Ursula A. Onken

Ursula A. Onken, 84, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on Friday February 17, 2023 at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa with her loving husband by her side.

According to Ursula’s wishes, no public visitation or service will be held. Leonard Funeral & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, is assisting the family.

Ursula was born on January 30, 1939 in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, daughter of Martin and Christine (Eggerichs) Eucken. She was united in marriage to the love of her life, John Onken, on November 10, 1961 in Wilhelmshaven.

Ursula lost her father during World War II. Hoping to improve their circumstances, and already having a relative in Dubuque, Ursula’s mother decided the United States may provide a better life. Despite making every effort, her mother’s health could never quite agree with the climate changes in the Midwest so after two years a return to Germany was made. Ursula never forgot her time here, so in 1964, after lengthy discussions about the life in America, and still having a relative in Dubuque, Ursula and John decided to leave Germany behind and come to America.

During her life, Ursula did office work in Germany and after immigrating to the United States. Ursula was a stay-at-home mom with her two boys until 1980 when she returned to work at First National Bank. Ursula loved her job at the bank and to many of those who did their business there became known at “Ursula at the bank.” Her upbeat, positive attitude and personality made the customers – whom she truly enjoyed helping with their banking needs – feel right at home. Although the bank was to undergo several name changes, Ursula remained at the same branch until her retirement in 1999.

Ursula was the definition of what a wife and mother should be! It was a rare day that a home cooked meal was not provided, the house cleaned, or that whatever needs the family had was being met.

A person of many talents, Ursula was bilingual, was a second to none cook and baker, and could crochet like nobody’s business.  She was also very proud of her work with others at St. Matthew Lutheran Church prayer shawl, making items for those in need, and for those that simply needed a warm up.

Her caring heart and warming smile will truly be missed!

Those left to cherish Ursula’s memory is her husband of sixty-one years, John, sons Mike (Jennifer) and Rob (Becky), and grandchildren Mikayla, Ryan, Emily, Charlie, Joey, and Rosalie.

She was preceded in death by her parents Martin and Christine.

Memorials may be given in Ursula’s name to the Dubuque Regional Humane Society and St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Dubuque.

Carla D. Kipper

Carla D. Kipper, age 58, of East Dubuque, IL, passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2023 at Finley Hospital in Dubuque, surrounded by her family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 25, 2023 at St. Mary’s Church in East Dubuque, with Fr. Dennis Vargas officiating.  Burial will follow in the East Dubuque Cemetery.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Friday at the Miller Funeral Home in East Dubuque, where the parish rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m.  Friends may also visit from 9:30 – 10:15 a.m. on Saturday at the church.

Carla was born on April 25, 1964 in Dubuque, IA, the daughter of Kenneth C. “Bud” and Dolores C. (Vandermillen) Arnold. She was a graduate of Wahlert High School, the class of 1982, and a graduate of Clarke University, the class of 1995.

Carla was formerly employed at William C. Brown Publishing Co. and Kendall-Hunt Publishing Co., both in Dubuque. She was a member of St. Mary’s Parish.

Carla, the youngest of six siblings, was endearingly referred to as the “shelf baby” at birth. With such a large family, and therefore limited space in the home, Carla was settled into a bassinet atop a dresser in the dining room. Consequently, a profound family orientation was imbued upon her at an early age. She grew up at “Camp America” on HWY 20 East (East Dubuque), a full-service restaurant, gas station, truck stop, repair shop, and twelve-unit motel run by her parents Bud and Dolores. Her family raised cattle and kept horses on 120 acres. She and her siblings enjoyed horseback riding. A fallen tree was seen as a treat to come across, as Carla would jump over them on her horse, Rusty. She often spoke fondly of times in the winter when she would get to freeze an ice-skating rink in the front yard. She could also be found spending time around Frentress Lake with her cousins whom she developed a close bond with in her adolescence.

Eager to begin a career in young adulthood, she started work in publishing with William C. Brown and made many lifelong friendships along the way. She stuck in the publishing industry for life, most recently enjoying her role and colleagues at Kendall-Hunt. Her adventurous spirit did not languish with time, though. For instance, she and a friend spontaneously decided to drive as far away as possible over an extended weekend, making it as far as Canada, and returned home before work began the next week. Carla also pursued a college education in her late twenties through the accelerated adult nighttime program at Clarke University, attaining a bachelor’s degree in Communications with a minor in Philosophy, all while working full-time. She graduated with high honors and, not long after, gave birth to her first child, Ben. At this time Carla took up the stay-at-home mom role, never missing an opportunity for all things active and educational. Around this time Carla also explored other hobbies, such as photography, in which she frequently turned to her love for the outdoors for inspiration. She had a penchant for capturing flowers, butterflies, and dragonflies. The pinnacle of her photographing experiences was undoubtedly what she referred to as her, “once-in-a-lifetime trip,” to Hawaii, surrounded by the lush landscape and a never-ending ocean skyline. Until long after the birth of her second son, Logan, she also documented binders full of photos of her children, preferring to immortalize her love for them from behind the lens.

