John R. Hohmann

John R. “Jack” Hohmann, age 91 of Dubuque, departed this world to be reunited with his beloved JaNiece, Saturday, March, 25, 2023, at home surrounded by his loving family. To celebrate Jack’s life well lived, friends may visit from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., on Sunday, April 2, 2023, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, where there will be a parish scripture wake service held at 3:30 p.m.  Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, April 3, 2023, at the Church of the Resurrection, 4300 Asbury Road, with Rev. Phillip G. Gibbs officiating.  Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Jack was born (“Jackie Rae,” as the midwife wrote on his birth certificate) to Ray and Dorothy (Henkel) Hohmann in Alva, Oklahoma, August 22, 1931. The son of an auctioneer and businessman, his family would move often, spending his school age years across states including Oklahoma, Arkansas and Illinois. After his family settled back in Dubuque, he completed his schooling at Loras Academy.

He would go on to hold jobs on the railroads and tow boats, but spent the majority of his career as a machinist with John Deere Works Dubuque, where he took great pride in his proficiency on multiple machines and attention to detail.

With the help of his younger sister, he finally crossed paths with the love of his life, JaNiece (Trizulny), after weeks of “noticing” her outside her job at the movie theater. They were united in holy matrimony August 20, 1955, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. They built a beautiful life together, with family, faith and service always at the forefront. The family was able to enjoy many camping trips to mountainous locations, especially Colorado, over the course of the weeks John Deere would shut down in the late summer months. It was there, Jack was able to share his love of the mountains and exploring with his children and many other family members, friends, and the youths he led as a Boy Scout leader. Later in life, after his retirement, he found the second love of his life – skiing. He would, again, find himself enjoying the mountains of Colorado where he would enjoy March ski trips with family and friends.

Retirement would not represent a time for slowing down to Jack. He served for many years as a ski patroller at Sundown Mountain; proudly working through winters well into his 80s. In their years as empty-nesters, Jack and JaNiece would travel all over the country in their RV, visiting family and friends. Their 70s featured fall trips to Albuquerque, NM, to visit his brother and sister-in-law and enjoy the great Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. There, Jack and his brother would volunteer on a chase team for Blue Flame, a hot air balloon team based out of the southeast. His summers included trips to Oshkosh,WI, enjoying air shows with friends and many area car shows with fellow “fast car” aficionados. Jack never strayed away from outdoor adventures.

Known as a “Mr. Fix-It,” to family and friends alike, he was always willing to help – repairing cars, installing satellites and troubleshooting household predicaments. It would be amiss not to mention his kindheartedness, which also helped “fix” many broken hearts in their time of need.

Though they were granted many happy years with him, Jack leaves behind many family members and friends, who will miss him immensely. His family includes: son, John M. (Renee), daughter Jan Troy, daughter Jill and son Jim, grandchildren Josh (Sarah) Hohmann, Jennifer (Drew) Brashaw, Jacob (Emily) Hohmann, Toni Jo Mitchell, Jessica (Ethan) Phyfe, Ben Troy, Kayla Hohmann, and Jeyden Hough, and six great-grandchildren Lucas, Carly, George, Adam, Nevada and Noah. His siblings, Gary, Donna, Karen, Mark, as well as several sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews are also left to mourn this loss.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, JaNiece, parents Ray and Dorothy, parents-in-law Glenn and Irma Trizulny, siblings Tom and Katherine, and son-in-law Michael Troy.

The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thanks to Hospice of Dubuque, for helping our family through this difficult journey. Special thanks also goes to Jack’s neighbors at Carter Road, for their friendship, care and compassion throughout the years.

The family will thankfully receive your support through greeting cards and memorials in John’s memory which may be mailed to Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, Dubuque, Iowa 52001, Attn. John Hohmann Family.

Wherever their travels took them, Ed commented that they met a relative of Char’s.  Their best days were spent at an old stone house, lovingly called the “Rock House,” near Bellevue.  Their seven children, and their children’s spouses, are Tim (Mary Lew McCormick), Shorewood, WI, Teri (John) Goodmann, Dubuque, IA, Cathy (Tony) Topf, Wonder Lake, IL, Laura Hawks, Iowa City, IA, Susan Hawks, Sugar Grove, IL,  Carolyn (Bill) Bates, Donahue, IA,  and Lisabeth Hawks, South Elgin, IL. Char is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Char was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Monica Vorwald and her husband Ed Hawks.

Char was a force of nature and transferred that energy toward many different pursuits through her life. She volunteered for the March of Dimes, Girl Scouts, and the St. Paul the Apostle School Board all in Davenport, IA. Char was a proud member of Rotary International Club and was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow. After earning her advanced degrees Char worked at Augustana College (Rock Island, IL) as an adjunct professor and the Director of the Reading and Writing (Lab) Center.  At Augustana College, Char became a beloved mentor of many students.  Never one to retire, Char and Ed opened Hawk Hollow Antiques and Collectibles in Bellevue, IA and Galena, IL. In all these endeavors Char developed close, life-long friendships that brought her much joy.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Dubuque; the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary; Our Lady of the Mississippi Abbey; or Luther Manor Communities. Char never met a person, plant, or book she didn’t love. In lieu of a memorial, feel free to donate a book to a library, volunteer time to a literacy organization, plant a tree, or plant some flowers. These meet Char’s greatest wish to make the world a better place. Family, faith, and education were most important to her.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at Luther Manor Communities and Hospice of Dubuque for their loving care and generous spirit.

The Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. For further information, please visit egelhofsiegertcasper.com.

