Charles M. Ansel

Charles M. “Mike” Ansel, age 76, of Dubuque, passed away peacefully at 8:01 a.m., on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at Harmony Dubuque.  To honor Mike’s life, family and friends may visit from 2:30 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., on Sunday, December 10, 2023, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, where there will be a parish scripture wake service held at 2:00 p.m.  Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, December 11, 2023, at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Ghost Church, 2921 Central Avenue, with Rev. Jeff Frieden officiating.  Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery where full military honors will be accorded by the American Legion Dubuque Post 6 and the Tri-State Vietnam Veterans.

Mike was born on August 2, 1947, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Charles K. and Ruby I. (Oldner) Ansel.

Mike graduated from Dubuque Senior High School, Class of 1966.  In October of 1966, he began serving his country with the U.S. Army in the 198th Infantry Brigade, 1st Battalion 52nd Infantry Regiment in Vietnam.  He was honorably discharged in October of 1968, continuing to serve in the Reserves until 1976.  After returning home from the service, Mike attended Madison Area Technical College for electronics and would put the knowledge he attained to good use in his working career.  Mike was employed in the Experimental Division of John Deere Dubuque Works as a Mechanic/Electronic Technician for 40 years, retiring in 2010.  He was married to the love of his life, Linda Buelow, on May 1, 1971.  The couple has been truly blessed with 5 wonderful children and 52 years of married life together.  Mike was a very active member of his community.  He was a member of Holy Spirit Parish, the UAW Local 94, the Tri-State Vietnam Veterans, the American Legion Dubuque Post 6, the V.F.W. and the D.A.V.  He also volunteered at the Veterans Freedom Center, with Reflections in the Park and with the Jamestown Volunteer Fire Department in Kieler, Wisconsin for 15 years.  When Mike found some free time in his days he enjoyed attending athletic events watching his children, especially Women’s Rugby.  Mike was a history buff and took many family adventures across the country.  Some of his favorite trips were going to Colorado every year and an Alaskan cruise with Linda.  He was an avid skier and worked at Sundown Mountain as both a Ski Instructor and with Ski Patrol for several years.  Mike also liked to spend time on the river boating, was very active in canoe racing in the 1980’s and was instrumental in instilling a love of the outdoors in his children.  Mike regularly loaded up the canoes and kids for a trip to various rivers in the tri-state area.  He loved camping with his family and was active in the Boy Scout program as an Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 48.  Family was always his top priority and Mike was always taking care of everyone trying to make their lives easier.  Mike was an excellent role model, teaching what it means to put others before yourself.  He was reliable, steady and true, always standing up for what was right and fighting for those who could not fight for themselves.  Mike was deeply loved and will be greatly missed!

Lynn M. Hobbs

Lynn M. Remakel Hobbs, age 60, of Dubuque, Iowa passed peacefully surrounded by her loving family on November 30, 2023.

A celebration of life will take place on Thursday December 28, 2023 from 5pm-8pm at the Days Inn on Highway 20 in Dubuque, IA.

Lynn was born on September 21, 1963 in Dubuque, Iowa, she is the daughter of James and Elaine (Timmerman) Johnson. She grew up in Dubuque, IA and graduated from Dubuque Hempstead High School. Lynn married Jonathan Remakel in 1988. She worked at AY McDonald manufacturing company as an administrative assistant for many years before becoming a stay at home mother when her children were born. Lynn and Jonathan had 3 children together, Stephany, Hope and Andrew.

Many years later in 2009 she was remarried to John Hobbs while she was working in the service industry. Lynn liked to spend her time watching Bohemian Rhapsody and listening to Queen. She also liked to spend time with her family and doing various arts and crafts. She especially enjoyed crocheting and would crochet items for family and friends.

Lynn is survived by her husband, John Hobbs; her children, Stephany (Philip) Elking, Hope (Zach) Kracke and Andrew Remakel; grandchildren, Calvin and Maxwell Kracke, future baby Elking; siblings, Lori (Ben) Schoenberger, Lisa (Steve) Greenwood and Erik (Jen) Johnson and by her former husband, Jonathan Remakel. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and distant relatives that loved her very much.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Elaine Johnson.

