Carmin L. Margeson, 68, of Baldwin, Iowa, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday morning, February 25, 2024, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law in Maquoketa.

Carmin Lou Miller, the daughter of Forrest and Dixie (Butt) Miller, graduated from Midland High School in 1973. Her heart found its match in Jack N. Carmin’s final roles were at Family Dollar and Max Ray’s, but for over 30 years, she was a familiar face at the Hideaway in Monmouth, where she waited tables with a smile that welcomed everyone like family.

Beyond her work, Carmin’s commitment to her community shone brightly through her 20 years of tending to the Monmouth Cemetery with her sister, Kathleen. Their dedication to preserving the beauty and dignity of the final resting place of many was a true reflection of Carmin’s love for her roots and the history of her community.

Carmin’s home was a reflection of her spirit, with meticulously cared-for lawns and vibrant flower beds that mirrored the beauty she nurtured in her life. Her hands were rarely still, as she found joy in sewing, crafting, and the thrill of a good shopping trip. Above all, Carmin cherished the time spent with family and friends.

He was a comedian through and through, and he always sought to brighten the day of those around him. He loved unconditionally, taught devotedly, and coached passionately.

Every year you would hear him say, “The four greatest words known to man: pitchers and catchers report.” His love for the Cubs was legendary, exceeded only by his love for his family. He had the biggest heart, as everyone who knew him could attest. Not only did he do everything possible to make life better for his children, he also cared deeply for his students and players. It is difficult to measure the number of lives he touched.

Reisen, Sr. of East Dubuque; his sister Jody (Jim) Winchell of East Dubuque, his brother Jason “Jake” (Beckie) of Roy, UT, his brother Bryan “B” (Amy) of Fayettesville, GA, and his sister Gerry Lou (Jestin Sr.) Sertle of East Dubuque; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Ruth Bakey of East Dubuque, his in-laws, Shawn (Jill) Bakey of Colesburg, IA, and Shane (Julie) Bakey of Asbury, IA; and many nieces and nephews.

She was born April 29, 1926 in Peru Township, Dubuque County, the daughter of Charles and Alma Stecklein Ruff. Her ancestors were early settlers in the Sherrill area. She grew up in the North End of Dubuque where her German Catholic background shaped her character and personality.

Elaine attended Sacred Heart School and Immaculate Conception Academy. She ice skated, roller skated, played basketball and euchre, and went fishing and hunting with her Dad. Before her marriage she worked at a greenhouse, the H.B. Glover Co., and the General Dry Battery Factory.

She daily prayed the Rosary and for family (living and deceased). She got a driver’s license at age 60 and drove until age 92 with a perfect record. Elaine loved watching the birds and had a cardinal collection.

Elaine’s profound love and concern for her children, family, and friends showed itself in numberless ways, including a stream of birthday and anniversary cards for many years. Although her warm and comforting hands are no longer so, the memories she left us are. No words can truly thank her for everything she did to raise her family.

Diane M. Dally

Diane Marie Dally, 78, of Denver, CO entered eternal life on December 9, 2023. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30am Friday, March 15 at Risen Christ Catholic Parish, 3060 S Monaco Parkway, Denver, and will be live-streamed at www.risenchristchurch.org. Reception to follow in the Risen Christ Parish Hall. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.horancares.com.

Born May 12, 1945 in Dubuque, Iowa to parents Herman and Alverda Feldman. She was a delightful addition to her family, joining older brothers Glen and Vern. She beat the odds at age 2 when doctors found and removed a Wilms tumor and she lived the rest of her life with only one kidney. She was an avid 4-H girl; winning the blue ribbon for her famous banana bread recipe that her grandchildren enjoy to this day. She was the President of the County 4-H club. She traveled extensively with her parents to United Commercial Travelers events, and she was thrilled to have visited all but one state (Alaska) in the country.

Diane attended grade school at St. John the Baptist in Peosta, Iowa. She graduated from Wahlert Catholic High School in Dubuque, Iowa in 1963 where she made the varsity cheerleading squad. She loved cheer which is fitting because she carried her cheerleading attitude throughout her entire life as she championed her family and many friends. High school was full of pure joy for Diane with Friday night sock hops, continued leadership in 4-H, and basement “Roaring 20’s” parties with her family.

After graduation Diane moved to the Quad Cities for Business school. She worked for Flexsteel for a few years with some dear friends and made many hilarious and lasting memories, often involving long lunches and happy hours. She married Richard Dally of Dubuque in 1969 and moved to Denver a few years later where she made another lifelong friend working for Diner’s Club. One of her greatest gifts was her talent for making and keeping friends.