Thomas I. Correll

Thomas I. “Tic” Correll, age 50, of Dubuque, IA, completed his earthly journey on March 20, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospital.  To honor Tom’s life, his Celebration of Life will be held from on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at The Other Side, 68 Sinsinawa Avenue in East Dubuque, IL.  A ride will be held from 12:00-5:00 p.m. with live music, food, and raffles to follow.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Tom’s family.

Tom was born on July 22, 1972, in Dubuque, IA, a son to Edward K. and Dolores M. (Bettcher) Correll.  He grew up with a quiet and humble spirit, but also knew that there was always a time and place in the days we walk through this life where a little agitation and fun can be had as well.  He met the love of his life, Amy Walters, while in high school and the two were united in marriage on August 29, 1998.  They were blessed with two daughters and an abundance of wonderful memories over their years together.  Tom spent some time at DMACC learning his upholstery trade which he thoroughly enjoyed utilizing with his business, Tic Tac Custom Upholstery.  He also worked full-time in the maintenance department at the University of Dubuque for many years.  Tom’s free-time was no exception when it came to enjoying life to its fullest.  Whether he was cooking up a delicious creation in the kitchen, practicing his perfect shot on the archery range, or simply spending a little time under the hood of the car, Tom made the most of each day and the opportunities it presented.  But, truth be known, all who truly knew and loved Tom understood that his family was the real driving force in his life.  His devotion was unwavering and his commitment as solid as you’ll ever find.  The void that Tom’s absence leaves now in the hearts and minds of all of his family and friends is beyond immeasurable.  His perpetual kindness, effortless patience, and willingness to always put others before himself is a legacy that only a few ever obtain.  Thank you, Tom, for living the kind of life that will allow us to treasure your memories for generations to come.  May the Lord now give you peace from your earthly battles, along with the peace and healing our broken hearts can only seek today.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Tom include,

She was born on March 31, 1929, the daughter of Elmer and Anna Helbing at their home in Dickeyville, WI. She married Jim Knaeble, had four children, and was a stay-at-home mom. Hazel was a hard worker all her life and over the years was employed at the Dubuque Packing Company, the 3 Mile House, Brian’s Supper Club, and the Silver Eagle. Also, she and her partner and dearest friend Leroy “Buzz” Risley owned and operated a bar and restaurant, The Lucky Four. Hazel and her friend Betty Dreessens ran a cleaning business, The Happy Housekeepers. After she retired, she would faithfully visit family and friends at area hospitals and assisted care facilities.  Hazel also volunteered at Manor Care, setting up the altar for Mass every Sunday plus helping with the social after the services. She was a great friend to everyone she met and was the world’s best grandmother. Her grandkids were her life, and they all knew this. They will fondly remember all the Saturday nights and holidays that were spent at her house.

Hazel is survived by her two daughters, Linda (Jack) Nachtman, and Debi (Don) Klauer, and two sons, Dave (Sandy) Knaeble, and Dan Knaeble, and a special friend, Leroy “Buzz” Risley, eleven grandchildren, thirty-two great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter, two nieces, Randa Derby, Mary Ann McGrane, and special friend, Carol Tressel who loved and cared for our mom.

Linda M. Gammon

Linda M. (Wieser) Gammon of Santa Fe, NM, passed away peacefully at home on March 20, 2023. A Celebration of Life will be held on April 1, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Santa Fe Memorial Gardens with a reception immediately following at Keller Williams.

Linda will be remembered by everyone for her friendliness, warmth, laughter, dry wit, her hard work in whatever endeavor she chose, and her commitment to making everyone in her circle comfortable, whether clients, close friends, cherished nieces and nephews, or total strangers.

With her red hair and open smile, she was recognizable in any setting. Linda was the calming spirit at every gathering, punctuating moments with her signature laugh and “Hey Kiddo, how’s it going?”

Linda was born November 21, 1953, in Dubuque, IA to Wilfred and Dorothy (McGovern) Wieser. She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1972. She worked at John Deere-Dubuque in Experimental Engineering until 1979, when she moved to Dallas, TX. She married Joe Gammon on October 25, 1986. They made their home in Dallas until moving to Santa Fe in 1992.

Linda and Joe created Red Dog Construction and built custom homes in the area, including rastra construction before it became commonplace. Linda served as a past President of the Santa Fe Area Home Builders Association and remained active in the organization until her death.

Linda became a Realtor in 2008, and was part of the Keller Williams Santa Fe family. She was an early investor in KW and served on the KW Associate Leadership Council for 8 years. She was an active member of SFAR, serving on multiple committees including Community Services, Government Affairs, and the MLS Committee.

She was chair of the KW Culture Committee for 4 years, selflessly giving her time to work with local charities like the Cancer Foundation for New Mexico, Adelante, and Bienvenidos. Linda sold hundreds of homes and became a lifelong friend to her clients, simply because she cared for the people she served and believed in building relationships at every opportunity.

Linda enjoyed playing golf and on a sunny day could be found on the course at Marty Sanchez. She was the Realtor with an open-door policy so that she was available to help new brokers or to share friendly conversation with colleagues.

She and Joe had no children, but in her own words, were “THAT aunt and uncle” for their nieces and nephews. You’d often meet a niece or nephew each summer when Joe and Linda opened their home and hearts to the kids in their extended family.

Survivors include her husband Joe, her siblings Sue (Lonnie) Cox, Deb (Rick) Henry, Jan (Dennis) Dodson, Jeff (Joan) Wieser, Sally Wieser, Jay (Carla) Wieser, and Scott Wieser, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents, parents-in-law, Jeff and Toni Gammon, her brother Jerry, and her nephew Jed. She was also preceded in death by her real estate partner and great friend, Judy Camp.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Scott Herbert and Nexus Health Santa Fe for their care and compassion.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Adalante, Cancer Foundation for New Mexico, SF Punch out Parkinsons, or your favorite local charity.
