Rickey A. Billmeyer

Rickey Aaron Billmeyer, 17, of Dubuque, IA, passed away on Wednesday, February 21, 2024. There will be a visitation held from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street. There will be a private family burial held at a later date.

Rickey was born on June 21, 2006 in Dubuque, Iowa to George Billmeyer and Missy Crooks. He attended Hempstead High and Southwestern High School where he played football. Rickey enjoyed fishing, hiking, swimming, camping and being outdoors. He was a boy scout and an avid video game player. He enjoyed time spent with his family and friends. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish Rickey’s memory include: his mom, Missy Crooks. His father, George Billmeyer. Two brothers, Zane Janzig and Daniel Billmeyer. His grandparents, Rickey and Mary Billmeyer, Anna and Kevin Eggers, and Richard (Noreen) Crooks. Three aunts, Michele (Richie) Van Dasselaar, Marissa Ernzen and Heather Billmeyer. One uncle, Erick (Leslee) Billmeyer. Life long friend/co-op gamer/step-dad, David Janzig. Along with many cousins, Alexander, Jaden, Fala and Holly and his many close friends.

Rickey was preceded in death by his great grandparents and his cousin & best friend Ruben Van Dasselaar. Rickey and Ruben will be chilling on their island in peace watching over us.

Rose M. Miller

Rose Marie Miller, 96, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at home.

Rose Marie Despeghel was born on March 18, 1927, in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Camiel and Elodia (Ghynebeire) Despeghel.  She was a graduate with the class of 1945 from Maquoketa High School.  She married Frank “Bud” Miller Jr. on January 19, 1947 at Sacred Heart Church in Maquoketa.  He preceded her in death on August 16, 1995.

Rose Marie started her first job at the age of 15 at the Pastime Theater in Maquoketa as a page and sold war bonds. She also worked at J. C. Penney and Sears catalog stores, helped Barb Tebbe with in home daycare, and assisted with elections for 50 plus years. She retired from farming in 1971.

Rose was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa and the St. Raphael #1156 Catholic Daughter’s of America’s for 75 years.  She also was a member of the Country Community Guild, Jackson County Cowbells, and the Jackson County Hospital Auxiliary.  She was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs.  She enjoyed playing cards, working puzzles, watching TV, visiting, and her neighbors.

She is survived by her children, Cindy Poll of Maquoketa and David (Pat) Miller of Fishers, IN; six grandchildren, Lindsay (Mike) Metcalf of Pleasantville, IA, Josh (Stacie) Poll of Maquoketa, IA, Andrea Glasscock of Bondurant, IA, Heather Miller of Fishers, IN, Amber (Christian) Saxhaug of Noblesville, IN, and Diana (Daniel) Taylor of Carmel, IN; and 11 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Lawrence, and a son-in-law Vern Poll.

A funeral mass celebrating her life will be held at 11:30 A.M., Monday, March 11, 2024, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa.  Visitation will be held prior to the funeral from 9:30 A.M. until 11:15 A.M. at the church.  Burial will be at Buckhorn Cemetery, rural Maquoketa, IA.  The Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa is caring for the family and in charge of the arrangements.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a Rose Marie Miller memorial fund has been established.

Mary A. Montag

Mary A. Montag, age 76, of Dyersville, IA, completed her earthly journey on February 26, 2024, at home while surrounded by her loving family.  To honor Mary’s life, her Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, March 8, 2024, beginning at 5:00 p.m., at Denny’s Lux Club, 3050 Asbury Road in Dubuque, IA.  A private family burial will be held in the East Dubuque Cemetery.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Mary’s family.

Mary was born on April 18, 1947, in Dubuque, IA, a daughter to Delbert G. and Lillian L. (Jestice) Hooks.  She grew up with a love for family and all that is good in this life.  She eventually met and married the love of her life, Thomas J. Montag, Sr., and the couple was blessed with many wonderful years together and five children of their own to love and nurture throughout life’s journey.  Thomas was sadly called home ahead of Mary and she spent her remaining years showering her children and grandchildren with as much love as her heart could express.  Mary did work as a pharmacy technician for many years with Fry’s Pharmacy before finally retiring in 2010 and making her way back home to Dubuque from Phoenix.