Diane loved living in Denver. She became a mother in 1976, earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Colorado Women’s College in 1981 and her next professional move would introduce her to a family she would work for and alongside for the rest of her life (as accountant, HR manager, social director, and official pastry chef). She absolutely loved working for the Scott Family. In 1983 she accepted a position working for the grandfather, William C. Scott II (Gramps) and in 2023, days before her passing, she lovingly spent her last day in the office, at her professional home Innovative Brick Systems, surrounded by Gramps’ grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Diane’s other professional love and side gig was catering. She joined Epicurean Catering in 1997 to work the International Golf Tournament in Castle Pines. She was originally only going to work the 5-day tournament. However, she enjoyed it so much that she worked with Epicurean part-time for the next 26 years. She also reigned for a time as Queen of the Plum Room at the Oxford Hotel where she met another best friend for life. She loved the parties, she loved the people – her catering community – and her true undying love was working as a suite attendant for the Denver Broncos games for over 15 years. In her last few years, after sustaining an injury to her shoulder and undergoing treatments for breast cancer, she still toyed with the idea of working another Bronco season.

Diane truly lived. She was purposeful and thoughtful, generous and warm. She loved life and had an unwavering positive spirit. You were lucky to simply know her because she would make you feel like you were one in a million. She never missed a birthday, or an occasion for a card or a telephone call, she was passionate about baking and making sweets for all of her family and friends, neighbors and co-workers. She also loved the arts and theater and was a season ticket holder at the Denver Center for Performing Arts for over 30 years. She frequented shows on Broadway and in London’s West End. She loved Monet, and treasured touring his gardens in Giverny, France. She also was drawn to the images of the American Southwest immortalized by Georgia O’Keeffe.

Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends. She is survived by her daughter and best friend Danielle (Harold) Dally Brigman and the three lights of her life, her granddaughters Emily, Megan and Brooke Brigman of Destin, Florida. Siblings: Glen (Shirley) Feldman, Vern (Theresa) Feldman, many nieces and nephews, her decades-long companion John (Jack) Lane and loving friends who became her family over the years. She is also survived by her former husband Richard Dally. Her dear cousin, Doris (Farney) Schueller passed one month after Diane, no doubt missing her weekly visits with updates and treats.

Diane was preceded in death by her parents Herman and Alverda Feldman, niece Kathleen Feldman, nephews James Feldman, Joe Feldman and Richard Feldman and great-nephews Barrett Jones and Maclean Feldman.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to one of her favorite charities: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, ASPCA, American Heart Association, Guiding Eyes for the Blind, National Park Foundation and The Nature Conservancy.

Phyllis K. Driscoll

Phyllis K. “Philly” Driscoll, 69, of Epworth, IA passed away Friday, February 23, 2024. A visitation for immediate family will beat Reiff Funeral Home in Epworth, IA.

Phyllis was born on March 31, 1954 in Dubuque, IA, daughter of Charles and Patricia (Plumley) Driscoll. Most of her childhood was spent on the family farm in Epworth, IA. She graduated from Western Dubuque High School in 1972 and went straight into the workforce taking her first job at KMART. There she made friendships that brought her happiness throughout her entire life. In July of 1976, she packed a bag and her passport and headed off on the adventure of a lifetime to Brazil. There she visited and stayed with a family friend, Ellie, who had stayed with her family as a foreign exchange student in high school.

Phyllis was a woman of many talents. If you ever stopped in for a visit, you were greeted with a “Well, how the hell are ya,” followed by a warm hug. Cooking was her passion, a skill that was passed down from her mother, Patricia. There was always a seat at her table for everyone, even her dogs!

After her mom passed, Phyllis became the family hub, making sure to check in with everyone all while keeping up with sending cards on holidays and birthdays. Phyllis also had an immaculate memory and never passed up a chance to take a trip down memory lane, always recalling every last detail. During the summer months, Philly enjoyed her time outside working in her garden and tending to her flowers. Nothing filled her heart with more joy than time spent with her nieces and nephews.

Of course, we can’t forget her pride and joy, the dogs! Over the years, Phyllis and Dennis were the proud parents of many dogs who received the same love and devotion they showed each other.

She is preceded in death by her parents; one son-in-law, Robert Charles Delaney; and one great nephew, Jeffery Joseph Delaney.

