Allen R. Schnoor

Allen R. Schnoor, 67, of Maquoketa Iowa, passed away Friday, January 20, 2023.

Allen was born September 16, 1955 to Allen Schnoor and Edna (Heeren) Schnoor. He was a 1973 graduate of Maquoketa High School. He married his high school sweetheart, Helen Caes, on January 4, 1974 in Elkader, Iowa and enjoyed 49 years of marriage together. They raised four children; Tred, Craig, Brandy, and Jed.

Allen and Helen were lifelong farmers who raised cattle and crops north of Maquoketa and took pride in stewarding their land and keeping good fences.  Although Allen would say the best crop he ever raised were his four children.

Allen volunteered in many organizations throughout his life.  In particular, he was a 4-H leader for the Emeline Ridge Rollers, a member of the Jackson County Cattlemen, a Farmers Creek Township Trustee, and delivered for Meals-on-Wheels.  He was also a proud lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and was an ardent supporter of our second amendment rights.

Allen’s favorite pastimes included spending time with family and friends. He loved watching his grandchildren participate in sports, music, drama and community activities.  Grandpa would always try to be there for his grandkids.  Allen also enjoyed the outdoors, especially deer hunting, fishing, canoeing, mushrooming and making wonderful memories at the family campground.  Allen also really enjoyed playing cards with all his card buddies.  During retirement Allen and Helen enjoyed traveling extensively – especially their lifelong dream vacation to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.

Those left to honor Allen’s memory include wife Helen, son Tred (Rebekah) Schnoor of Monticello, son Craig (Katie) Schnoor of Maquoketa, daughter Brandy (Jamison) Schurbon of Ely, and son Jed (Allison) Schnoor of Martelle; ten grandchildren: Lake, Mace, Roth & Rynn Schnoor, Quinn & Avery Schnoor, Brooke & Paige Schurbon, and Emily & Abbie Schnoor; brothers Roger (Pat) Schnoor of Monmouth & Lynn Schnoor of Maquoketa; sister Linda Grobstick of Maquoketa; aunt Fern Schoenthaler of Maquoketa; sisters and brothers-in-law Delores Current of Monmouth, Gloria (John) Caven of Maquoketa and Ken Weimerskirch of Maquoketa; and numerous nieces, nephews & cousins.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Allen and Edna Schnoor.

Allen never knew a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone.  We hope to live up to this part of his character and ask that all family & friends attend the visitation and/or a celebration of his life.  The celebration of Allen’s life will be held at 11 A.M., Thursday, January 26, 2023, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa followed by a luncheon at the Eagles Club in Maquoketa.  Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 P.M., Wednesday, January 25, 2023, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Cremation will follow the visitation.

Roger E. Quade

On January 16, 2023, with heavy heart we said goodbye to our beloved husband, father, father-in-law, grandpa, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and good friend, Roger Edward Quade, as he rested peacefully at home with his family gathered by his side.  The family will welcome and appreciate visitors on Saturday, January 28th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, Dubuque. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Immanuel Congregational UCC, 1795 Jackson Street, Dubuque with Rev. Dianne Grace officiating.  Committal prayers and military honors by American Legion Post #6 and the Iowa Army National Guard will immediately follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Roger was born in Dubuque, Iowa on July 17, 1937, oldest son of Edward J. Quade and Frieda Biebermann Quade.  Despite moving into a new home he built on North Cascade Road in 1967, in his heart he lived his entire 85 years on the land that was most precious to him, the Quade Century farm just south of Dubuque on Oakland Farms Road.  He spent hours in his machine sheds tinkering and working on cars, trucks, and machinery of all kinds, particularly his John Deere tractors.

Roger attended first grade in the “little red” one-room schoolhouse that still sits on the Quade property.  After only one year, he was transferred to a 2-room school in Rockdale and finished 9th grade at the one-room school south of Dubuque on Hwy 151, called Military No. 3, where his mother was the teacher.  He went on to graduate from Dubuque Senior High School in 1954, after which he worked with Carpenter and Builder Bob Shireman.  He also worked several years as a part time Meat Inspector at Dubuque Packing Company.  He then, through an apprenticeship at John Deere Dubuque Works, became a Tool and Die Maker and ultimately retired as Supervisor in the Tool Room in 1992, after 32 years of service.

Roger served six months active duty in the U.S. Army, stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood.  He finished his seven years of service as a cook in the U.S. Army Reserves, 389th Engineering Battalion.

On December 30, 1961, Roger married Patricia R. Buol at Immanuel Congregational Church in Dubuque.  They were blessed with two daughters and four grandchildren, all of Dubuque.  They were the pride and joy of his life.  On December 30, 2022, he and Pat were able to celebrate their 61st wedding anniversary.

Roger was a member of the Key West Sportsman’s Club, Lacoma Golf Club, and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME).  He was also a member of Immanuel Congregational UCC where he volunteered his time.

Although a great hunter, Roger was a “softy” for the family’s pets, and if something was broken, he could fix it; if it didn’t exist, he created it.  He liked joyfully antagonizing his friends, but he was the most dependable friend anyone could have!  He was an avid photographer and four-wheeler in his beloved Golden Eagle Jeep.  He enjoyed playing golf, volleyball, racquetball, and Euchre with his card club of 50 years.  He loved restoration projects, attending auctions and sales, and taking care of his Century Farm.  In his younger days, he could be found roller skating, bowling, and riding his horse. His favorite pastime was spent enjoying good food with his family and hosting barbeques poolside.

