Cynthia L. McCord Bailey

Cynthia Louise McCord Bailey passed away surrounded by her loving family at St. Elizabeth Healthcare in Edgewood, Kentucky, on November 27, 2023. She was 73 years old.

Born on June 8, 1950, in Dubuque, Iowa, she was the daughter of Donald C. McCord and Mildred J. [Lex] McCord. Cindy was the beloved wife of 53 years to John Bailey; treasured mom of Sarah Rogers (Tommy), Jason Bailey (Lauren), and Heather Bailey (Brad Snowden); cherished sister to Jennifer Tigges (Ron) and Marie Yeager (George) and sister-in-law to Larry Bailey (Ramona); and beloved grandma Cici to Caroline, Jerry, Sloane, and Finn. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Jerry McCord.

Cindy met her husband, John, on a blind date in 1969. He was captivated by Cindy’s beautiful blue eyes, and after a year and some days they married in her hometown. In 1977, they settled in Northern Kentucky in order to start a family. A natural nurturer, Cindy’s life’s work both personally and professionally revolved around caring for others and their well-being. She was a registered nurse and provided care to many over the course of her career in hospitals, workplaces, and homes. Cindy possessed a knack for cooking and was adventurous in her practice. Her tastes ranged widely, from elaborate gourmet meals to homestyle cooking such as chicken and dumplings and strawberry preserves.

After retirement from nursing, Cindy filled her days practicing yoga, reading with her book club, and creating art and jewelry. She loved to travel, regularly visiting the Great Smoky Mountains and finding relaxation on cruises in the Caribbean and Alaska. She was always planning her next adventure, often inviting friends and family to make new memories together.

Cindy truly loved her friends and family and will be remembered for all the joy and enthusiasm she shared with each of them.

John M. Walsh

John M. Walsh, 83, of Dubuque passed away on Monday, November 27, 2023.  A private Catholic Mass in memory of John will be celebrated with John’s family next summer.

John was born in Lancaster, Wisconsin, on March 14, 1940.  He was educated at St. Andrew’s High School in Tennyson, Wisconsin, and at Loras College in Dubuque.

He was very active in civic and political organizations and represented Dubuque as a Senator in the Iowa State Senate from 1967 to 1973.

John is survived by his siblings; Jane Sather, Ruth Bockes, Mark (Pam) Walsh, Barbara (Bob) Radler, and Ann (Jeff) Liddle, and many nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cliff and Isabelle Walsh; a brother, Joseph Walsh, a sister, Mary Hills, and his wife, Vicki Walsh.

Hugh J. Dalton

Hugh J. Dalton, 85, of Dubuque, IA, was welcomed home by our Lord and Savior on November 28th, 2023. He spent his final days at MercyOne Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. To honor Hugh’s life, a visitation will be held for family and friends at 9:30 a.m. on December 11th, 2023, followed by a memorial mass at 10:30 a.m., all at St. Joe’s Key West (10204 Key West Drive) in Dubuque, with Msgr. Thomas Toale officiating. Burial will be held immediately after mass in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery, where full military honors will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Hugh’s family.

Hugh was born on August 23rd, 1938, in Rice Lake, WI. He was son to Otto and Esther (Ring) Dalton and younger brother to Nancy (Dalton) Isabella. Hugh spent his younger years developing problem-solving skills and an affinity for helping others, which quickly became lifelong traits. This not only helped him succeed as a Civil Engineer, but also helped Hugh become the epitome of a man everyone could count on, rain or shine. Hugh was blessed to meet his soul-mate, Carolyn (Booth) Dalton, early on in life while they both attended Spooner High School. The high school sweethearts were later united in marriage on August 22^nd, 1959, at St. Francis De Sales in Spooner, WI. They soon after happily welcomed their three children. Hugh continued on to honorably serve his country with the U.S. Army before earning his Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from U.W. Platteville in 1963. Upon graduation, he began his career with the City of Dubuque’s Engineering Department. Hugh then went on to invest his time and talents with Goerdt Construction and J.F. Brennan before retiring from Apex Ready Mix after many years of service.