Carla cultivated a fervent faith. She kept active in her community and parish through volunteer opportunities such as serving meals at the Maria House, involvement in various school functions at St. Mary’s Elementary School and East Dubuque High School, participating in Christian Experience Weekends, and with her great reverence for life, marching with her parish in pro-life demonstrations, just to name a few. In conjunction with a sense of humor that never dwindled, her aptitude for listening and patience made her a dear friend and confidant to many. She could also be found devoting herself to spending time present with God in her parish’s adoration chapel, often volunteering for the overnight shift and staying well past her scheduled time. Even in recent years after her diagnosis with cancer, Carla kept the faith, making it known that she wanted to keep “fighting the good fight” and bearing her cross with grace and dignity. She was an advocate for all, tended to stick up for the underdog, and lived by the golden rule of “Treat others the way you’d want to be treated.” She could frequently be quoted saying “It will be what we make of it,” and “God always answers our prayers; sometimes it’s not a ‘No,’ but rather ‘I have something better in mind.’” Carla took great pride in helping to take care of her own mother, Dolores, toward the end of Dolores’ life. She was honored to be able to provide her comfort in those final days and help “walk her home.”

Not least of the things Carla took great pride in was her role as a grandmother and soon-to-be mother-in-law. It gave Carla great joy to be able to get on the floor and interact with her granddaughter, blowing bubbles, eating marshmallows, playing with dolls, reading stories, and playing with the family dog, Chance. It was evident that Carla was extremely thoughtful and intentional in the gifts and activities she planned, as was demonstrated in her affinity for crafting. In her later years, she would meticulously wrap Christmas presents in personalized packages and volunteer to do others’ Christmas wrapping for them. Her creativity was also manifested during annual cookie painting and pumpkin carving gatherings, considered by her to be revered family holidays.

Throughout the years she enjoyed gardening, family time at her mother’s house around the dinner table or a campfire on the patio, cheering on her boys at their various sporting events and activities, attending plays, watching a good movie or musical, such as her beloved “Phantom of the Opera,” and a good game of Scrabble. Among others, one of Carla’s favorite quotes was by Maya Angelou, reciting “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget the way you made them feel.” All those who knew Carla would attest to the fact that her embodiment of this saying, from the beginning of her life to the end of it, is perhaps the thesis of the legacy that she leaves behind.

Carla is survived by her two sons, Benjamin J. (fiancé, Katelyn McIntyre) Kipper and Logan M. Kipper, both of East Dubuque, IL; one granddaughter, Reagan Kipper; her siblings, Dan (Lesley) Arnold of Dubuque, IA, Valerie (Tom) Zalaznik of East Dubuque, and Vanessa Hoffmann of Dubuque; sister-in-law, Pam Arnold of Lancaster, WI; nieces, nephews; and her aunt, Dorothy (Donald) Bohnsack of Galena, IL.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bud and Dolores; a sister, Vivian Arnold, a brother, Kelly Arnold, uncles, Daniel and Dale (Mary Catherine) Vandermillen, aunt, Diane Buhr and uncle, Vic Buhr.

The Kipper and Arnold families express sincere appreciation to the nurses and staff at Hospice of Dubuque and Finley Hospital for the excellent care given to their mother and sister. It was truly appreciated.

Gary L. Giesemann

Gary Lee Giesemann, 73, of Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2023 at Azura Memory Care, Fox Point, Wisconsin from complications related to Alzheimer’s Disease.

Gary was born in Webster City, Iowa to Mary (nee Hueneke) and Virgil Giesemann on June 30, 1949. He and his family moved to Bellevue, Iowa two years later. He graduated from Bellevue High School in 1967 and earned a B.B.A from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa in December of 1972. He married his high school sweetheart, Faye Heim, on August 22, 1970. He and Faye moved to Milwaukee in 1972, where Gary began his career with Arthur Andersen & Company. He went on to earn partnership in the tax division of the firm in 1983. He later served as Tax Partner for Deloitte and retired from the firm in 2012. During his career, he had the ability to relate to the needs and visions of his colleagues and clients. Throughout his life, Gary demonstrated integrity, patience, persistence, and resiliency.