Mary’s greatest joy was found in her time with family.  In her free-time, retail therapy and creating magic at her craft table were among her favorite activities, but ultimately, most of those simply led to gifts to be shared with her loved ones.  Mary possessed a generous soul, an energetic spirit, and even a little bit of a stubborn streak when necessary, but all in all, Mary’s tender and kind heart was always on display.  When time allowed, she also enjoyed swimming and traveling as her zest for life was not only unquestionable, but unquenchable as well.  We will miss Mary’s bright light and love shining vividly in our days moving forward.  We find peace in knowing that she can rest now and only wait patiently to see her beautiful smile once again.  Thank you, Mary, for continually living life on your terms, leading by example, and for never surrendering when it looked like retreat was the logical option.  May the Lord bless and keep you safe in His loving arms until we meet again.

Jerold Stumpner

Jerold Stumpner, 86, of Balltown, Iowa passed away February 24, 2024 at his home in Minnesota after a four-year battle with cancer. No visitation or service.  Behr Funeral Home is assisting the family.

He was born on April 18, 1937 in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, son of Phillip and Josephine (Jelinek) Stumpner. He married Alice Hoelker on September 7, 1963; she preceded him in death in 1981. Jerold served in the Army and retired from John Deere Dubuque Works in 1992. Jerry loved spending time with his kids and their families and entertaining them with “Grandpa jokes” and word plays, taking them on hikes or trips, and telling them stories from his childhood. He could often be found hiking the trails of his favorite state parks, canoeing, and enjoying the outdoors. When he was not outdoors, he was a hobbyist, creating many balsa wood airplanes, rockets, and other models. Family came first to Jerry, and he was always ready to help relatives when they needed a hand, as well as his kids and grandkids on countless occasions with driving lessons, pet sitting, house repairs, and much more.

Surviving are his daughter, Dawn Stumpner of Madison, Wisconsin and his son, David (Jodi) Stumpner of North St. Paul, Minnesota, five grandchildren, Paulo, José, Manolo, Samantha & Abigail.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Carol & Josephine (Cookie). His wish will be honored to not have a Mass or service, but rather to play “Big Rock Candy Mountain” by Burl Ives and “Headed to the Last Roundup” by Gene Autry to remember him by. Think of him the next time you take a hike or enjoy the outdoors.

So remember as you wipe your tears the joy I knew throughout the years,

as I lived my life with you I pray that thought will see you through.

We may not be together in the way we used to be;

Jack A. Edens

Jack Arthur Edens, 89, passed away on February 18, 2024.

A long-time restaurateur has taken his talents, his secret recipes, his megawatt smile, and all his silly songs to a new venue where he will be serving the Lord.

He will rejoin his mother Sally (Thomas), his father Vance, and his stepfather Tony Pope. Also there to greet him are his siblings Wally, Tim, Orrie, and Betty Olmstead.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at Crossroads Community Church in Galena, Illinois. Visitation will be held from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm with a church service and dinner to follow. The Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena is assisting the family.

Jack was born September 20, 1934, raised in Chicago, and graduated from John Marshall High School in 1952. He then served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany where he coached baseball, dealt some cards, and blew up a few bridges as a member of the explosives team.

When Jack returned, he became the head florist for Pope’s Florist and Garden Center. Jack eventually partnered with his brother Tim and bought the family business from his folks. They parlayed that business into what became the most happening place in Mundelein, Pope’s Garden of Eden – the name honoring both fathers at the same time.

Jack moved to Waukegan, sans his brother Tim, to open Double D Pizza in 1978. He found a new partner in business, and in life, Tamara Tiernan. The two married in 1986 and later moved to Galena to open Procento’s Pizzeria with their sons Jack and Ryan. Jack retired in 2019 after many years of bringing joy to people through his food and hospitality. Jack went by numerous nicknames; Smilin’ Jack, Pizza Man, Senior, Jack Pope, Papa Jack, and Mr. Jack, just to name a few. Jack enjoyed spending his free time fishing at Jim’s Pond, but never believe the fish stories! Wherever Jack went, there was sure to be a song and a smile to follow, even if he did make up his own words to most of his songs.

