retired in 1995 and stayed busy helping with her many grandkids. Beverly loved to listen to music and go dancing and could be found attending the many events held at Turner Hall. She enjoyed reading books, playing a good hand of euchre, collecting spoons, bells, cardinals, and putzing around her flower beds. Baking cookies and zucchini bread for her children and grandchildren was a great joy. Also, she could be found raking the leaves constantly, even though she had no trees in her yard. Beverly, a devout churchgoer, was a St. Matthew Lutheran Church member in Galena. In fact, she was the oldest member of the congregation until God called her home.

She is survived by her seven children: Richard (Doris) Brandt of Galena; Vicki Harrington of Nowata, OK; Robin (Lee) Buss of Galena; Dana (Barb) Brandt of Dubuque, IA; Dean Brandt of Dubuque, IA; Colleen (Tony Bausch) Brandt of Lancaster, WI, and Renee (Mike) Kroencke of Galena, seventeen grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren: one brother, Calvin (Marilyn) Menzemer of Elizabeth, and two sisters-in-law, Hilda Holland of Kent, WA, and Dee Menzemer of Hazel Green, WI, and many nieces and nephews.

Beverly was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and daughter, Sheila, and grandson, Seth Stadler, and great-grandson, Jacob Elias; three brothers, Blanchard, Marvin, and Kermit; and three sisters, Velma, Vivian, and Deloris. Also, in-laws, Doris Menzemer, Donna Menzemer Hintz, Roy Downs, Roland Root, Bill Brandt, Lenora and Donald Root, and Robert “Pat” Holland.

The family would like to thank the Midwest Senior Care Center staff for their excellent care and Hospice of Dubuque.

Leona J. Becker

Leona Jean “Sis” Becker, 75, of Dubuque, died Monday, March 25, 2024, at the Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque.

The Funeral Service for Leona will be 10:00 am Saturday, March 30, 2024, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory. Burial will be in East Dubuque Cemetery, East Dubuque.

Leona was born August 31, 1948, in Dubuque, the daughter of Theodore and Virginia (Neuhaus) Heyne.

Sis loved playing bingo, she enjoyed a good game of euchre, and had a great fondness for animals, gardening, and family gatherings.

Survivors include one son, Christopher Kruse of Dubuque; one daughter, Kelly (Brian Houston) Oglesby of Adel; three grandchildren, Dakota, Nicole, and Kylee; and five great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, twin daughters, Jamie Lee and Nicole Lee Kruse and one brother, Ted.

Steven Bartmann, Sr.

Steven Bartmann Sr., 77, of Dubuque, died Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at the Unity Point Health-Finley Hospital in Dubuque.

Visitation will be from 9:00 am until 9:45 am on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory.

The Funeral Service for Steven will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory with Rev. Thomas C Shinkle officiating. Full military honors will be rendered by the American Legion Post #6.

Steven was born January 31, 1947, in Cuba City, WI, the son of Joseph and Nadine (Bradley) Bartmann. He was married to Barbara (Kies) Olson and she preceded him in death on July 28, 2001. On May 5, 2007, he married Julie Ann (Barklow) at the Dubuque Arboretum.

Steven was proud to have served in the United States Army from 1965 to 1967.

In his free time, Steven enjoyed motorcycling, camping, photography, and spending time with his family and beloved dog, Dexter.

Survivors include his wife, Julie Bartmann of Dubuque; four children, Tim (Staci) Olson of Fort Dodge, IA; Robert (Elizabeth) Olson of Waukee, IA; Suzanne (Ken) Link of New Hope, MN; and Lori (Kelly Ries) Wheeler of Barnum, IA; daughter-in-law, Tracey (Rob) Leek of St. Louis, MO; 11 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Raymond, John, Annette, Rhonda, Patty, Mark, and Brian; his mother-in-law, Dixie Husemann; sister-in-law, Theresa (Clint) Moore; brother-in-law, Larry (Brenda) Husemann; his beloved dog, Dexter; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Steven was preceded in death by two sons, Steve D. Bartmann II  and Scott David Bartmann; and four brothers, Dennis, Larry, Ronnie, and Gary.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.