Mary M. Legler

Mary M. Legler, 91, of East Dubuque, Illinois, formerly of rural Hazel Green, Wisconsin, passed away Monday, December 4, 2023. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church, Benton, Wisconsin. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends and family may call from 9-10:45 a.m. at the church prior to the service. Casey-McNett Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Cuba City is assisting the family.

Mary was born on April 1, 1932, the daughter of Vincent and Genevieve “Jane” (McKillip) Chadwick. She graduated from Hazel Green High School and earned her teaching certificate from Wisconsin State College of Platteville. Mary was united in marriage to John “Joe” Legler on June 11, 1955. He preceded her in death on November 13, 2011.

Mary taught in a one-room schoolhouse for several years before leaving to raise her two children and help Joe on the farm. She was a master seamstress, loved reading, and enjoyed crossword puzzles. Upon selling the dairy herd, Mary and Joe began traveling extensively throughout the United States and beyond.

Mary is survived by two children, Allan (Diane Miesbauer) Legler, Hartland, WI, and Rosemary (Gary) Keleher, Dubuque, IA; six grandchildren, Christopher (fiancée, Andrea) Legler, Danita (Steve) Legler, Allan M. (Crystal) Legler, Paula (Brandon) Duve, Peter (Riley) Keleher and Patrick Keleher; six great-grandsons; and one great-great-grandson.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; two siblings, Loren (Peg) Chadwick and Mazie (Orlie) Merfeld; and her sister-in-law, Martina (Bud) Runde.

Rev. Msgr. James O. Barta

The Rev. Msgr. James O. Barta, PhD., 92, died on Monday, December 4, 2023, in Dubuque, at Stonehill Health Center. A native of Fairfax, Iowa, he was born on October 22, 1931, to Omer and Bertha (Brecht) Barta.

Visitation for Monsignor Barta will be held on Friday, December 8 at Loras College, Christ the King Chapel from 3:00 – 6:30 p.m. with a vigil service at 6:30.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, December 9, 2023, at Loras College, Christ the King Chapel at 10:30 with Most Reverand Thomas Zinkula officiating and Rev. Ardel Barta as homilist.  A livestream of the funeral mass will be on Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory’s Facebook page.

Msgr. Barta will be laid to rest in the St. Patrick Cemetery, Fairfax, IA on Monday, December 11th, at 11:00 a.m.

Father Barta was ordained to the priesthood on December 17, 1955, at the North American College in Rome.  His first assignment was as associate pastor of St. Wenceslaus Parish, Cedar Rapids, where he served for a year before moving to Loras College where he would spend the next 37 years as a member of the faculty, Academic Dean, acting president and then for the final 7 years at Loras as its President.  During his early years at Loras he completed graduate studies at Fordham University.

In 1994, Archbishop Daniel Kucera appointed him the Episcopal Vicar for the Cedar Rapids Region of the Archdiocese, which he served at until 1999, when Archbishop Jerome Hanus appointed him Vicar General and Episcopal Vicar for the Dubuque Region.  He served as Vicar General and Episcopal Vicar until his retirement in 2009.  He was chaplain of Clarke College from 1972-1987. He also served as Chaplain of the Sister’s of the Blessed Virgin Mary (BVMs) from 1999 until 2009.

Father Barta was named a Prelate of Honor (Monsignor) by St. Pope John Paul II in 1987, and was made a Protonotary Apostolic in 2004.  He served the Archdiocese of Dubuque over the years on many boards, commissions and councils.

He was preceded in death by his parents Omer & Bertha; brother, Melvin (Mike) & Dorothy Barta, and sister, Arlene and Max Thompson.

Monsignor Barta is survived by his brother Ron (Darlene) Barta, of Hot Springs Village AR, and his brother Rev. Ardel Barta, of Dubuque; along with nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to “Catholic Charities of Dubuque”.