Those left to cherish her memory include the lifelong love of her life, Dennis Dietz; son, Shane Dietz (Olivia); grandson, Ethan Dietz; three sisters-in-laws, Jolene Johnson, Carol Spinosa, and Mary Davis; three siblings, Terry (Marylou) Driscoll, Thomas (Lisa) Driscoll, Cindy (Terry) Bolsinger; and eight nieces and nephews, Cora (Nick) Roe, Megan (Aaron) Witter, Kevin (Chris) Delaney, Michael (Rebekah) Delaney, Matt (Manessa Michel) Delaney, Emily (Matt) McKeon, Heather Bolsinger, and Clay (Darlene) Bolsinger.

“It isn’t what we leave behind, it’s what we leave in people’s hearts that count.”

(Bruce) Ryness.  He spent his early years developing a strong work ethic and even achieved the rank of Eagle Scout before moving into his working career.  He was also a proud member of the Boy’s State of America and treasured all of the friends and lessons he learned along the way.  Duane spent the majority of his years in the roofing and siding industry, but eventually spent his final years in apartment maintenance before finally moving into retirement in 2018.  Duane always enjoyed driving around town and reflecting on all of the projects that he had been involved with and was always eager to share his expertise and wisdom with anyone interested in following in his footsteps.  We are going to miss Duane’s strong, yet humble soul walking among us moving forward.  Thankfully, he leaves behind an abundance of wonderful memories to help ease the pain of the more difficult days ahead and for that we are forever grateful.  Thank you, Duane, for leading by example, bringing your best to the table whenever possible, and for always treating others as you wished to be treated.  May the Lord give you peace and comfort now as your earthly battles are behind you and may your legacy live on in our hearts and minds until we all meet again.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Duane include,

his two sisters,
Leslie (Kevin) Bailey, Heyworth, IL,
and Susan Jumper, Tucson, AZ;

his nephew,

Leon J. Mullis

Leon J. “Sonny” Mullis, 85 of Dyersville, Iowa formerly of La Porte City, passed away Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at MercyOne Dyersville Senior Care.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 27, 2024 at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville with burial in the church cemetery.  Rev. Philip Agyei will officiate.

Leon was born on August 15,1938 in Cascade, Iowa, the son of George and Hazel (Hoffmann) Mullis.  He married Wilma Lansing on April 8, 1961 in Dyersville, Iowa.  She preceded him in death in 1991.  Leon later married Betty (McDowell)Satterlee on April 6, 1996 in Manchester, Iowa.

Leon worked hard all through life, starting on the farm after 8th grade when his father was injured and needed assistance. From then on, hard work became the refrain of his life, often taking on additional jobs to help provide for his family. A fond memory showing Leon’s care for his family was when he went to have his worn-out work boots resoled so that he didn’t have to buy a new pair, but rather let that money be used for his kids.

Leon was known for having broad shoulders, but he needed them.  He had to endure the passing of his son Dennis, in 1964, and later, his son Jeffrey, who passed in 1970.  Both less than a year old along with a daughter at birth. Despite this hardship, Leon was able to continue to grow and raise a family.

Words we think of when reflecting on Leon are honesty and integrity. “Do what is right, even when no one is looking.”

Survivors include his wife, Betty; children: Joann Mullis and Michael (Nicole) Mullis of Dyersville, Michelle (Jeff) Eilers of Guttenberg. Kevin (Amy) Mullis of Flower Mound, TX, Tammie (Mike) Dirks of Des Moines, Tina Laurie of Springville, Sheri Seaton of Brooklyn and Marty (Dacia) Satterlee of La Porte City; grandchildren: Ryan Eilers, Cole Mullis, Connor and Maxton Mullis, JJ Wulfekuhle, Christine Napoli, Michael Wulfekuhle, Cody and Tianna Seaton, Anthony Gagliardi, Kerrigan and Kellen Satterlee; great grandchildren: Dawson, Collins, Trey Wulfekuhle; siblings: Nancy Heaverlo and Dorothy (Loras) Steffen of Cedar Rapids, Ruth (Joe) Meyers of WI, Lester “Butch” (Jo) Mullis of OR, Roger (Rita) Mullis of Manchester, and Carla (Jeff) Peterson of TN; in-laws: Verna (LeRoy) Bries of Garnavillo, Jerome (Mary Margaret) Lansing, Rita Lansing, and Bernice Lansing of Dyersville, William (Joan) Lansing of Worthington, Patty Atwater of Manchester, David (Sheila) McDowell of WA state, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Wilma, children: Steven Mullis, Dennis and Jeffery Mullis in infancy; in-laws: Joe and Ruth Lansing, Art Lansing, John Lansing, Catherine and Hugo Engelken, Richard McDowell, and Kenny Atwater

The family would like to thank Dubuque Hospice and MercyOne Dyersville Senior Care for their compassionate and loving care.
