Gwendolyn L. “Gwen” Elmegreen, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away unexpectedly at her home in Monmouth, Iowa, on January 27, 2024, just one day after celebrating her 80th birthday. Born in Keokuk, Iowa, on January 26, 1944, to Hubert and Neva Mae (Teastworth) Stark, Gwen grew up to be a woman of strong faith and unwavering dedication to her family.

Gwen graduated from Pleasant Valley High School in 1963 and immediately embarked on a new chapter of her life by marrying her soulmate, Ronald Elmegreen, that same year. The young couple’s love blossomed, and together they purchased a farm near the Ozark Bridge in 1965, which they would call home for the rest of their lives. Their partnership extended beyond their marriage as they worked side by side to cultivate a life filled with love and hard work on their beloved farm.

In addition to her commitment to the family farm, Gwen was a compassionate soul who dedicated part of her life to caring for others as a home healthcare provider. Her nurturing nature also found expression in her work at the Ertl Toy Factory in Dyersville and later as a friendly and familiar face to many as a cashier at Walmart in Maquoketa.

Gwen’s life was a testament to her faith and the joy she found in simple pleasures. She was a devout Christian who lived her beliefs through acts of kindness and love. As a member of the Maquoketa VFW Ladies Auxiliary, she contributed to her community and honored the service of others. Her hobbies reflected her creative spirit and love for life. Gwen was an accomplished quilter, creating beautiful works of art that will be cherished by her family for generations. An avid reader, she delighted in the twists and turns of a good mystery novel. Her green thumb was evident in the vibrant plants that flourished under her care, a symbol of her ability to nurture and grow all that surrounded her.

Gwen’s legacy is carried on by her loving husband, Ronald Elmegreen of Monmouth, IA; her children, Von Elmegreen of Oklahoma City, OK, Heidi (Jerry) Weets of Lockport, IL, and Art (Kathy) Elmegreen of Delmar, IA. David V. Tone

Born July 6, 1964, to parents Mel and Rosanne (Seipp) Tone in beautiful Dubuque, Iowa.

He was the second of two sons, joining his older brother Tom (Cathy). David especially enjoyed the outdoors: dutch-oven cooking, deer hunting, camping, and riding his motorcycle in his youth and as an adult. He was an animal lover, dogs in particular and he always had one or more by his side.

He met his soul mate, Maxine (Hayes) at the age of sixteen.  They remained loving sweethearts throughout the rest of his life.  David was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy at the tender age of sixteen during a sports physical for wrestling.  He and his wife Maxx had two children, Alexander and Kirsten. David was a stay-at-home husband and father and worked part-time as a delivery driver and later a taxi driver in Galena.  David believed volunteering was a lifestyle. He was a positive role model to many, many youth, as he shared his interests in the outdoors and religion as a Scout leader and Sunday School teacher. He deeply enjoyed teaching new skills or ideas and watching those under his tutelage grow. His hobbies included reading murder mysteries, home repair shows, wood working, and brewing his own beer as a member of the Dubuque Area Society of Brewers.

David was a loving son, husband, brother/brother-in-law, father/father-in-law, uncle, and grandfather.  He lived a life full of love for God.  He survived two heart transplants, one in 1983 and a second one in 2013.  He always looked toward the positive as he journeyed through his health challenges with both courage and strength.  He snared many with his dry wit that could be sarcastic or slap-stick, often catching them by surprise in his net.  He left this earth a legacy of hope through valor and quiet dignity in times of challenge and growth.

He is survived by his father, Mel Tone, his wife Maxine (Maxx), his children Alexander (Gina) and Kirsten (Darren Kelley) and his grand-daughter Reaghan and his brother Tom (Cathy) and was preceded in death by his mother, Rosanne and both sets of grandparents.

Father Richard W. Kuhn

With great sadness and tremendous pride in a pastoral life well lived, the family of Fr. Richard (Dick) William Kuhn regret to announce his peaceful death. Fr. Kuhn died at the age of 95 at Stonehill Health Center in Dubuque, on Friday, January 26, at 4:50 pm.