Joyce A. Leubka

Joyce A. Leubka, age 69, of Dubuque, IA, completed her earthly journey on March 25, 2024.  To honor Joyce’s life, a private family service will be held at a later date..  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Joyce’s family.

Joyce was born on November 3, 1954, in Dubuque, IA, a daughter to Lester (Ruby) Leubka.  She eventually made her way into the banking world and spent many years, in many towns around the country, serving the customers as best she could.  Joyce was most recently working as a cashier at the Q Casino until her health issues became more than she could manage with work as well.  Joyce enjoyed visiting and socializing with her friends whenever possible and she was always sure to give her two cents if the conversation required a little extra commentary.  We will miss Joyce more than she could possibly know and are forever grateful for the good memories she leaves behind.  May the Lord grant you peace from your earthly battles now and keep you safe in His grace-filled arms until we all meet again.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents.

Gordon J. Neumann

Gordon J. Neumann, 88, of Dubuque, died Monday, March 25, 2024, at Eagle Pointe Place in Dubuque.

Gordon was born September 14, 1935, in Holy Cross Iowa, son of William and Kathryn Neumann.  Gordy (Bud) grew up in a farming community and graduated from Holy Cross Leo in a class of 13 students.

He went into the Army from 1955-1957, he was station in Seattle Washington, here he served as the colonel’s primary driver and played on the basketball team. After his service he came home, with lots of stories.

When he returned from the army, he met Rosemary Nieland.  They wed in 1960, raised three children, and were married for 58 years before she passed in 2018.

Gordy worked over 40 years at the Dubuque Packing Company in various departments, finishing his career as a supervisor before retiring.  He went on to drive a school bus for the Dubuque Community School District.  He really enjoyed those kids.  After retiring from bus driving, he delivered trucks for the McCoy group and loved to share stories about his time behind the wheel.

Gordy was an avid sports fan and played basketball and baseball.  He carried his love of sports throughout his life.  He loved to spend time attending his kids and grandkids sporting events. He spent time with his grandkids on the Mississippi River teaching them to fish and spending quality time together.   Gordy also liked to hunt. While his two daughters didn’t seem to get the “quiet in the woods” his son Kyle picked up this passion and has carried the family tradition on with his son. Gordy loved to hear how they did and would often meet them and his son-in-law after the hunt to help cut up the deer and tell stories. 

Gordy also had a passion for woodworking.  He loved his “shop” in the back yard. He was so happy when the “guys” built that for him, even though it almost took “T” air born.   It was a place for him to take his grandchildren to teach them things. Those kids mellowed him out and he loved spending time with them. He never once yelled at them for “pinching the board” while he was cutting it on his table saw. And of course, he had to tell his grandkids all his stories.

Through the years Gordy and Rosie were involved in a lot of clubs and activities. They bowled, they belonged to the KC’s, they fished, they took family vacations every year. They made a lot of friends, but most of all they cherished the time with their families. Every year the family would vacation somewhere, Rosie sat back and listened, Gordy sat back with his cooler, everyone else ran around like crazy people and all doing exactly what Gordy liked best, creating new stories.

Gordy didn’t enjoy many things more than a cold beer and telling a story or two.  He really enjoyed spreading these stories at the Moose and the Legion and made many friends at both clubs.  Bartending at the Moose was one of his favorite things to do in his later years. If you were ever around the Neumann boys you knew you were in for a good cold drink, a good story and a lot of laughs. Dad loved spending time with his brothers and their families. Every holiday was special with the Neumanns, a lot of memories and new stories.

Gordy was preceded in death by his wife, Rosemary Neumann, his parents, William and Kathryn Neumann and in-laws, Bernard & Magdalena Nieland, brothers-in-law Lavern (Coletta) Nieland, Elmer (Adel) Nieland, Ray Nieland and sister-in-law Armella (Kenny) Nieland. 

Those left to cherish his memory are his children Dawne (Joe) O’Meara, Michelle (Wayne) Schnier, Kyle (Kelly) Neumann. Grandchildren Josh (Alice) Habel, Monica (Bart) Sitarski, Ryan Schnier, Tyler (Lauren) Neumann, & Amanda (Tyler) Menhusen.   Great-grandchildren: Charlie Gordon & Edith Habel, Sophia & Lukas Sitarski, Avery Schnier, Raylan & Crosby Neumann, & Meredith, Everett & Liam Menhusen.  His brothers: Richard Neumann, Gene (Kay) Neumann, & Jim (Bev) Neumann & the amazing Neumann nieces & nephews and their families.  Also, many Nieland cousins and their families.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Dubuque and the staff at Trustwell Living at Eagle Point Care Facility where the girls treated him like family and brought many smiles to his face.   