Jack was always full of jokes, and he found true joy in making others laugh. Jack was an avid fan of Chicago sports teams; he loved the Chicago Cubs and Da’ Bears. Jack also liked to hustle his family on all sporting events, as he never lost a football bet. He will always “Be #1” in our hearts.

Fear not- all the stories about the man, the myth, the legend of Smilin’ Jack will live into infinity through the people he loved the most and left behind: His beloved wife Tammy, his sister Caroline Adornetto, his daughter Liz Edwards (Dave), his sons Jack (Ella), and Ryan. Stepdaughter Julie (Tim) Deal, his grandchildren, Ally, Ashlyn, Lana, Chelsea (Angel), and Troy, and a ton of admiring nieces and nephews.

On behalf of the Edens family, we would like to express our gratitude to the staff at Galena Stauss Nursing Home for the kindness, loving care, and friendship you provided to Jack. Thank you, Dr. Gullone, for the years of care and empathy. A special thanks to Hospice of Dubuque for their guidance and compassion in Jack’s final days. We pray that God will continue to bless the hands of the healthcare workers who have made such a positive and lasting impact in our lives.

Kathy A. White

Kathy Ann “Kate” White, 65, of Galena, IL, passed away on January 25, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospital surrounded by her family.

A private ceremony will be held for close family and friends at 11:00 AM, March 9, 2024, followed by a celebration of life at Noon at 404 South Street, Galena (Robbie White’s Garage).

She was born in Dubuque, IA, on October 21, 1958, the daughter of Russell and Mildred (Wickler) White.

She graduated in 1978 from Galena High School. Kathy loved to take her beloved dog Whiskey B John of Coaltrain “BJ” to dog shows, where he placed 1st in many of them. She had a passion for creating custom artwork.

All animals held a special place in her heart. She wrote and published two books: The Route to Africa by Kate White and Fantome in the Valley of Kings by Millie Russell (her pen name she chose in honor of her parents). Her second book was dedicated to her nephews, Brian, Tylor, and Jamie. In the early 80’s, she started working for the Historic Galena Foundation, where she grew her knowledge of antiques. In the last 20 years, she delivered papers for the TH.

She is survived by her brother, Clint (Elaine) White of Galena, IL, sister Linda Van Gordon of Dubuque, IA; a sister-in-law, Dawn “Cookie” White, several nieces and nephews; close friends, Alfred “Joe” Fessler, Mark Dahl, and her beloved cats, Callie and Peony.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Tom, Terry, and Jerry; four nephews, Brian, Tylor, Patrick, and Rusty; brother-in-law, Wayne Van Gordon; two sisters-in-law, Sandy, and Judy; close friend, Richard Burlingame, her longtime boyfriend, Dick Kramer and her beloved pets BJ, Oz and Sammy.

Doris C. Virtue

Doris Catherine Virtue (Oldenburg) journeyed to her destination with our Lord and Savior on Monday, February 26, 2024, at Midwest Medical Senior Care facility, surrounded by family.

A funeral mass will be held at 11:30 AM, Saturday, March 2, 2024, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Galena, where friends may call after 10:00 AM until the time of mass. The burial will be in the church cemetery. The Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena is assisting the family.

She was born on December 25, 1927, to Albert and Helena (Schnerre) Oldenburg. Dorie, the youngest of ten children, grew up on a farm in rural Galena. She was very close to all her siblings. Having lost her father when she was just eleven years old, her older brothers took the role and always treated her like their “little girl.”

Dorie attended St. Mary’s Grade School and graduated from Galena High School with the class of 1945. She married George Virtue on February 13, 1947, and he preceded her in death on September 22, 1975. Together, they raised five children, Paula, Michael, Libby, Tony, and Mary. After his death, she returned to school and earned her RN degree from NICC, Peosta, IA, in 1980.

She juggled many balls while raising her youngest two children, working part-time, and attending school. After receiving her RN degree, she started working at the Galena Stauss Hospital, where she worked for 20 years, retiring at age 73. Dorie was devoted to her faith and was a life-long member of St Mary’s Catholic Church, Galena. She was also a St. Mary’s Altar and Rosary Society member, working on many church projects they sponsored. After retirement, she traveled to many domestic and foreign places to honor Our Blessed Mother, Mary. Her genuine kindness and compassion were felt by all whom she met.

