He married Kathleen “Kay” Craugh on May 23, 1953 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Tennyson, WI. She preceded him in death on March 14, 2020, after 67 years of marriage. Carl loved to tell the story of riding his “Harley” into Eagle Point Park and offering 3 pretty girls a ride. Which one did he eventually marry? The one who said “no way would I ride on one of those things”, of course!
Carl and Kay raised their two sons, Dave and Steve, in Dubuque where Carl was a firefighter on the Dubuque Fire Department, retiring at the rank of Assistant Chief after 36 years. Carole S. Welu
Carole Sue (Wilberding) Welu, 82, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away Friday, September 22, 2023, at Stonehill Communities.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM Thursday, September 28, 2023, at the Church of the Resurrection in Dubuque. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow immediately at 11:00 AM. Following the Mass, burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
Carole was born on February 26, 1941, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Henry and Mildred (Schaan) Wilberding. She grew up in Dubuque, IA and attended Immaculate Conception Academy. She has fond memories of growing up on Lincoln Avenue with her siblings. She started her sewing career at Sorbeau Manufacturing and later at Zuckies, both in Dubuque. She married David J. Welu on September 7, 1963, at St. Anthony Catholic Church. He died July 21, 2023.
Early in their marriage Carole was busy helping Dave with the demands of the family business. However, her greatest joy was spending time raising their four children – Mike, Mark, Julie, and Jane. Being a mother was her life’s work and she was devoted to doing the best she could for all her children. For instance, she was a Boy Scout Den Mother and planned field trips and many craft activities for the scout troop. She was the original “Soccer Mom”; carpooling kids to and from school field trips in her faux wood-paneled nine-passenger station wagon. Much to the chagrin of her children and husband, she organized regional Sunday sightseeing trips. Small petting zoos, Strawberry Point, and other locations were met with initial groans but later became the material for fond family memories. She cooked daily family meals, and many recipes were inspired by the local Betty Thomas radio show. Unfortunately, her efforts with casseroles were not always appreciated by her fussy children. When her children were older, she returned to part-time work at both Manor Care and Sears. She also enjoyed volunteering her time at St. Mark Community Center. Later, when she was blessed with grandchildren, she provided love and support to her family. She spent many hours as a babysitter so her youngest daughter could pursue her nursing education. And she could always be counted on when any of the grandchildren were ill or the family needed additional or emergency care.
She is survived by three children: Michael J. Welu, of Dubuque, IA, Julie A. (Stephen) Frommelt, of Dubuque, IA and Jane A. (Vance) Schollmeyer of Dubuque, IA; seven grandchildren, Marcus H. Welu of Washington D.C. and Evan H. Welu of San Angelo, TX, Amanda K. Frommelt of Chicago, IL, Nicholas D. Frommelt of Bettendorf, IA, Amber C. (Cory) Miller and Brady V. Miller of Pleasant Hill, IA, Dr. Allison M. Schollmeyer of Osceola, IA, and Emily Schollmeyer of Sparta, WI; and one great-grandson, Brady V. Miller.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, David; her son, Mark A. Welu; her brother, Alan H. Wilberding; and sister Sally A. Parker.
We would like to thank the staff at Stonehill Communities and Hospice of Dubuque for their kindness and care of Carole.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Stonehill Communities or Hospice of Dubuque.
Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home and Crematory is in care of the arrangements.

Richard H. Steele
Richard “Dick” Harley Steele, 80, of Dubuque, died Monday, September 18, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Visitation will be from 8:30 am until 10:15 am Saturday, September 30, 2023 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory.
The Funeral Service for Dick will be 10:30 am Saturday, September 30, 2023, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory with Pastor Kaity Kemp officiating.
Richard was born June 6, 1943, in Madison, WI, the son of Harley and Frances (Grimm) Steele. He graduated from Oregon High School in 1961 and married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Kuehni, on August 4, 1962. Dick & Shirley had three children and were happily married until she died on November 4, 1996.
On December 11, 1997, he married Karen Linder in Verona, WI. Dick and Karen enjoyed 25 years of marriage, traveling the world together.
Dick worked hard to provide for his family – often working more than one job as well as running his own carpentry business for fifty years. Dick was also a building inspector in both the Town of Springdale and the Town of Verona in Wisconsin. He retired in 2016.
Dick loved music! He was a drummer for many years, sang in the church choir at times, and joined the bell choir with Karen.
The Church was a very important part of Dick’s life. He served on church councils, headed up a major building project, taught and participated in Sunday school classes, went on adult and youth mission trips, and was a member of the chancel committee at one for many years. Dick also completed the Wisconsin UCC Lay Academy program. At the time of death, he was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ.
Dick enjoyed football and could be found rooting for the Green Bay Packers, the Badgers, and, yes, even sometimes the Hawkeyes.
Dick struck up conversations with new people everywhere he went, and he was always ready with a warm hug for family, friend, and stranger alike.
He is survived by his wife, Karen; one son, Tim (Tabitha) Steele of Blue Mounds, WI; two daughters, Tammy (Monte) Wagner of Janesville, WI, and Beth (Matt) Schlueter of Kimberly, WI; eight grandchildren, Brandi (Brian Hunt) Schumpert, Kira (LeRoy) Tlusty, Sam Walter, Richard Steele, and Christine, Angela, John, and Emily Schlueter; three great-grandchildren, Aalica Hunt, and LeRoy and Claire Tlusty; many nieces and nephews; and two sisters-in-law, Marlyn Linder and Lin Johnson.
Besides his first wife, Shirley, he was preceded in death by his parents, Harley and Frances; one sister, Georgia Smith; his father- and mother-in-law, Paul and Edna Kuehni; and mother-in-law, Katie Linder; two sisters-in-law, Caryl Gempler, and Norma Hoelscher; three brothers-in-law, Chuck Coker, Harris Gempler, and John Smith; three unborn grandbabies, Arin, Jennifer, and Benjamin Schlueter; lots of aunts and uncles and one niece, Debbie Fitch.
Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home and Crematory is in care of the arrangements.