Dad, we are going to miss you until we see you again in the heavens, keep the beer cold and we will continue the laughter and the stories.

Neale R. Keeney

Neale R. Keeney, 70, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, March 23, 2024, at home.

Neale Roger Keeney was born on January 21, 1954 in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Reynolds Owen and Onalee (Paulsen) Keeney.  From his early days growing up in Andrew and later in Elwood, Neale was  a proud graduate of Delwood High School in 1972.  He furthered his education at AIC in Davenport, Iowa, where he honed his skills in Accounting and Systems Analysis.

Neale’s professional life began at Alcoa.  He also worked tirelessly on the family farm for approximately 15 years. His dedication to the land and his community was evident to all who knew him. In 1982, he took a position with Hormel/PB Leiner in the Quad Cities, where he remained until his well-deserved retirement in 2014.

Beyond his work, Neale enjoyed woodworking.  His faith played a central role in who he was. An active member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Maquoketa, Neale served his congregation with humility and joy. He took on many volunteer roles, including administrative duties where he served as the Account and Literature Servant.

Neale’s legacy is carried on by his loving family, who will continue to honor his memory. He is survived by his children, Terra (Michael) Stoeffler of East Dubuque, IL, Jason Keeney of St. Joseph, MO, and Tiffany (Tyson) Vorderstrasse of St. Joseph, MO. His mother, Onalee Keeney of Maquoketa, IA, and his brothers, Larry (Sherry) Keeney of Elwood, IA, and John (Julie) Keeney of Maquoketa, IA, also survive him. Neale was a proud grandfather to five grandchildren, Morgan, Cole, Elaine, Claire, and Kyle, and a great-grandfather to two great-grandchildren, Navey and Prudence. His extended family includes numerous nieces and nephews, each of whom held a special place in his heart. 

He was preceded in death by his father, Reynolds Keeney, who passed away on March 9, 2006.

A celebration of his life will be held at 1 P.M., Monday, April 1, 2024, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.  Visitation will be held prior to the funeral from 11 A.M. to 12:45 P.M. at the funeral home.  Burial will be at the Andrew, Iowa Cemetery.

Anna Mae V. Kieffer

Anna Mae V. Kieffer, age 89, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away at 2:35 p.m., on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at Ennoble Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation with her loving family by her side.  In keeping with Ann’s wishes burial will be held in the St. Donatus Cemetery at a later date.  Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street is assisting Anna Mae’s family.

Ann was born on September 30, 1934, in Dyersville, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Josephine (Jaeger) Schlarmann. 

Ann was united in marriage to Loras Kieffer on June 2, 1956, in Bellevue, Iowa.  The couple were blessed with 5 children and celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary last year.  Ann was an extremely devoted wife and mom who took great pride in caring for her family and home.  She was a great cook and baker who made every family meal special with candles and conversation about the events of the day.  She cared for her extended family as well, nothing was more important to her than making sure everyone had what they needed.  Ann loved traveling, with some her favorite destinations being Hawaii and Florida.  She and Loras also had a lake home in Morrison, Illinois and would head down every weekend to spend time with their friends.  She loved being outside tending to her garden and flower beds and putting together jigsaw puzzles.  Ann was a very special lady who was very loved and will be deeply missed.

Those left to cherish Ann’s memory include: her devoted husband, Loras Kieffer, Dubuque, IA; her children, Jeffery (Carol) Kieffer, Dubuque, IA, Karla (Dennis) Krapfl, Dubuque, IA, Kimberly (Jeffery) Lippstock, Dubuque, IA, and Todd (Kelly) Kieffer, Waterloo, IA; 9 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; and her in-laws, Francis (Sandy) Kieffer, Hawaii.