Her children survive her: Paula (Paula Kowalke) Virtue, of Boston, MA; Michael (Linda) Virtue of Hanover, IL; Libby (Ron) Miller of Galena; Tony Virtue, of Sycamore, IL; Mary Hocking, of Galena, seven grandchildren, Josh (Molly Sysko) Virtue, Brad (Erica)Virtue, Luke Virtue, Andy (Kim) Miller, Paul Miller, Anna (Ian) Thill, and Adam Hocking, six step-grandchildren, Kelly McSwain, Eric Hickman, Fred Messersmith, Sarah Volpe, Natasha Richemond, William Messersmith, seven great-grandchildren, Brooklyn and Blake Virtue, Madelyn and Carson Miller, Andrea and Arriana Miller, Jaxon Thill, sixteen step-great-grandchildren.

Dorie was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers; Robert, Albert Raymond, Ambrose, Francis, and Leo, four sisters; Gladys Greene, Antoinette Staggs, Mary Wienen, and Imelda Olech, a son-in-law, Rick Hocking, and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Ida M. Starr

Ida M. Starr, 95, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at Maquoketa Care Center.

A graveside service and burial celebrating Ida’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M., Friday, March 1, 2024, at Union Cemetery, rural Maquoketa, Iowa.  There is no visitation.  The Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa is caring for the family.

Ida Mary Evinger was born on May 14, 1928 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, to Clarion and Elsie (Shuey) Evinger.  She grew up in Pennsylvania until moving to South Bend, Indiana for two years, and then to Iowa. 

She married Frank Diffendefer in Pennsylvania, and they had two children, Betty Jo and William.  Frank preceded her in death.  On May 3, 1969, she married Walter Carlyle Starr in Muscatine, Iowa. He preceded her in death on November 16, 2012.

Ida was an accomplished seamstress and had worked in dress shops, a shoe factory, and lastly at Hyvee in Davenport handing out samples.

She enjoyed organic gardening, reading the Bible, baking, cooking, sewing, and bible study.

Those left to honor her memory include step-children, Nancy Flagel of Maquoketa, IA, Susie (Jim) McCubbin of TX, Steve (Cindy) Starr of Maquoketa, IA, and Sherri (Dwain) Feller of Spragueville, IA; daughter, Betty Jo Clark of TX; 8 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband Frank, second husband Walter, and son William.

Carmin L. Margeson

Carmin L. Margeson, 68, of Baldwin, Iowa, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday morning, February 25, 2024, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law in Maquoketa.

Carmin Lou Miller, the daughter of Forrest and Dixie (Butt) Miller, graduated from Midland High School in 1973. Her heart found its match in Jack N. Margeson, whom she married on January 14, 1979, in Monmouth, Iowa. Together, they built a life filled with joy, challenges, and the laughter of children.

Carmin’s professional journey was marked by the friendships she cultivated and the lives she touched. Her career began at Clinton Engines in Maquoketa, followed by a position at Stouffer’s in DeWitt. She served the community as a waitress at The Village Blacksmith in Maquoketa, and her passion for flora led her to RonAnn’s Floral Shoppe and Brenda’s Flowers, also in Maquoketa. Carmin’s final roles were at Family Dollar and Max Ray’s, but for over 30 years, she was a familiar face at the Hideaway in Monmouth, where she waited tables with a smile that welcomed everyone like family.

Beyond her work, Carmin’s commitment to her community shone brightly through her 20 years of tending to the Monmouth Cemetery with her sister, Kathleen. Their dedication to preserving the beauty and dignity of the final resting place of many was a true reflection of Carmin’s love for her roots and the history of her community.

Carmin’s home was a reflection of her spirit, with meticulously cared-for lawns and vibrant flower beds that mirrored the beauty she nurtured in her life. Her hands were rarely still, as she found joy in sewing, crafting, and the thrill of a good shopping trip. Above all, Carmin cherished the time spent with family and friends.