Hugh was an avid outdoorsman who appreciated every opportunity to be able to go outside, animal watch, or throw on his turkey hunting gear. He also enjoyed woodworking, snow skiing, and spending time on the river. Although Hugh had many passions, his loyalty for others ran even deeper. This was especially the case for his St. Joe’s Key West parish, the Green Bay Packers, and University of Iowa Hawkeyes. But ultimately, Hugh’s favorite way to spend his time was being with his friends, family, and grandchildren. He always knew the most valuable things in life never came with a price tag but instead came from happy moments shared with others. Hugh was a quiet, humble man who loved deeply and gave of himself much more than he would ever take in. The world is truly a lesser place without Hugh’s bright light shining. His friends and family miss him dearly, while treasuring each and every memory, lesson, and story he leaves behind.

Thank you, Hugh, for being the perfect role model with every role you played so diligently. May the Lord hold you safe in His loving arms until we meet again someday.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Hugh include his beautiful bride of 64 years, Carolyn Dalton, of Dubuque, IA; and his three children; Mike (Molly) Dalton, Jeff (Sharon) Dalton, and Susan (Tim) Schmitt, all of Dubuque, IA. He is also survived by his nine adored grandchildren; Stephanie (Craig) Bentzen, Jenny Dalton, Sarah Dalton, Alie (Daniel) Thole, Kelsey (Max) Kemp, John Dalton, Annie McGuire, Matthew McGuire, and Christopher Schmitt, as well as his five great-grandchildren; Lucy Thole, Benny Thole, Scout Kemp, Teddy Kemp, and Thor Bentzen. He also leaves behind his brother-in-law, Jim Isabella, along with his sister-in-law, Marilyn (Roger) Yockey, brother-in-law, Jim (Margaret) Booth, and numerous extended family members, nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors. Hugh is preceded in death by his parents, as well as his older sister, Nancy Isabella.

Lionel W. LaPage

Lionel W. “Doc” LaPage, 85, passed away November 29, 2023. Visitation will be from 2:00-6:00p.m., Sunday, December 3, 2023 at the Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Road, Dubuque. Funeral services will immediately follow at 6:00p.m. with Rev. Steven Garner officiating. Inurnment will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Rickardsville, Iowa.

Doc was born on August 30, 1938 in Dubuque, Iowa to George E. and Linda E. (Miller) LaPage. Doc grew up on the family farm in Rickardsville, Iowa. At the age of 13, they moved to Dubuque. He attended school at St. Joseph’s in Rickardsville, and then went on to Jefferson Junior High School and Dubuque Senior High School, graduating in 1956.

Doc worked at the Dubuque Pack for 44 years and then worked at Geisler Brothers for two years. He later went on to work for the City of Dubuque for 14 years where he met many great friends.

He enjoyed going to Farm Toy shows with his friend Whitey. He also enjoyed spending time with his dear friend Jerry Benn. He was also a collector of Farmall model tractors. Other hobbies included target shooting, fixing small engines and motorcycles, and reading history books.

Doc is survived by sons, Jeffrey M. (Sandy) LaPage, James M. (Stacey) LaPage; a daughter, Jolene M. LaPage; grandsons, Nathen, Patrick, and Ryan “Buzz”; granddaughters, Katie, Rachel, Sarah, and Kayla. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, including his favorite niece, Candy (Bob) Hachmann of Peosta. He is also survived by his former wife, Sandy Walker, and brother-in-law, Jim Walker.

Doc was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Clarence McDermott; brothers, Keith and Lester LaPage; and a sister, Linda Lou LaPage.

In lieu of flowers, a Lionel LaPage Memorial Fund has been established.

Doc’s family wishes to extend a special thank you to Mercy One Cancer Center, especially Dr. Engelman and his nurse, Sarah. They also wish to thank the wonderful staff at Luther Manor Grand Meadows for their care and compassion given to Doc these past few months.

Mary K. Finn

Mary K. Finn, age 91, of Dubuque, IA, completed her earthly journey on November 24, 2023, at ManorCare in Dubuque.  To honor Mary’s life, a private family burial will be held at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Mary’s family.

