Anna M. Schmidt

Anna M. Schmidt, age 94, of Dubuque, passed away at 11:11 a.m., on Saturday, September 2, 2023, at Stonehill Health Center. To honor Anna’s life, family and friends may visit from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., on Friday, September 8, 2023, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, where there will be a parish scripture wake service held at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at Holy Spirit Parish, Sacred Heart Church, 2215 Windsor Avenue. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Anna was born on November 4, 1928, daughter of Clarence and Elizabeth (Pothoff) Bleile. She was born at home in Balltown, Iowa. Back then, the doctor came to the home to deliver babies. Instead of a bassinet, her mother would put her in a dresser drawer to sleep when she was an infant.
She aquired polio at the age of 4. The vaccine had not been invented until the 1950s. She spent 6 months of her life crawling and had to learn how to walk again. The polio led to a lifetime of back challenges for her.
Anna’s first language was German. Her children fondly remember that when Mom yelled at them in German, she meant business.

Anna had to learn English when she went to kindergarten at St. Joseph School in Balltown. She actually did walk 4 miles to school (uphill) every day. She and her siblings would sometimes sneak throught the fields to take a short cut when they could get away with it. She completed the 6th grade and then stopped school to help on the family farm. Anna was united in marriage to Leonard Schmidt on October 22, 1947, at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Balltown, Iowa. Leonard passed away on August 18, 2015. During her life she lived in Balltown, North Buena Vista and Bellevue, eventually moving to Dubuque in 1984. She was a talented gardner and the food she prepared for her family came from the garden or from the animals that were raised on the farm. Anna was a devoted mother who was always ready and willing to help her family and friends. She loved to prepare meals for her family. She served 3 meals a day, everyday. No one would ever leave her home hungry. We will cherish the fond memories of her soups, famous goulash and smells of her freshly baked bread which she continued to do weekly until her health would no longer allow. She loved the times with her family, especially the babies. She always made sure every baby would be wearing an undershirt so they wouldn’t get cold. Anna loved her family and watching her grandchildren brought her great joy. Her faith was an important part of her daily life, even when she could no longer attend Mass at Holy Ghost Church due to health issues. She enjoyed going to Bingo at Holy Ghost, playing Euchre and especially Yatzee. She enjoyed watching WWE wrestling every Monday on TV. She would argue with anyone who told her it wasn’t real. Anna has faced some challenging health issues these past years, but has handled them with extraordinary grace. She will be greatly missed.

Those left to cherish Anna’s memory include

6 children,
Robert (Donna) Schmidt, Durango, IA,
Vern Schmidt, Dubuque, IA,
Bonnie (Jeff) Avenarius, Dubuque, IA,
Daryl (Fran) Schmidt, Oelwein, IA,

and Rose (Steve Zmuda) Wallace, Bettendorf, IA;

17 grandchildren,

39 great-grandchildren and 23 great great-grandchildren;

Erin Fiegen, born in 1983, passed away on August 28th from complications related to Alcohol Use Disorder.

Erin was a loving mother and the youngest of 6 children. She is survived by her son Eli, all her siblings, her nieces/nephews, and her parents, Linda & Charles Fiegen.

She went on to work for her family’s business, Capri College, where she was the Admissions Director and helped hundreds of students follow their dreams. She poured her heart and soul into her students, spending nights and weekends on the phone helping them through anything. She cared about each of them personally and wanted to make them feel like part of our family. She had the biggest heart and will be missed by so many people.

Before Erin became a mother, her favorite role in life was being Auntie Erin. She would plan special sleepovers with the girls, babysit anytime anyone needed her, and make the boys give her a hug before leaving any family gathering. She made each of them feel special and loved. All her nieces and nephews were her babies. She loved them all fiercely and would do anything in the world for them. She was the best auntie to all of them – Alex (Lexi), Colten, Dominic, Ryan, Hannah, Lucas, Samantha, Charlie, Zoe, Harlen, Alivia (Adrien), Isaiah and Esmay.

Her dream of becoming a mother was fulfilled when she had Eli in 2015. He was her whole world & she absolutely loved being his mom. They enjoyed going on adventures together like visiting all the different parks in town, going for hikes, and playing at the beach. She did a wonderful job as his mom; Eli is so kind, loving, and smart.

Erin was an amazing friend, sister, and daughter. She was so much fun to be around, and her laugh was infectious. She loved going to see live music and was a great singer. She enjoyed doing karaoke at home and especially loved Nina Simone. She was the type of person that always had a compliment to give, tried to build up everyone around her, and just made you feel good. We are going to miss her sweet, loving spirit so much!

Timothy M. Steve

Timothy M. “Tim” Steve, age 67, of Durango, IA, completed his earthly journey on August 27, 2023, at home while surrounded by his loving family after a long illness.  To honor Tim’s life, family and friends are invited to join in fellowship at his Celebration of Life from 2:00-4:00 p.m., on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, in the Packard Pavilion Amphitheater at the Dubuque Arboretum, 3800 Arboretum Drive, in Dubuque.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Tim’s family.

Tim was born on January 3, 1956, in Dubuque, IA, a son to Alan J. Steve and Jean E. (Kennedy) Langtimm.  Tim grew up with a love for the outdoors and all things nature.  This adoration for the outdoors would continue throughout his entire life and Tim enjoyed so many of the simple things in life that every day along his 67 years among us was considered to be a blessing.  He met his soul-mate, Wanda J. Lewis, in their younger years and the couple has been inseparable ever since.  Tim was a plumber by trade and spent the majority of his working career with Steve’s Plumbing, along with Mark’s Plumbing before eventually moving into retirement.  But, Tim’s true passions were consistently met at home.  Morning walks with his beautiful bride was his side was his favorite way to start each day.  Add in the opportunity to grab his fishing pole, tend to the gardens, feed the chickens, or even a relaxing morning of morel hunting when the season approached and Tim was in seventh heaven.  He was also quite proficient in the woodworking department and created many of the furnishings in their home through his own time and talents.  Nobody could deny that Tim marched proudly to the beat of his own drum, but his deep love for all that was good in the world always shined through as well.  We will miss Tim more than words could accurately depict, but to see him finally at rest from these earthly battles brings the peace that he needed most.  Thank you, Tim, for leaving a definite impression on the world around you and may you enjoy the comfort now that all who loved you have sought for you over these last months.  We will miss and love you forever and wait patiently now to see your quicky smile once again.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Tim include,