Those left to honor Carmin’s memory include her children, Shad (Ann) Patterson of Maquoketa, IA, and Bret Margeson of Bellevue, IA; step-children, Kevin (Veronica) Margeson of Phoenix, AZ, Kelly (Melanie) Margeson of Glendale, AZ, and Kristi (Byno) Atkins of Las Vegas, NV; daughter-in-law, Judy Margeson of Everson, WA; her adored grandchildren, Brystal, Cooper, Carlee, Jake, Alyssa, and Dean; brother-in-law, Dennis Appelhans of Monmouth, IA; and her beloved nephews, Dan (Jennifer) Appelhans of Central City, IA and Matt (Katy) Appelhans of Anamosa, IA, who were like sons to her; along with numerous cherished nieces and nephews. Carmin was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jack, her son Nick Margeson, and her sister Kathleen Appelhans on January 25, 2024.

Mary S. Habel

Mary S. Habel, 70, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on February 24, 2024.

Friends and family may visit from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday March 1, 2024, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road.

A Funeral Service will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home with Deacon John Stierman officiating.

Mary graduated from Stephen Hempstead high School in 1971. Mary worked at the chemical plant in East Dubuque as an Accountant for 30+ years. She was also together with her husband, Rich, for over 25 years. They were married at the Sanders Family Farm, July 2008.

Mary was the President of the Euchre Club for 10 years. She had a green thumb and was able to keep any plant alive. She was an avid canner and loved canning pickles and hot peppers.

Mary always celebrated life to the fullest, as she survived three battles with cancer – always finding a reason for a party and decorating for every holiday. She loved her grandchildren more than anything in the world, and always supported them in their endeavors.

Mary is survived by her husband, Rich Habel; children Ty (Erin) Maiden of Wisconsin, Tara Maiden, and Tonya (Tony) Lang; grandchildren Ellesha (Phill) Breitbach, Jenna Foley, Mercedes Wise-Maiden, Malena Wise-Maiden, Mya Maiden, Gia Lang, and Beau Lang; and great-grandchild Levonte McGonigle; siblings Jackie Hess, Sandra (Paul) Dolter of Arizona, Jim (Keiko) Sanders of Michigan, William Sanders, Michael Sanders, and Thomas Sanders; aunt Carolyn Haupert; and many nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents Ronald and Grace Sanders, siblings Robert Kramer and Judith Kramer, brother-in-law Dennis Loney, sister-in-laws Robin Sanders and Nancy Sanders, uncle John Haupert, and niece Natalie Sanders.

The family of Mary Habel would like to thank Crista Weber, MercyOne Cancer Center, and Hospice of Dubuque for their care of Mary throughout all of these years.

William F. Reisen

William “Bill” Fred Reisen, 55, of East Dubuque, IL, passed away from complications from pneumonia at 8:56 p.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, Iowa City, IA.

A celebration of life service will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 1, 2024, at the East Dubuque High School and Junior High, 200 Parklane Drive. We ask that everyone wear Warrior blue to honor him.

William was born on June 4, 1968 in Dubuque, IA, the son of Paul R. and Karen R. (Droessler) Reisen. He graduated from East Dubuque High School in 1986. He then went on to complete coursework in education at the Bachelor and Masters level, receiving a degree from Upper Iowa University in 1994. In 1995 he started a decades-long teaching and coaching career in the East Dubuque community.

Anyone who knew Bill knew that he was a storyteller. He was well known for his jokes, especially if the punchline was at his expense. His giggle was incredibly infectious. He was a comedian through and through, and he always sought to brighten the day of those around him. He loved unconditionally, taught devotedly, and coached passionately.

Every year you would hear him say, “The four greatest words known to man: pitchers and catchers report.” His love for the Cubs was legendary, exceeded only by his love for his family. He had the biggest heart, as everyone who knew him could attest. Not only did he do everything possible to make life better for his children, he also cared deeply for his students and players. He is survived by his wife Kara of East Dubuque, IL and his children Nolan of Waco, TX, Cassandra (Matthew) Burrell of Ankeny, IA, Anna, and Natalie. His father Paul R. Reisen, Sr. of East Dubuque; his sister Jody (Jim) Winchell of East Dubuque, his brother Jason “Jake” (Beckie) of Roy, UT, his brother Bryan “B” (Amy) of Fayettesville, GA, and his sister Gerry Lou (Jestin Sr.) Sertle of East Dubuque; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Ruth Bakey of East Dubuque, his in-laws, Shawn (Jill) Bakey of Colesburg, IA, and Shane (Julie) Bakey of Asbury, IA; and many nieces and nephews.