Mary was born on July 4, 1932, in Cascade, IA, a daughter to Loras F. and Mary E. (Holdren) Finn.  She was a kind and gentle woman who consistently kept life simple and uncomplicated whenever possible, but was also known to occasionally present her stubborn streak which would only help to endear her to those around her in the end.  Mary devoted her working career in the housekeeping department at Loras College for many years before moving into retirement.  She loved her family with a welcoming heart and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.  Thank you, Mary, for allowing your light to shine throughout your 91 years among us and may the Lord keep you safe in His loving arms until we all meet again.

Frank J. Heraver

Frank J. Heraver, age 96, of Dubuque, Iowa, formerly of Waukegan, IL, completed his earthly journey on November 19, 2023, at the Luther Manor Grand Meadows in Asbury, IA.  To honor Frank’s life, a private family service is being held at a later date.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Frank’s family.

Frank was born on April 27, 1927, in Waukegan, IL, a son to John and Gertrude (Debevic) Heraver.  Frank honorably served his country with the U.S. Army during WWII and upon returning home was united in marriage to his beautiful bride, Joan V. Michalski on October 29, 1949.  They were blessed with 74 wonderful years together and two sons of their own to love and nurture along the way.  Frank invested his time and talents for over 23 years with the American Can Company and eventually moved into retirement as a production manager in 1990.

Frank also appreciated the opportunity to use his free-time outside of work in many enjoyable ways.  His luck at the penny slots was legendary and countless hours were spent trying to figure out if it was another good day at a hot machine.  Frank was also a classic car enthusiast, especially when it came to the 30’s and 40’s era.  The ability to step back in time and reflect on the good old days and memories past was always a positive event in Frank’s mind.  But, at the end of the day, family was where his heart always resided in perfect harmony.  Frank’s love and devotion to family was continually on display and his role as Grandpa was never taken for granted.  We will miss our kind and loving patriarch more than words could depict, but we are forever grateful for the 96 years that the Lord was gracious enough to share him with us.  Thank you, Frank, for not only leaving a lasting legacy within the hearts and minds of all who knew and loved you, but for also being a solid example and leader for all of the generations who follow your lead.  May the Lord bless you and keep you safe in His loving arms until we all meet again.

Karen H. Waller

Karen H. “Kay” Waller, 81, of Dubuque, passed away peacefully Monday, November 27, 2023, at Luther Manor in Dubuque.

Visitation will be from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm Friday, December 1, 2023, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory.

The Funeral Service for Kay will be 10:00 am Saturday, December 2, 2023, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory with Rev. Dianne Grace officiating. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery in Dubuque.

Karen was born December 3, 1941, in Dubuque, IA, the daughter of Eugene and Charlene (Blum) Frommelt. On June 25, 1960, she married Donald D. Waller Sr. at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Dubuque. He died August 8, 2016.

She was a 1959 graduate of Dubuque Senior High School.

Kay was a department manager at Kmart for 22 years before retiring in 1997.

She was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, and enjoyed flower gardening, collecting Southwestern items, and shopping at The Buckle.

Survivors include her five children, Donald (Cherie) Waller, Jr. of Ankeny, IA, Dennis (Lynn) Waller of Bernard, IA, Dawn LuGrain of Dubuque, Doug (Teresa) Waller of Bernard, IA, and Drew (Susan) Waller of Dubuque; 12 grandchildren, Jeremy Waller, Ashley (Daniel) Dvorak, Dustin (Betty Byers) Waller, Sean (Traci) Vaske, Amber (Warren Doud) Waller, Zachary Waller, Meggan LuGrain, Annie (Jeff) Meier, Nicole (Tyler) Kleiner, Samuel Waller, Maxwell Waller, and Vivian Waller; 16 great-grandchildren, William, Rose, Vanessa, Nadia, Haley, Joseph, Austin, Corbin, Adelyn, Nicolas, Dominic, Kierra, Jude, Allyanah, Elliott, Bristol, and Emmitt; one sister, Wendy Renne of Dubuque; two brothers, Mark (Gert) Frommelt of Dubuque, and Gene Frommelt of Vernon, TX; one sister-in-law, Sharon Frommelt of Dubuque; and her fur baby, Isabel.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Dean, two great-grandchildren, George and Charles, one sister, Kristen, and two brothers, Kenny and Craig.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Dubuque Arboretum.