The forth of eight children, and oldest son, Fr. Kuhn was born at the family farm in Osage, IA, on March 18, 1928. He faced his first test at his baptism with ice-cold water from the frozen baptismal font, which was temporarily on the porch of the parish rectory due to a fire in the Sacred Heart church.  Fr. Kuhn worked on the family farm and was a football player and one of the most popular young men at both Osage High School and later Loras College in Dubuque, IA. He discerned his vocation while at Loras; and upon graduation, he entered Conception Seminary College in Conception, MO. Fr. Kuhn was ordained as a Roman Catholic Priest on May 17, 1953.  He served in dozens of parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Dubuque. Fr. Kuhn was most recently Pastor of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Peosta and of Holy Family Catholic Church in New Mallory.  While at St. John’s, a major accomplishment was leading the effort to build the Seton Catholic School, Peosta Center.  For over 70 years, Fr. Kuhn was the bulwark of his close family and the epitome of a dedicated and faithful servant in the Archdiocese of Dubuque touching countless lives in a warm and positive way. He was well known for never forgetting a face or name and always being ready with a witty joke or pithy one-liner. Proud of his Irish heritage, he often entertained anyone that would listen with a spontaneous song. He retired from St. John’s and Holy Family in 2012 at the age of 84.

Fr. Kuhn was a Knight of Columbus and strong supporter of the Order and its principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism.  He served as Council/Assembly Chaplain and Iowa State Council Chaplain.

Along with his many assignments in the Archdiocese of Dubuque, Fr. Kuhn was exceptionally proud to have served as a US Navy Chaplain for six years.  Following his commissioning at Newport, RI, he served first at Naval Air Station Adak, Alaska, and then the Naval Station in San Diego, CA. During his naval service, Fr. Kuhn was proud of the fact that he was the oldest Catholic Chaplain and oldest Lieutenant in active Navy service. In his retirement, Fr. Kuhn returned to San Diego for two years as a contract civilian chaplain for the Navy. Upon his return to Dubuque County, he was active in the local American Legion Post Six. To emphasize the pride he held for his naval service, he clearly expressed his desire for burial in his Service Dress White uniform.

He travelled extensively throughout his life, often visiting family, friends and loved ones. One had to be careful not to invite him, unless they were ready for him to show up. He also visited missionary friends from seminary and college days, and brought many pilgrims to shrines and holy places.

After his retirement, Fr. Kuhn energetically continued his service filling in as needed for Mass and hearing confessions at many parishes. He resided in his former rectory in Farley, IA., where he had earlier served as Pastor.  In his final year and a half, he was pleased to serve the residents at Assisi Village and Stonehill Health Center until a few weeks before his death. An avid baseball fan, Fr. Kuhn once related that he wanted to finish his life like a baseball player sliding head first into home plate, just under a tag! He also related he wanted to die a “poor man.” We, his family, think he succeeded in both.

The Kuhn family has always been close, and Fr. Kuhn was a driving force in keeping it that way.  He was preceded in death by his parents Sylvester and Elizabeth Kuhn of Osage, IA.; by two sisters, Phyllis Drake of Honolulu, HI and Joan Guest of Washington, DC; by two brothers, Robert M. Kuhn of St. Charles, IL, and Lieutenant Commander James P. Kuhn USN (died while on active duty in the Navy); and by his niece Sr. Marcia Guest, of the Servants of Mary in Omaha, NE.

He is survived by three sisters, Katherine Peterman of Boise, ID, Betty Jean Lovejoy of Minneapolis, MN., and Sister Jeanine Kuhn of the Sisters of the Presentation in Dubuque, IA.  Fr Kuhn also leaves over a dozen first and second cousins, 21 nieces and nephews and 36 grandnieces and grandnephews spread from Maine to Hawaii and south to Mexico.

Funeral Services are coordinated by the Reiff Funeral Home of Peosta, IA and will be conducted 1-3 February in both Peosta and Osage IA. On Thursday February 1st visitation will be at St John the Baptist Catholic Church in Peosta, IA from 3-7pm preceded by a rosary at 2pm and followed by a Wake service at 7pm. On Friday February 2nd a Funeral Mass at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Peosta will commence at 2pm, preceded by a visitation in the church at 1 pm.  The Funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Most Reverend Thomas R. Zinkula, Archbishop of Dubuque.  On Saturday February 3rd a second Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church in Osage, IA at 11am preceded by a visitation in the church at 10am.  Interment will follow at the Sacred Heart cemetery in Osage, IA.