Kathleen Kuriger

Kathleen “Kathy” Kuriger, 84, of Dubuque, passed away December 3, 2023. Visitation will be held from 9:00-10:15a.m., Thursday, December 7th at the Church of the Nativity. Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow at 10:30a.m., with Msgr. James Miller officiating. Inurnment will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Monticello.

Kathy was born on January 31, 1939, to Bernard and Mary (Minnis) Kuriger in Monticello, IA. As a little girl she loved to sing and dance. She loved cars, especially her blue Mustang convertible, and taking frequent road trips. Kathy made friends easily and we are quite certain she was the original Chatty Kathy.

She attended nursing school at Mount Mercy in Cedar Rapids and according to her sister Mary Anne became a nurse because she loved people. After graduation she joined the Sisters of St Francis and began her early nursing career included work at the Anamosa Penitentiary, Xavier, and Dyersville before heading west to California. There she spent 39 years at Stanford University Hospital where she worked in Pediatrics, ICU and the Cardiac Care recovery room. She made many lifelong friends and had many adventures in CA.

Kathy was blessed with her son Nathan in 1977 and being a mom was her greatest joy. They shared many happy years in Menlo Park. Family was always a priority and following retirement she came back to Monticello to care for her father, allowing him to remain at home. She loved dogs, babies, cooking, traveling, cinnamon rolls, artichokes, avocados, and the Bay Area. A highlight was walking across the Golden Gate Bridge on its 50th anniversary with Nathan.

She is survived by her son Nathan, his fiancé Meg McGowan, her sister Mary Anne (late husband Frank) Miller, her brother Jack (Renee) Kuriger and a huge extended family.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Patricia Kuriger and Shelia (Jim) Chambers, her niece Lisa Finnegan and her husband Brian Finnegan.

Eric I. Evers

Eric I. Evers, age 78, of Dubuque, passed away peacefully at 1:10 a.m., on Friday, December 1, 2023, at Stonehill Health Center.  To honor Eric’s life private family services were held.  Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street is assisting Eric’s family.

Delores Parkin

Delores Parkin, 93, of Dubuque, died Monday, December 4, 2023, at her home.

Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory.

The Funeral Service for Delores will be 10:00 am on Friday, December 8, 2023, at Summit Congregational United Church of Christ with Rev. Karen Candee officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Earlville, IA.

Delores was born February 15, 1930, in Earlville, IA, the daughter of Erwin and Edythe (Diesch) Parkin. Delores graduated from high school in Earlville. She married Thomas Hennings in July of 1952, he preceded her in death in January of 1988. She married Richard Livermore in December of 1967 and he preceded her in death in February of 1980.

Delores worked as a Teletype Operator for Dain Bosworth for many years, retiring in 1990. She was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. In her younger years she enjoyed bowling. After having children and life got busier, Delores enjoyed collecting classic movie memorabilia, reading, and being outside on a beautiful day, whether it be going for a walk or just sitting enjoying the day.

Survivors include her two sons, Mike Hennings and Patrick (Connie) Hennings; two grandsons, Tim (Elicia) Hennings and Tom Hennings; three great-granddaughters, Cassie (Bryer) Erdmann, Allison Hennings, and Cynthia Hennings all of Dubuque; her brother, Gene (Annette) Parkin of Iowa City, IA; brother-in-law, Lloyd Smith; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Mary Ann Smith.

Rich Ahlers

Rich Ahlers, 53, of Dubuque, passed away on November 29, 2023, at Unity Point Finley Hospital.

Visitation will be held Sunday, December 10, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a funeral service at 4:00 p.m. with Fr. Martin Obeng officiating at Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd., Dubuque, IA.

Rich was born on October 30, 1970, in Dubuque, the son of Donald Ahlers Sr. and Barbara Scharff.  He graduated from Central Alternative High School.

He married Connie Ahlers, they went their separate ways but remained friends.

Rich worked as a bartender at Burkey’s Bar & Grill.

Rich was a great father, brother, uncle, and friend to all he knew.  He enjoyed spending time with his son and family.  He was a fan of the Bears and Dale Earnhardt Jr.  He also enjoyed a game of pool and the demolition derby.  In his spare time, he loved to get in a game of Seduko.  He enjoyed a good laugh and joking around with the regular customers at Burkey’s.  Everyone considered him to be a nice guy.