Gerald J. Lyons

Gerald “Gerry” “Ger” J. Lyons, was born to this world in Dubuque, Iowa, on December 12, 1941 and began his young life at the Lyons family farm in Bernard.  He was born to eternal life on November 26, 2023, at the age of 81 surrounded by his family and wife of 58 years, Kathleen “Kathy” M. (Kemerer) Lyons.

Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 1, 2023, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a wake service will be at 2:45p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at St. Joseph Key West Church with Fr. Martin Obeng officiating. Family and friends may gather after 9:00 a.m. Saturday at the church until the time of mass. Burial will follow at Assumption Cemetery, Sylvia Switch in Zwingle.

While Ger’s life was rooted on the farm, the importance of education in his life began when he first attended Sweeney School in Bernard. He attended Maquoketa School for two years and was in the last graduating class from St. Columbkille’s High School in 1959.  He went on to attend Loras College, graduating in 1963 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science. Ger went on to law school at the University of Iowa Law School to become an attorney. He studied in Iowa City for six months and decided to take a different path. He then got his teaching certificate from Loras College and became an educator, his true calling. He began teaching at St. Columbkille’s and then at Washington Junior High where he retired after 33 years of teaching Social Studies and Talented and Gifted courses. During his time at Washington, “Mr. Lyons” started the toy model club, established enduring professional relationships with his colleagues, and, most importantly, shared his passion for our common history and government with thousands of young people.

While teaching was important to Ger, he was not shy of hard work and lived life to the fullest.  After high school, Ger started working at Roling Construction company pouring concrete. He continued working there part-time for 20 years.  In 1978, Ger and his young family started on a new “adventure” when they moved to their 80-acre farm, and he began the process of rebuilding the farmhouse. By then, he and Kathy had five children, all of whom survive him: Mike (Darla) Lyons, Al (Diane) Lyons, Amy (Dave) Herrig; Sara (Rich) Lyons, and Sue (Rodney) Hess Carroll.

Ger collected and restored classic cars with an affinity for Fords and Mercury’s and was working on a 1941 Ford Pickup Truck when he passed.  He was a perfectionist in the garage and the quality of his work was unsurpassed.  A longtime member of the J.I. Case Collectors’ Association, Ger collected Case Tractors and memorabilia.  This past summer, he got to see his 195g Case 300 in the hometown Bernard parade.

Ger loved all things relating to history, politics, and current events. An avid reader, he could consume hundreds of pages in one sitting at an astounding rate. He also collected stamps, marbles, and Mason Jars. In the winter, he and Kathy were known to be puzzle builders and most often found together watching a classic movie, side-by-side in their loveseat.

In retirement, Ger committed himself to these pursuits and religious reverences.  Until just this summer, he served as the groundskeeper for the Catholic Cemetery at the former Assumption Church at Sylvia Switch in Zwingle.  Christmas was a cherished time for Ger as well as St. Patrick’s Day, another joyous time to share his Irish heritage with friends and family in celebration.

Ger’s retirement also allowed him to share his abundant love with his Grandchildren: Madeline (Jesse) Overman, Mason Lyons, Tyler Lyons, Trent Lyons, Kayla Miller, Logan Miller, Tori Miller, Hayden (Maecee) Herrig, Holly (Adam) Ewing, Catherine Repp and Zachary Hess.  “Gramps”, as he was known to this exclusive club, was known to arrange outings to see the latest Star Wars movie, to visit the bookstore where he’d “back the book haul,” and organize an outing to purchase pet supplies and donate them to the Humane Society.  He was very proud of his grandkids and the legacy he imparted upon them will live on long into the future.

Gerry was a gentle and loving person.  He had a fondness for animals of all kinds, but especially a weakness for his dogs: “The Archies”.