Gary had an incredible work ethic during his lifetime. In the early days of his life, he was never afraid of hard work, especially doing chores and anything that needed to be done on his family’s farm. He worked throughout his college years in Iowa City, as well as on farms and the railroad during summer months to earn money for his college tuition. Gary was a member of ROTC during his college years.  He served in the Army Reserves for 6 years and achieved the rank of Captain.

Gary was his family’s rock of dedication, patience, and genuine fun. Sons Jordan and Evan have been the absolute highlight of their parents’ lives. Gary and Faye loved parenting, as well as watching the boys grow to be wonderful adults. Gary loved spending time with his family and together the family enjoyed watching football, baseball, and basketball games (especially Gary’s beloved Hawkeyes), and tennis matches. Gary also enjoyed running with and showing their dogs Tessa and Keira at dog shows, gardening, going to rock concerts, and downhill skiing in the Rockies. Gary and Faye had a condominium in Naples, Florida for many years and the family has many happy memories from their time there, as well as their trips to Europe together.

Gary had a rare blood type, so he regularly donated blood to the Milwaukee Blood Center. It is no wonder he was drawn into the healthcare arena where he could find more ways to contribute to the well-being of others. He served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of St. Michael Hospital, as well as President of the Board for the Leukemia Society of Southeastern Wisconsin. Gary and Faye had a love of the arts, and appreciated Milwaukee’s performing arts community. This influenced Gary’s service on the Board of the Milwaukee Repertory Theater.

Gary was dearly loved by those he leaves behind. Those who remain to honor his memory include Faye, his wife of 52 years; his son Jordan of Milwaukee, WI; his son Evan (son-in-law Ryan Daniels) of Washington, D.C.; his sister Janell (Joe) Daugherty; his brother Timothy (Becky); and his brother Todd (Deb) all of Bellevue, Iowa. He is also survived by Faye’s siblings: Bonnie Long of Guthrie, Oklahoma; David (Anne) Heim of Marion, Iowa; and Darcie (Ken) Maurer of Manitou Springs, Colorado. Additionally, he is survived by nieces and nephews Kelly (Jim) Russell, Erin (John) Mueller, Abby (Brad) Slauson, Jeremy (Kathy) Scholbrock, Ben (Joslyn) Giesemann, Ashley (Matt) Schlecht, Toby Giesemann, Tate Giesemann, Nicole (Spencer) Warehime, Luke Giesemann, Joseph Long Jr., Linda (Jeff) Terpstra, Ashley Heim, Taylor (Melissa) Heim, and Elliot Heim, as well as aunts Verrena Dagitz-Stein and Adela Giesemann.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents Mary and Virgil Giesemann, Faye’s parents Cornella and Omer Heim, and brother-in-law Glenn Heim.

Gary will be remembered for his incredibly heartwarming smile and hearty laugh. He accepted the unbelievable challenge of Alzheimer’s Disease for almost 10 years with humor, grace, and dignity. For those who knew Gary in the last few years, he left behind memories of strength and resilience. He always had a smile and was grateful for any help that he was given.

The family wishes to thank Mark Chelmowski, MD, who gave him a lifetime of excellent healthcare. We appreciate the Azura Memory Care (Fox Point) Staff and Caregivers, as well as Allay Hospice Care Staff for their special care. The family is grateful for the love, support, and guidance of Dawn Adler and Dana Rubin-Winkelman during the many years that Gary attended the Recharge Program as well as Adult Day Care at Ovation Communities Adult Day Services. Faye would also like to thank the facilitator, Dana Rubin-Winkelman, as well as all of the members of the Caregiver Support Group, which is sponsored by Jewish Home and Care Center Foundation. They have provided loving and caring support to Faye during Gary’s lengthy illness. The family also sincerely appreciates family and friends who sent cards and visited Gary and supported him and his family with their love and many acts of kindness during the course of his illness.

A private family service and interment will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church in St. Donatus, Iowa. Gary’s cremated remains will be interred in a personalized wooden box, created with love by Gary’s brother-in-law, David Heim. The box is constructed of walnut wood, which is from Gary’s father-in-law’s collection of wood.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gary’s memory to Jewish Home and Care Center Foundation designated to the Adult Day Services Fund (https://ovation.org/foundation/make-a-donation) or the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund (https://ovation.org/foundation/make-a-donation).