He is survived by his son Chaz (MiKayla Evanoff) Kohl; brother Lorin (Robin Meisenburg) Ahlers; sisters Tina Helbing, Donna (Dan) Burkart; brother Donnie (Lisa Dalsing) Ahlers Jr.; Nieces/Nephews: Jeremy Huberty, Nicole (Eric) Oliver, Sarah (Matt) Schultes, Jason (Rachel) Burkart, Josh (Tiffany Roussel) Burkart, Jake (Samantha Feyen) Burkart, Ashley (Derek) Haas, Kyle (Tiffani Switzer) Krieger; Aunts/Uncles: Jack Ahlers, Janet Driscoll, Linda (Kenny) Neumann, Nancy Hoag, Darien Hayward; along with many great nieces, nephews and cousins.

Rich was preceded in death by his parents Donald Ahlers Sr. and Barbara Ahlers.

Michael G. Wiederhold

Michael G. Wiederhold, 69, of Cuba City, Wisconsin, passed away Monday, December 4, 2023. Private family funeral services will be held at a later date. Casey-McNett Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Cuba City is assisting the family.

Mike was born on October 3, 1954, in Cuba City, Wisconsin, the son of Sylvester “Whitey” and Loretta “Ret” (Holtz) Wiederhold. He graduated from Platteville High School and attended Southwest Technical College in Fennimore, Wisconsin.

Mike served in the United States Navy for 11 years, working as a boiler technician, before being honorably discharged. He then worked at Barbara Coleman in Darlington, Wisconsin for over 25 years until retirement. Mike enjoyed taking pictures as a hobby.

Mike is survived by a brother, David Wiederhold, Spring Hills, FL; a sister, Mary (Albert) Johnson, Cuba City; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Todd M. McGovern

Todd M. McGovern, 50, of Dubuque, IA passed away at home on Saturday, December 2, 2023.

A visitation will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, at Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd. Dubuque. Military Honors will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League at 6:30 at the Funeral Home. Private family burial will take place in St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Centralia.

Todd was born on November 24, 1973, the son of Terry and Betty (Tigges) McGovern. He graduated from Dubuque Hempstead High School. Todd joined the Marines in 1993. He dedicated over two and a half years to serving his country. Todd was self employed as a general contractor. He was able to display his talents through the many jobs he took on.

Todd loved his extra-curricular activities, pool league, softball etc. He enjoyed watching any sport he could, especially his beloved Detroit Lions. He had many friends who adored him. It’s easy to describe him as a big guy with an even bigger heart. He was always willing to help no matter what the situation was. The Other Side in East Dubuque will never be the same.

Todd is survived by his daughter, Brookelyn; his parents, Terry and Betty; his brothers, Craig (Amy) McGovern and Shane (Molly) McGovern; nieces and nephews, Hayden, Evelyn, Kallen, Arlo and Louie; aunts and uncles, Linda Medley, Jim (Julie) Tigges, Don (Julie) McGovern, Ron (Janet) Rolwes and Marlene Golinvaux along with many cousins, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Gerry and Stella Tigges and Clem and Meralda McGovern; uncles Steve Golinvaux and Mike Tigges and a cousin, Cade McGovern.

Rita M. Lesch

Rita Mary Lesch, age 89, of Bloomington, MN, formerly of Dubuque and Peosta, IA, peacefully rejoined her Savior November 30, 2023.

Rita was born to William and Marvel (Lippstock) Oglesby, and later married John Peter Lesch on October 15, 1955, in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Key West, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, infant brother William Wayne, sisters Jean (Calvin) Dutka, Ruth (Cletus) Apel, and June (Vincent) Owens; brothers Ronald (Marlene) Oglesby and James Oglesby; an infant son Michael Lesch, nieces Lisa and Rhonda Oglesby, Jane Dutka, and nephew Michael Dutka.