Bill is preceded in death by his mother Karen Reisen, his brother, Paul Reisen, Jr, his grandparents William and Pauline Reisen and grandparents Jerry and Luetta Droessler.

Bill lived his life to the fullest with so much love in his heart. He was truly a Warrior until the very end.

Sandra A. Parrett

Sandra A. Parrett, 84 of Assisi Village and formerly of Chicago, Illinois earned her angel wings Friday, February 23, 2024.

To honor Sandra, private family services will be held. Entombment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road is serving the family.

Sandy was born on October 20, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois to Gilbert and Eleanor (Stein) Churchill. She graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1957. On February 8, 1964 she married the love of her life David H. Parrett at Saint Ferdinand in Chicago, Illinois. David and Sandy had a whirlwind romance, marrying within months of meeting and quickly started a family. David preceded her in death on December 22, 2012.

Sandy was a devoted wife and truly amazing mom. Her children are in awe of her intelligence, strength, and determination. Her family was her focus and she lived to create beautiful memories for and with her children that they treasure today.

Sandy always worked outside her home but she was most fond of her work as Human Resource Manager at Wood County National Bank in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin. After she retired, she was generous with her time and volunteered for several organizations that represented her passions including Friends of the Library and the Dubuque Arboretum.

Sandy is survived by her children Lisa Parrett of Denver, CO, Mark (Jean Ann) Parrett of Dubuque, Andrea (Paul Wheelock) Parrett of Peosta. A sister Patricia Stromberg of Scottsdale, AZ, brothers Gerald (Diane) Churchill of Atlanta, GA and Gilbert (Helen) Churchill of Lodi, WI. Sisters-in-law Maggie Blaha of Milwaukee, WI and Jan Parrett of Sun Prairie, WI; along with several nieces and nephews and lifelong friend Nancy Neibauer of Black Mountain, NC. Two step grandchildren Jamie (Ryan) Becker and Justin (Marissa) Muehlenkamp; and step great grandchildren Chase, Carter, Cannen, Reid, and Alexa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her father and mother-in-law, brothers-in-law Donald and Thomas Parrett, Thomas Blaha and Kurt Stromberg; nieces Carol Suchomel and Amy Rivers; nephews John and Kent Churchill.

Lisa, Mark and Andrea appreciate all the compassionate care provided to their mom by staff and caregivers at Assisi Village along with Dr’s. Kristin Nelson and Tauseef Khan.

Richard A. Hannig

Richard A. Hannig, 66, of Peosta, Iowa passed away peacefully at home on February 15th, 2024.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, March 8th, 2024, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road in Dubuque.  A private burial with immediate family will take place in the future at Holy Family New Mellary Cemetery.

Richard was born on July 26, 1957, in Dubuque Iowa the son of Robert A. and Marcella I. (Koch) Hannig.

After graduating from Dubuque Senior High, Richard moved to Manitou Springs, Colorado where he worked a variety of jobs including construction and landscape management but his dream job, where he worked the longest, was maintaining and operating the Pikes Peak Scenic Railway.

He enjoyed all things outdoors in the mountains; hiking, biking, camping and skiing. He loved the free and open spaces often driving up to little known mountain valleys. Richard was in his element while in the mountains. But after over 35 years calling Colorado home, Richard came back to Peosta to help take care of his aging parents and maintain the family home.

He is survived by two brothers Ronald (MaryJo Wiatrak) of Chisago City MN and Robert J. (Sandi) of Cape Fair MO; two nephews Colin (Fiancée Christina Videen) of South St Paul MN and Ryan (Fiancée Erica Willerton) of White Bear Lake MN; a niece Sophia of Chisago City MN and various cousins.

Richard was preceded in death by his father Robert and his mother Marcella.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful neighbors on and around Ryan Road for all the friendship and kindness they provided to the Hannig family over the years.

Elaine M. Rapp

Elaine M. Rapp, 97, of Dubuque entered peacefully into Eternal Life on Friday, February 23rd, 2024 at home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 26th at the Cathedral of St. Raphael with Fr. Dennis Quint officiating. Friends and family may visit from 9:00 a.m. until the start of Mass. Burial will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery.