Roger and his family enjoyed traveling, especially caravanning with close friends taking their Jeeps out west to go 4-wheeling on trails and high ridges and camping in the mountains.  Those with a CB knew Roger as “The Ridge Runner”!  The family took many trips across the United States and Mexico, and visited Florida, Texas, and Colorado regularly.  He also loved hunting elk and deer in Wyoming and Colorado with his buddies, Bill H., Tom P., Bill R., Chuck P., and Rambo.  On a spur-of-the moment decision, he fulfilled a long-time wish to go abroad and get a look at foreign countries.  In 2019 he and Pat joined his sister and her husband and a niece and her husband taking an exciting whirlwind tour of England, France, Switzerland, and Italy visiting art museums, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, St. Peter’s Square in Rome and much more.  At the end of the trip, he said he loved Switzerland the best because it reminded him of his favorite place – home.

Those who survive Roger are his wife Patricia; daughter Tusdee Blus (John), and their children Jesse and Olivia; daughter Tricia Wagner (Scott) and their twins Adam and Sophia; his sister Lois K. (Douglas C.) Pearce of Dubuque; his brother Ty (Bonnie) Quade of Sioux City; his sisters-in law Betty Quade (Kene–deceased), Epworth; Kathy (Tom) Porter, Texas; JoAnn (Tom) Mohr, Dubuque; his brothers-in-law Ray (Betty) Buol, Georgia; Roy (Deb) Buol, Dubuque; Rob (Ann) Buol, Texas; and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; younger brother Kene Quade; mother-in-law Virginia Buol; sister-in-law Carol and her husband Bill Boyes.

His family would like to express a special thank you to his neighbor and good friend Leo Junk, fondly nicknamed by Roger as his “hired hand”, who was there for him over the years, worked by his side, showed him much kindness, and cared about him like family.  We don’t know how he’s handling heaven without you, Leo!  And a big thank you to all the family, friends and neighbors who offered their concern and support.  They would also like to thank Roger’s niece, Jenni for all her medical expertise and support; all his doctors who took such great care of him over the years, especially Dr. Kirkendall and his Nurse, Kate for all their care and concern; and his caregivers Melissa, Barb, Buffy, Sara, Jenni, and Ryan as well as Rev. Dianne Grace.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Roger Quade’s name.  Memorials may be sent in care of Leonard’s Funeral Home.

Michael J. Budde

Michael J. Budde, 77 Years, of Asbury, IA, died January 19, 2023 at his home, surrounded by his wife Linda and daughters, Sarah and Rachel. His last smile in life was hearing his grandchildren say their goodbyes before he passed peacefully away.

Visitation will be from 3:00 pm until 6:45 pm Monday, January 23, 2023 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory. A prayer service will be held at 6:45 PM.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Mike will be 10:30 am Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at Church of the Resurrection with Father Phil Gibbs as the Celebrant.  Full military honors will be rendered immediately after mass by the American Legion Post #6.  Inurnment will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery at a later date.

Michael was born September 18, 1945, in Dubuque, IA, the son of Norbert William and Dorothy May Budde. He has said on that day, he won the parental lottery.  His parents provided him a foundation in family love, loyalty and hard work. On November 16, 1968, he married Linda Miller in St. Mary’s Church, Dubuque, IA, where the rest of us would say, he won the wife lottery.  His daughters, Sarah and Rachel, would continue this winning trend with the child, and later, grandchild lottery.

He served his country in the United States Army beginning in 1965 and served a tour of duty in Vietnam.  He was honorably discharged as a Specialist 5 in 1968.

After discharge from the army, Mike returned to school, receiving a B.A. in Sociology and Teaching from Loras College, an M.A. in Sociology from Marquette University, and an M. Ed. in Sociology from South Dakota State University, where he was also a Doctoral Candidate. He embraced education and fell in love with teaching. He had often said he enjoyed teaching so much he would have done it for free. Mike continued to challenge himself, however, and took a shine to entrepreneurship after he was asked to consider starting a business while Dubuque was experiencing record high unemployment rates.  He accepted this new challenge and in 1988 formed Advanced Data-Comm, which he owned and operated as CEO for 20 years.  After selling the business, he returned to his first love in education at Loras College and held an administrative advisory role for another several years before retiring in 2011.  Mike came out of retirement temporarily to serve as Interim CEO at National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium in 2017.

Mike was very active in his community including civic involvement as Asbury City Council Member and Asbury Mayor.  He served on many boards including Mercy Medical Center, National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium, Dubuque Girls’ Club, Iowa Workforce Development Region One, Holy Family Catholic School System, Matter Creative Center and University of Dubuque.

He was loved by many for his wisdom, quick wit and sarcasm. Mike loved his wife Linda, his daughters and grandchildren fiercely and always expressed his pride in his family. Linda was indeed what he called his better half, and provided him the strength and support to allow him to achieve his goals. He loved to joke that he should actually introduce himself as Mr. Linda Budde, he was always so proud of her. He enjoyed woodworking and eating out with his friends.  He was an avid fan and frequent attendee of Loras College Women’s and Men’s basketball and Dubuque Fighting Saints’ hockey games.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Budde of Asbury; two daughters, Sarah (Craig) Siegert of Marion, IA and Rachel Stierman of Urbandale, IA; five grandchildren, Brennan, Karis, Jaxson, Griffin, and Charlotte; brother, Norbert W. (Jo Ann) Budde of Evanston, IL; sister, Marilyn (Dennis) Lawler of Springfield, IL; brother-in-law, Randy Miller; sisters-in-law, Deborah (Eric) Reinhardt of Peyton, CO and Kristine (Joe) Miller of Swisher, IA; niece and nephews, Becky (Steve) Gartner of Maple Grove, MN, Christopher Lawler of Springfield, IL, Shawn (Eileen) Budde of Evanston, IL, Erik (Julie) Budde of San Carlos, CA, Jeremy Miller of Green Bay, WI, and Shawn (Christine) Miller of Zwingle, IA.