Rita is survived by her husband John, children James Francis (Michelle) Lesch-Bloomington, MN, Amy Frances Lesch-Eden Prairie, MN, Susan Mary (William) Freiburger-Pecatonica, IL, Ann Marie Lesch- St. Louis Park, MN, Andrew John (Michaelle) Lesch, Scandia, MN, Carolyn Mary Sweeting (Chase) Hitchcock-Cedar Rapids, IA, and William Clarence (Jane) Lesch-New Ulm, MN, as well as sister-in-law Nancy Oglesby -Cuba City, WI.

Rita spent joyous and loving hours with grandchildren Brett and Keri Sweeting, Kate Lesch, Ian Lesch and Erin Lesch Davis, Will and Emily Freiburger, Brendan Lesch Lindstrom, and Jack, Ted, Tom, and Jana Lesch, along with great-grandchildren Noah, Henry, Layla, Jasper, and Sara.

Rita led a most remarkable life. From her modest roots growing up in what was then known as the “North End” of Dubuque, her accomplishments were many and include titles of daughter, sister, spouse, mom and grandmother, poet, educator, and artist. This brief time capsule simply cannot bear witness to the richness of the life she led or her influence upon the success of others, but as a family, we hope you see yourselves and your own families in this palette. This would give her joy!

Rita early-on epitomized the qualities of a life-long learner, from her love of Holy Ghost School, through graduation from Immaculate Conception Academy in 1952. The success of her seven children was her foremost concern, she and John imbuing each with traits of perseverance and commitment to personal integrity, dedication to task, and personal growth. As her children prepared for their careers, she realized a long-held dream and entered Loras College as a very “nontraditional student,” graduating cum laude in 1981. There, her enjoyment of literature and art blossomed. Subsequently she taught students whose needs were above and beyond the traditional classroom, and very successfully so for nearly a decade before formal retirement.

Her passion for literature, writing, and art as well as love of politics and discovery thereafter fueled travel throughout the United States and Europe, visiting numerous nations, states, and cities, absorbing the contents of countless museums, galleries, and gardens, and homes of favorite authors, including Ms. Emily Dickinson. These adventures added not only texture to the lives of our parents, but creativity and breadth to her success as a regional poet and dedicated artist. Numerous short stories and poems, as well as newspaper commentaries reflected her thoughts on social inequities, personal challenges and successes while navigating life. More than 40 oil and acrylic works are prized by family members for their beauty and capture of life’s diversity of landscapes: interpreting places she visited, experiences realized, and most importantly, moments of significance among all in the families she so deeply loved. Her two books afford us all access to her work, promising inspiration as if she were right next door. These artifacts reflect her growth as a person, her endless curiosity and ensures her legacy and profound influence for generations to come.

Her art hangs lovingly and expertly framed by our father John, her partner of nearly 7 decades. A  confidante without equal, and woodworker with his own creative eye and craft expertise, his hand-milled and meticulously finished materials frequently came from trees felled from their Peosta home. Theirs was a shared pursuit of beauty in producing and preserving their experiences for their children and all they might encounter.

Our Rita-our Rita and beloved mother–was destined to improve the lives of those lucky enough to find her. Our memories of her reading and singing in the rocking chair. Her love of nature, appreciation for the smallest details in finance, issues of the day, or our lives. Her tenacity and competitive stance at euchre. And too, the occasional frown of disapproval that invited improvement. Her sharp wit, her warm embrace and boundless love, fearless disposition, and sage advice inspired and motivated us to become what she and our Creator promised. We prize these very traits in each other as she did in us. She would expect no less, and if you knew Rita, these were her hopes for you, too.

Hers? Hers was the Life Well – Lived.

Viewing will be held in the sanctuary of St. Raphel’s Cathedral, 231 Bluff Street, Dubuque, Iowa, on Saturday, December 9th, from 9:00 AM to 10:30, followed by a requiem Mass. Interment services will be held at Mount Calvary Chapel from 11:45 to Noon, followed by a luncheon. Luncheon to be held beginning Noon at Windsor Park Retirement Apartments (formerly Xavier Hospital), in the Lower Level (parking area), 801 Davis Street in Dubuque.

Michael R. Pickel

Michael R. Pickel, 71, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on December 3rd, 2023 at home.