She was born April 29, 1926 in Peru Township, Dubuque County, the daughter of Charles and Alma Stecklein Ruff. Her ancestors were early settlers in the Sherrill area. She grew up in the North End of Dubuque where her German Catholic background shaped her character and personality.

Elaine attended Sacred Heart School and Immaculate Conception Academy. She ice skated, roller skated, played basketball and euchre, and went fishing and hunting with her Dad. Before her marriage she worked at a greenhouse, the H.B. Glover Co., and the General Dry Battery Factory.

She married Robert C. Rapp in 1945 at Sacred Heart Church. Except for a few years in Kieler and Rockdale, the couple resided in Dubuque to raise a family. Elaine later worked at the Stampfer’s Dinette until it closed and then at St. Dominic Villa until her retirement.

She bowled in a league for several years, enjoyed watching many sports (especially tennis), reading British murder mysteries, and crocheted practical items. She daily prayed the Rosary and for family (living and deceased). She got a driver’s license at age 60 and drove until age 92 with a perfect record. Elaine loved watching the birds and had a cardinal collection.

Elaine’s profound love and concern for her children, family, and friends showed itself in numberless ways, including a stream of birthday and anniversary cards for many years. Although her warm and comforting hands are no longer so, the memories she left us are. No words can truly thank her for everything she did to raise her family.

Elaine is survived by her children: Richard (Janice), Robert, Marvin, Geraldine (Harold) Dirks, Karen, Kenneth (Yvonne), Michael (Jory), Peggy (Tim) Buse, and Daniel Joseph; daughter-in-law Judy Rapp; 30 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; her sister Wilma (Jack) Derks; and her Rapp in-laws Jeanne (Gerald) Fudge and Elmer Engling.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert; her sons Ronald and Russell, and two infant sons; her parents Charles and Alma Ruff; her siblings Harold (Catherine), Carl (Irene), Virginia (Leo) Gau, Jeanette (Philip) Jungk, Philip (Shirley), Chester, Donald (Mary Jane), Alma Mae (Milton) Reisen, and Wayne (Kathy); and her Rapp in-laws Eileen (Joye) Bellings, Earl (Myra), Patricia (Harold) Kemler, John (Lillian), Marilyn Engling, and Gerald (Dixie); and several other relatives and dear friends.

She would ask that you remember her in prayer.

Harold E. Daniels

Harold E. Daniels, 76, of Dubuque, died Sunday, February 25, 2024, at his home.

Visitation will be from 10:00 am until 11:00 am Saturday, March 9, 2024 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory.

Harold was born October 16, 1947, in Winona, MN, the son of Paul Samuel and Mary Louise Worrel Daniels. On November 17, 1973, he married Cherielynn Marie Janikowski in Winona, MN.

He graduated from Winona Senior High School in 1966.

Harold worked at Behrns Manufacturing until he moved to Dubuque in 1978. In November of 1978, he was hired at Klauer Manufacturing, where he worked until his retirement in October of 2009.

Harold dedicated his time to numerous roles within the First Presbyterian Church, where he served as both a deacon and elder and actively participated in various committees. He was a Cub Scout den leader for Pack 4 at Fulton Elementary School and served on the committee for Troop 94. Outside of his community involvement, Harold found joy in activities such as bowling, watching professional bowling and wrestling, playing cards and games with family and friends, taking scenic rides down to the river, exploring new destinations through travel, and cherishing moments spent with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Cherielynn; three children, Nicole (Ivy) Fountain of East Dubuque, Chris (Michelle Ragland) Daniels of Dubuque, and Joe (Holly Mills) Daniels of Savage, MN; nine grandchildren, Caitlin Daniels, Lyfe Fountain, Wisdom Fountain, Nik’kivy Fountain, Samuel Daniels, Mackenzie Daniels, Camilla Daniels, Louise Daniels, and Hamilton Daniels; and two great-grandchildren, Ryan and Cyrus.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one granddaughter, Josie Daniels, five sisters, Evelyn Daniels, Carol (Earl) Hensel, Bev (Harold) Beeskow, and Norma (Merrit) Stark, and four brothers, Paulie Daniels, Earl (Dot) Daniels, Bobbie (Mitch) Daniels, and Dick (Deanna) Daniels.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Hospice of Dubuque.