In lieu of flowers, donations in the name of Fr. Richard Kuhn to the Seaton Catholic School in Peosta, IA may be sent direct to the school or to St. John the Baptist Church in Peosta.

Kathy’s innate ability to nurture extended beyond her family to the animals she and Dennis raised, from sheep to pigs and cattle, always with a gentle touch and a heart full of compassion.  Her passion for giving knew no bounds, as Kathy poured her energy into the 4H program, serving as a leader and on the 4H Extension Council for a decade.

Kathy’s commitment to her community was evident in her 20 years of tending to the Monmouth Cemetery alongside her sister, Carmin Margeson. Their dedication to this labor of love was a testament to Kathy’s respect for her roots and the history of those who came before her. Her work with the National Agricultural Statistics Service for the USDA became more than just a job; it was an opportunity to connect with local farmers and forge lasting friendships.

Known for her culinary talents, Kathy’s popcorn balls and fudge were more than just treats; they were symbols of her generosity, often donated to auctions and benefits, spreading joy and sweetness wherever they went. Her love of dance began in Stanwood on Saturday nights and continued throughout her life as she and Dennis stepped onto the dance floor with country line dancing.

Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Dennis, of Monmouth, IA; sons, Dan (Jennifer) of Central City, IA; Matt (Katy) of Anamosa, IA.  She was a proud grandmother to Myranda, Jaclyn, Gabby, Addison, and Garrett, and a delighted great-grandmother to Jameson.  Sister, Carmin Margeson of Baldwin, IA; uncle, George (Pam) Butt of Durand, IL; brother-in-law, David (Gay) Appelhans of Ankeny, IA; sister-in-law, Pam Spain of Maquoketa, IA; nephews, Shad (Ann) Patterson (who was like a 3rd son to her) of Maquoketa, IA; and Bret Margeson of Bellevue.   She was preceded in death by her parents Forrest and Dixie Miller, father and mother-in-law, Jake and Shirley Appelhans, nephew Nick Margeson, infant brothers Terry and Forrest, 2 brothers-in-law and 1 sister-in-law.

A celebration of her life will held at 10 A.M., Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.  Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 P.M., Tuesday, January 30, 2024, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.  Burial will be at the Monmouth, Iowa Cemetery.

Marsha L. Conlon, age 70, of Dubuque, passed away at 4:40 a.m., on Friday, January 26, 2024, at home with her loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.  To honor Marsha’s life, family and friends may visit from 3:00 p.m. until 5:45 p.m., on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street.  Funeral services will be held at 6:00 p.m., on Tuesday at the funeral home with Rev. Marsha attended Dubuque Senior High School and was a member of the 1st graduating class at Hempstead High School in 1970.  She was united in marriage to Paul Conlon on November 29, 1974, at Sacred Heart Church in Dubuque.  They were blessed with a loving family and 47 years together before Paul passed away on July 30, 2022.  Marsha was employed at Klauer Manufacturing beginning on August 24, 1987, for 33 years until her retirement in 2020.  She was a long time member of Sacred Heart Church where she and Paul served as ushers.  Marsha was an active person who was very athletic and enjoyed spending time on the river with family and friends.  She was very creative and enjoyed cross stitching and several other craft projects.  She always planted beautiful plants and flowers and the family always joked that her main hobby was cleaning.  Marsha was an outstanding hostess who was a wizard in the kitchen creating delicious meals and delectable desserts.  She loved animals and all of her dogs were treated like little people with fur.  In her later years she and Paul liked to take trips to the casino to try their luck.  Spending time with her family was always at the top of her priority list and was the aspect of her life that brought her the greatest joy.  Marsha was always a small but mighty woman, from the way she fiercely loved her family to the way she battled her cancer like a true warrior.  She was very loved and will be missed tremendously.