Gerry is also survived by three brothers Jack (Helen) Lyons, Ray (Sandy) Lyons, Joe (Barb) Lyons, his bro “Buff” Dave Boffeli, and a sister, Linda (Bill) Mullinex. Two sisters-in-law Carol (Joe) Murguia, Helen (Kerry) Reisen, and a brother-in-law, Ray Kemerer Jr., many nieces and nephews, and his Ford V-8 friend, Tony Hughes, and lifelong friend Dick Kleis.

He was preceded in death by his parents James and Marion Lyons, his siblings Ann Lammer, Sherriff Bob Lyons, and Jane Boffeli, siblings-in-law and several nieces and nephews.

The family is most grateful for the excellent care Ger received at St. Luke’s in Cedar Rapids. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered to Hospice of Dubuque or the Dubuque Humane Society.

Sr. Mary Karen Jasper, PBVM

Sister Mary Karen Jasper, PBVM, 87, died on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at the Sisters of the Presentation (Mount Loretto), 2360 Carter Road.

On Thursday, November 30, friends may call from 9:30 – 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Chapel, Sisters of the Presentation, where there will be a wake service at 9:30 a.m. and funeral service at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West.

Sister Mary Karen, daughter of Tony and Clara (Anstoetter), was born Vera Cecelia Jasper on March 15, 1936, in Farley, Iowa.  She entered the Sisters of the Presentation on September 8, 1953, and professed her perpetual vows on August 22, 1961.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts from Clarke College (now Clarke University) in Dubuque, Iowa, and a Master of Science from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.

Sister Karen’s ministries took her to Osage, Dougherty, Charles City, Ryan, Epworth, Sheldon, Algona, Bode and Waukon, all in Iowa, where she taught and served as a principal. She also served as co-director and pastoral minister of Nagle Center, caring for sick and elderly sisters at Mount Loretto. She retired to Mount Loretto in 2009 and celebrated her 60^th Jubilee in 2013. Reflecting on her jubilee, Sister Karen stated, “Our foundress Nano Nagle’s prayerfulness and readiness to serve wherever she was inspired me. I am grateful for the example of my sister, Sister Mary Philip Jasper, and the Presentation Sisters who taught me for 12 years. I have enjoyed wherever I have been in mission. I felt successful and ready to serve wherever I was called.” Sister Karen enjoyed nature walks, crafts, word games, puzzles, reading and writing. She valued prayer and community service.

Surviving are her sister Mary Smith, nieces, nephews, and the Sisters of the Presentation with whom she shared her life for 70 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Sister Mary Philip Jasper, PBVM, Rita Schwendinger, and Lois Hoeger; her brothers, Leroy, John and James; and her brothers-in-law Gerald Schwendinger, Joseph Hoeger and Orlin Smith.

Gregory W. Schmidt

Gregory W. “Greg” Schmidt, 60, of Potosi WI, died at UW Madison Hospital November 24, 2023.

Visitation will be held Wednesday November 29, 2023, from 3:00 to 6:00pm with a funeral service at 6:00pm with Nichole Robson officiating, at Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory 2595 Rockdale Rd. Dubuque IA.

Greg was born December 19, 1962, in Iowa City, IA to William and Patricia (Hank) Schmidt.

Greg married JoAnn Grutz on August 16, 2014, at Lord of Life Church.

He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1986 with a B.S. in Operations Management and Management Information Systems.

He started working at Quaker Oats right after college, later at Rousselot in Dubuque, and lastly at Nu World in Dyersville.

Greg enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson, he was a member of the local H.O.G’s, he also loved rooting on the Hawkeyes, Dallas Cowboys, and NY Yankees. He loved spending time outside, bird watching and working on cars.

Greg is survived by his wife JoAnn of Potosi; children Steven (Sarah) Schmidt of Dubuque, Adam (Hannah) Jobgen of Hazel Green, Matthew Jobgen of Dubuque; grandchildren Zoey, Reid, Chloe, Avery and Beau will join the family in 2024; sister Lisa (Scott) Davidson of Hillard OH, Kathleen (Jim) Burke Delaware OH, Jolie (Rich) Winning of Westerville OH.; step-mother Kathy Schmidt; mother-in-law Eileen Grutz; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and daughter Lauren Schmidt.

Memorials may be sent to the Lauren Schmidt Scholarship Memorial in care of Dubuque Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque.