Family and friends may gather from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 7th, 2023 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a sharing service will be at 6:00 p.m. Please dress casual or wear your favorite sports team apparel.

Michael Ray Pickel was born to Ernest and Elnora (Ingles) Pickel on January 8th, 1952, in Dubuque, Iowa. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School, and lived in Dubuque his whole life. Mike worked hard to provide for his family, including over 17 years at Dubuque Packing Company and at Inland Protein before he retired.

Mike married Sharyn Von Ah on April 22, 1978 and gained a son, Jeremiah, whom he loved and raised like his own. Their daughter, Kara joined the family 3 years later. He loved listening to music, and he could often be found singing random songs and dancing in the kitchen. There weren’t many phrases that were safe from Mike turning into a song.

Family was most important to Mike, and he loved spending time with them. He considered his family among his best of friends, and he was a loyal friend to many. He was a not-so-loyal fan of the Packers and the Hawkeyes, usually acting as the armchair coach for both teams.

Mike was at his happiest enjoying the outdoors. He loved to hunt and fish; something he tried to share with his kids and grandkids. He took pride in his pristine yard and spent hours in the garden. As a self-proclaimed professional euchre player, he could be found criticizing euchre partners in many leagues around Dubuque.

He is survived by his wife, Sharyn, his kids Jeremiah Shaw (Susan McLaury) of Oelwein, Kara (Andy) Schroeder of Dubuque, and grandchildren Taylor and Jackson Shaw (Jacquelyn Sheets), Grace and Charles Schroeder. He is also survived by siblings Connie (Roger) Ruden, Karen Kress (Terry Shireman), Randy (Dianne) Pickel, Lynnette Hinkel, Lisa (Chris) Duhamel and sisters and brothers-in-law Sheila Staten, Rhonda Dunbar, Tari Beeler, Gary (Laura) Von Ah, Coleen Givens, Rick (Julia) Von Ah, Lori (Matt) Goedken, and Dave (Laurie) Von Ah, his godfather, Lawrence (Dena) Pickel and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ernest and Elnora Pickel, brother Ricky Pickel, brother-in-law Daniel Hinkel, parents-in-law Robert and Norma Von Ah, sister-in-law Marilyn Jurisic, brothers-in-law Jack Dunbar, Dennis Staten, Fred Beeler, Dennis Givens, and Larry Biggs.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Dubuque. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established.

Mary Ellyn Jensen

Mary Ellyn Jensen 94, passed away December 1, 2023 at Bethany Home in Dubuque, Iowa.

Family and friends may gather from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on February 9th, 2023, at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Dubuque, Iowa. A service will be held at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Samuel Felderman. Private burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens immediately. following. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, Dubuque, Iowa is assisting the family.

She was born November 15, 1929, in Des Moines, Iowa to Ora D. Orr and Elizabeth Orr. She graduated from Lincoln High School in Des Moines.

Mary Ellyn was married to Dale Van Ginkel in 1949 and the union produced 4 children. Beckie (Gil) Spence of Dubuque, Suzan (Richard) Staley of Flower Mound, Texas, Mary Jo (Dean) Fehl of La Porte City and Robert (Joanie) Van Ginkel of West Branch, Iowa.

They owned and operated Van’s Royal Blue Supermarket in La Porte City for a number of years before moving to West Branch, Iowa to open an antique business.  They later divorced. Mary Ellyn and her second husband Gordon Jensen were respected antique dealers and loved to travel.  He preceded her in death in 2007.

She was a founder of Creative Expressions Workshops in Dubuque; throughout her life she owned and operated several antique shops.  She loved attending auctions and refurbishing and decorating her homes.

Mary Ellyn was a unique individual and enriched the lives of countless others in many ways.

She was the loving grandmother to her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Raymond and Richard.

Memorials may be directed to Bethany Home, Unitarian Church or a charity of your choice in her memory.

Dennis Meyerhofer

Dennis N. “Denny” Meyerhofer, age 78, of Elizabeth, IL, completed his earthly journey on November 30, 2023, at the Galena Stauss Care Center while surrounded by his loving family. To honor Denny’s life, a Celebration of Life will be held on March 2, 2024, with details to be announced at a later date.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Denny’s family.