Ann was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter in infancy; her siblings, Rose Schlarmann in infancy, Delores and her 3 husbands, Gregor Tegeler, Hubert Geistkemper and Edmund Duetmeyer, Louis (Mary) Schlarmann, Clarence (Malita) Schlarmann, Jerome (Rita) Schlarmann, Cletus Schlarmann, Robert Schlarmann, Eugene (Imelda) Schlarmann and Joseph (Madeline) Schlarmann; and her in-laws, Rosemary, Norita, Raphael, Ronald, Vertis, Vernard and Marvin.

Ann’s family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Ennoble Manor and Care Initiatives Hospice for the care they have provided these past weeks.

Russell A. Pope

Russell A. “Russ” Pope, age 48, of Dubuque, passed away at 6:35 p.m., on Friday, March 22, 2024, at MercyOne Dubuque. To honor Russ’s life private services were held. Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street is assisting the family.

Russell was born on November 30, 1975, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Donald and Nancy (Blum) Pope. 

He was married to Kimberly Fry in 2008. Sadly they decided to part ways, but still remained friends. Russ had many hobbies and interests including reading, listening to rock music and watching sports.  He also enjoyed cooking and sharing whatever he made with family and friends.  Russ was an excellent chef who worked at several places throughout his career including Carlos O’Kelley’s and most recently Casey’s on Peru Road. Russ made fantastic sweets and his chili was literally award winning!  He also liked being in the great outdoors, especially if it involved finding a good fishing hole. Russ was a jokester and loved to have fun no matter what he was doing. He liked to spend time with his friends sharing an ice cold beverage and some good conversation.

Arlene R. Henneberry

Arlene R. Henneberry, 86, of Cascade, Iowa, formerly of Bernard, Iowa, passed away on Palm Sunday, March 24, 2024, at home surrounded by her loving family.

Friends and family may visit from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday April 1, 2024, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, with a family wake service and rosary to be held at 3:30 p.m. Additional visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday starting at 9:00 a.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday April 2, 2024, at St. Patrick Garryowen Catholic Church in Bernard, Iowa with Father Mark Osterhaus officiating.  The burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Arlene was born on April 4, 1937, in Dubuque County, daughter of Vern A. and Rita P. (Donovan) McCarthy.  She was united in marriage to her husband Richard P. Henneberry on September 14, 1957, at St. Patrick Church, Garryowen and together they had nine children.  They lived on Richard’s family’s Jackson County Seven Generation Farm that was established in 1845 before moving to Cascade in 2002.

She was a member of St. Patick’s Rosary Society, Christ the King Mother’s Club, Power of Prayer, a founding member of Cascade Area Right to Life established in 1989, Meals on Wheels and secretary of Aquin Parent Teacher Association.

Arlene attended one room school house in Dubuque and Jackson Counties and graduated high school at St. Patrick’s Garryowen.  She was a loving and dedicated wife, home-maker, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who cherished every moment of rocking babies.  She was in the sales division with Montgomery Wards and later with Younkers.  She and Richard cherished and remained close with their Garryowen classmates.  They loved to attend local dances whenever possible.

Arlene is survived by her children Beverly (Jake) Reiter of Cascade, Iowa, Tom (Linda) Henneberry of Robins, Iowa, Fred (Kathy) Henneberry of Dubuque, Iowa, Ron Henneberry of Cedar Rapids, Iowa,  Dave Henneberry of Burleson, Texas, Margie (Todd) Behrends of Amber, Iowa, Julie (Greg) Runde of East Dubuque, Illinois, Mark Henneberry of Dubuque, Iowa and Ryan (Tammy) Henneberry of Bernard, Iowa,  21 Grandchildren, Justin (Amber) Reiter, Stan (Samantha) Reiter and Hannah (Marty) Kelzer,  Conor Henneberry,  and Michaela Henneberry , Danny Henneberry (Melissa Gehl) and Lee Henneberry,  Abbie Henneberry,  Jayla Henneberry, Blake Henneberry and Vincent Henneberry,  Tony (Sonu) Merfeld,  Kiel   ( Emily) Merfeld,  Jenny Behrends  and Dani Behrends, Franchesca (Derek) Doty, Harrison Runde  and Ella Runde, Kyle (Emily) Merkes, Chloe Henneberry and Raylan Henneberry and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Richard, granddaughter Amelia Runde, her parents, brother Jack McCarthy and sisters Patricia O’Connell and Janeen Pape.