Mary E. Noonan

Mary E. Noonan, 95, of Cascade, Iowa, passed away Thursday, November 23, 2023 at her home in Cascade, Iowa.

Visitation for Mary will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 1, 2023 at St. Martin’s Catholic Church, where Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Mark Osterhaus officiating.   Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery in Cascade, Iowa.  The Reiff Funeral Home of Cascade is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mary was born February 2, 1928 in Cascade, Iowa, daughter of Nick and Elizabeth (Lahr) Neiers.  She received her education in the former St. Mary’s school in Cascade.  On June 15, 1950 she was united in marriage to Daniel Noonan at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Cascade, Iowa.   He preceded her in death on September 6, 2018.

Mary loved golfing, chocolate and ironing.  She loved her shoe’s.    Most of all she loved to visit with family and friends.  Mary couldn’t be prouder of her family.  She was very knowledgeable on the history of Cascade, and loved to share that knowledge.

She was a member of St. Matthias Parish in Cascade, Iowa, and the Cascade Tri-County Historical Society,

She is survived by one daughter, Susan (Kevin) Hosch of Monticello, IA; two grandchildren, Kristie Kremer (& friend, Mike Aiello) and Stephanie (Allen) Ries; five great grandchildren, Ricky (Sheena) Kremer, Alex (Nikki) Ries, Tyler Ries (& friend, Megan McDermott), Zach Ries (& friend, Alyssa Koppes), Olivia Ries (& friend, Caden Thies); two great great grandchildren, Collins and Bode Ries; brothers and sisters-in-law, Michael (Jean) Noonan of Peosta, IA; and  Carol Neiers of Decator, IL

She is preceded in death by her parents; a son, Daniel Noonan on September 11, 1981; one great grandson, Justin Kremer; two  brothers, Nick Neiers and Paul (Marilyn) Neiers; brothers and sisters-in-law, Mary Margaret Noonan, Robert Noonan, John (Nancy) Noonan, Walter (Cecelia) Melloy and Pat (Mary) Noonan.

Michael E. Zahren

Michael E. Zahren, 69, of Dubuque, passed away November 23, 2023.

In keeping with his wishes, private family funeral services will be held. Please join us in the Celebration of Mike’s life from 2:00-6:00, Thursday, November 30, 2023 at the Asbury Eagles Club. The Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Funeral Home and Crematory is entrusted with arrangements.

Michael was born on December 13, 1953, to Robert and Barbara (Bott) Zahren in Dubuque, Iowa.

He was united in marriage to Pam (Weiland) Zahren on November 24, 1989.

Mike graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1972. He earned a full-ride scholarship to play football at the University of Iowa.

Mike was a tremendous athlete, excelling in football, basketball, and baseball. He earned all-state honors in football, and all-conference honors in basketball and baseball. He was inducted into the Dubuque Senior High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002. He was also inducted into the Slow-Pitch Softball Hall of Fame in 2022.

Mike spent 25+ years refereeing and umpiring high-school athletic games.

During his free time, he also enjoyed golfing, cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes, Green Bay Packers, and Chicago White Sox.

Mike cherished time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, who learned that he was the master of the chicky-chinas and eating toes. He also was devoted to keeping his stylish ponytail so his granddaughters could practice their hair styling skills. He also loved his dog Lilly who was never far from his side.

Mike is survived by his wife of 34 years, Pam; children, Kaycee (Brad) Northouse, Corey (Jenny) LuGrain, and Amy (Jeff) Pfeiler, all of Dubuque; grandchildren, Ivy, Zahren, and baby Northouse on the way, Olivia and Ella Pfeiler, Grace, Addy, Nick, and Jack LuGrain. He is also survived by his sisters, Judy Zahren-Kalb, and Carol (Clifford) Wyatt all of Dubuque; in-laws, Diane Stemper and Darrell (Cheryl) Weiland.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers-in-law, Mike Kalb, and Paul Stemper.

A Michael Zahren Memorial Fund has been established.

Tom Donovan

Tom Donovan, age 84, passed away peacefully at Hawkeye Care Center, Dubuque, Iowa, on Sunday, November 26, 2023.