Denny was born on May 11, 1945, in Freeport, IL, a son to Edward O. and Mildred J. (Breed) Meyerhofer.  He was raised to proudly possess a strong work ethic and an unwavering devotion to his family, always willing to put in the work and make the necessary sacrifices for the greater good of all he was responsible for.  Denny was the third-generation owner of Breed’s Electric Service, Inc. and spent his working career primarily within the different divisions there, but also helped with the other family business, The Clothes Bin and Gift Shop whenever possible.  Denny was also a member of the Jo Daviess County Sherriff’s Department Mounted Patrol.  His affinity for an honest days work and horses blended perfectly in this venture.

In Denny’s early years, he was known as “BluJu”, a nickname given to him by his classmates.  Not long after another nickname, “Mofer” was also adopted into his life after Judy had hastily asked a group of guys in Elizabeth if they happened to know where Denny Mofer was.  It stuck and eventually Judy and Mofer were united in marriage.

Denny appreciated his down-time as well though.  Boating and snowmobiling were always near the top of the list, but undeniably his favorite way to spend time was camping with his family and friends.  The quality time together was a priority in Denny’s life and countless memories have been made over the years which all of his loved one’s will continue to treasure for generations to come.  Denny was as selfless as they come and wasn’t afraid to have a little fun when the work was done.  Truly the best husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather any family could hope for and his absence will be felt deeply in the lives of each and every one of them.  Thank you, Denny, for consistently being the good and decent man the Lord made you to be and may He keep you safe and secure in His loving arms until we all meet again.

Daniel J. Wessels

Daniel J. Wessels, 88 of Petersburg passed away Saturday, December 2, 2023, at MercyOne Medical Center in Dubuque.

Visitation will be held from 4 – 7 p.m. on Friday, December 8, 2023, at Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville where a military service will commence at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at Kramer Funeral Home from 9 – 10:30 a.m. prior to funeral mass.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 9, 2023, at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Petersburg, Iowa with burial in the church cemetery where military honors will be accorded.  Rev. Chris Podhajsky will officiate.

Dan was born on May 13, 1935, in Petersburg, Iowa, the son of Arthur and Clara (Krapfl) Wessels. Dan was born on the same farm he would farm for much of his life. He served in the US Army from 1955 – 1957. He married Elaine Schneider on May 10, 1958, in Holy Cross, Iowa.

Dan loved sports, watching, playing, and coaching for many years. He especially enjoyed golfing and assisted in the development of Lone Pine Golf Country Club. Dan and Elaine traveled to all 50 states, golfing, fishing, and camping in many of them. He cherished many memories with his family, especially attending any sporting events of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Dan had a deep appreciation for the land and he passed his love of the farm on to his children and their families. Dan was an avid golfer and fisherman and he had many lifelong friends. Dan’s greatest love was that of family. He especially cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His family brought him much joy.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Elaine; children: Ann DeLaney, Karen (John) Gleeson, Laurie Wessels, Steve (Jennifer) Wessels, Greg Wessels, Sarah (Michael) Brodkorb; grandchildren: Caitlin (Alex) Cecchini, Gregory (Fiance, Megan) DeLaney, Kevin (Madi) DeLaney, Audrey (Cade) Chace, Kristen (Derek) Emerson, Alex Gleeson, Lauren, and Jack Wessels, Abby, Ellie, and Benjamin; great grandchildren: Gabe, Clare, and Zach Cecchini, Maya and Landon Chace, Cora, Eli, Quinlyn, and Wyatt Emerson; in-laws, Lee Ann Wessels.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his parents-in-law, son-in-law, Paul DeLaney; siblings:  Celestine (Joe) Boeckenstedt, LaVern (Nettie) Wessels, Charles (Helen) Wessels, Lois (Paul) Pins, Jean (Lee) Mensen and Fred Wessels; brother-in-laws, Mark Schneider, Ed Spiel, and Ted Klein.