Visitation will be held from 8:30 am until 10:30 am on Thursday, November 30, 2023 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Tom will be at 11:00 am Thursday, November 30, 2023, at Church of the Resurrection with Father Phil Gibbs as the Celebrant. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery in Dubuque.

Tom was born on August 12, 1939, in Cuba City, Wisconsin, to Clem and Valois (Fleege) Donovan. He graduated from Loras Academy in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1957. He enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve in 1959 and served two years active duty on the USS Newport News in Norfolk, VA. He was honorably discharged in 1965.

On May 30, 1962, he married Karen Helbing at St. Rose Catholic Church in Cuba City, Wisconsin.

Tom was employed by Concrete Products/Top Block and Brick for 55 years.

Tom is survived by his wife, Karen; honorary son, Richard (Kim) Donovan, and two honorary grandchildren, Brandy and Michael Donovan of Asbury, Iowa; three siblings, Janet (Tom) Vosberg of Northfield, MN; Joyce (Gabriel) Loeffelholz of Platteville, WI; Dick (Katy Schellenberger) Donovan of Hazel Green, WI; brothers-in-law, Dave (Carol) Helbing of Dickeyville, WI and Rick (Kris) Helbing of Dubuque; sisters-in-law, Joan Helbing of Dickeyville; Mary Jo Helbing of Janesville, WI; and Linda (Carl) Osterhaus of Dickeyville; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bob Donovan; his in-laws, Henry and Hilda (Klaas) Helbing; brothers-in-law, Dale Helbing, Henry “Butch” Helbing, and Stanley Helbing; and sister-in-law, Angie Donovan.

Raymond T. Hickson

Raymond T. Hickson, 86, of Otter Creek, passed away on Sunday, November 26, 2023 at Mill Valley Care Center.  Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 am, Thursday, November 30, 2023 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Otter Creek.  Family will greet friends starting at 9:30 am until Mass time at the church on Thursday.  Burial will be in St. Lawrence Catholic Cemetery.

Raymond was born December 29, 1936, the son of Frank and Edna (Martin) Hickson.  He worked on the family farm all his adult years, enjoyed driving his golf cart all around Otter Creek, playing with the farm dogs and playing baseball.  He loved the land and will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his brother, Robert “Bob” (Rosie) Hickson; a sister in-law, Ruth Hickson; nieces and nephews. Rick (Regina) Hickson, Pat (Kathy) Hickson, Karen (Steve) Conrad, Ellen (Bob) Sarazin, Jolene Arensdorf, Terry (Tina) Hickson, and Julie (Jason) Duesing; and many great nieces and nephews and extended family.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Joseph Hickson.

Kathyrn A. Oleson

Kathryn A. (Robinson) Oleson, 73, of Dubuque, IA, formerly of East Dubuque, IL, passed away on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at Luther Manor in Dubuque.

Family and friends may call from 9 -10:45 a.m. on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at the Miller Funeral Home in East Dubuque, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Private family burial will follow at the East Dubuque Cemetery.

Kathy was born on March 17, 1950 in Dubuque, the daughter of Milton and Patricia (Potter) Robinson. She was a graduate of East Dubuque High School, the class of 1968 and Scott Community College at Bettendorf, IA, where she received her LPN degree.

Kathy was formerly employed at St. Dominic Villa and Sunnycrest Manor as a CNA. She lived and worked in California and returned to Dubuque in March of 2017. She loved Panda Bears.

Surviving are her three children, Jennifer (Jose) Escarsega of Vista, CA, Josh (Mary Kay) Oleson of Dubuque and Jillette Oleson of Oceanside, CA; four grandchildren, Gavin (Nicole), Emilee (Seth), Mikala (RJay) and Amelia, and five great-grandchildren, Gracie, Olivia, Caroline, Cheyanne, and Della; her siblings, Martin (Atsuko) Robinson of Garden Grove, CA, and Sandi Robinson of Vermillion, OH.

She was preceded in death by her parents Milton and Patricia; her son Jeffrey; and a grandson Harrison; her siblings, Tom, Mick and Bill Robinson, and Elizabeth Schlichting.
